eekfuh··on Pledge support to Wikipedia if they do a SOPA blackout
How do I know if I donate through this site that Wikipedia will actually get the money.

Also the domain registration is private and through GoDaddy too. (less credibility to me)

(I'd gladly donate to wikipedia, but not through this site)

EDIT: I thought they were taking the donations, my bad. It's a demand progress site. Odd that they'd still use GoDaddy (even if GoDaddy eventually denounced SOPA).

eekfuh··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (January 2012)
Platfora is hiring JavaScript engineers to Distributed system engineers. They are in San Mateo, California and closed their series A with Andreessen Horowitz leading.

They offer solid benefits with competitive pay and have some of the smartest people I've met on their team.

Also they need serious JS engineers, people that know the ins and out of the language and can build entire applications out of JS.

eekfuh··on Zynga falters in debut, sheds doubt on IPO market
There is some real negative sentiment here, that I understand, but don't at the same time. Yes, their growth is flattening, they've done some less than honorable things in the past, but if you look at the big picture, they have some great talent (which may or may not be leaving), they really haven't had any prolific product failures or missteps, and they've made a solid name for themselves in the gaming business. (I doubt many of their users or potential users know about the stock option BS or their past with scammy offers)

I'm not saying Zynga is a clear winner, but what I am saying is, they are not a clear loser.

eekfuh··on Prof. of Constitutional Law at Harvard says that SOPA violates First Amendment
I think you meant constitution.
eekfuh··on Show HN: An OS X music library I've been working on for the past year.
I think your "extensive file support" + the nice UI is going to be the winning combo.
eekfuh··on Dropbox Said No To “Nine-Digit” Acquisition Offer From Steve Jobs
What is interesting to me is when this got posted several weeks ago, an admin/mod deleted it off HN.
eekfuh··on Commit logs from last night
API? I want to add my own stuff ;)
eekfuh··on Securing PHP
First off, under disabled functions, 'eval' needs to be number one.

Secondly, I was kind of disappointed that this wasn't an overview on common mistakes users do when learning PHP. This feels basically feels like teaching someone how to enable safe mode, because you aren't teaching someone why they should escape sql or why they should encode user submitted content, which to me is much more important. (Though teaching someone to install Suhosin and disabling debug output is still important in my opinion, so props for that)

eekfuh··on Kiva is matching loans for first time donors
Brilliant idea. (i just did my first loan with the matching loan.)

eekfuh··on Show HN: (first iPhone App) Picsicle - Customized Photo Postcards
Very neat. Is this using sincerely or something else?
eekfuh··on Show HN: Thread.ly - a news reading and sharing app (feedback appreciated)
Odd that it doesn't work in FF 9.0. There aren't any ads. Shouldn't be any JS errors either.

The technology behind the scenes is pretty simple. PHP + MySQL + Redis. Front-end is MooTools and I use Sass to generate my CSS. I have some cron's running to migrate newly added content to AWS/CloudFront. Certain data is cached via Redis and soon, almost all of it will be in the cache.

eekfuh··on Show HN: Thread.ly - a news reading and sharing app (feedback appreciated)
Most of the content from the site is from RSS feeds. This is why there are lot of descriptions that are short. Hopefully users will add stuff and I can wean the site off this automatically submitted content.

After you register, you create a board or two, follow some users or sources in those boards. Make a tech board, with the sites you like. Make a friends one following all of your friends. But, you are absolutely right. I am not showing the user that they need to do this. This is probably the hardest thing to do, for me, right now.

eekfuh··on Show HN: SendWrite.com - your email just got physical
Reminds me of this really old website http://postagram.com/ that does the same for $1.00 -- note the site is ugly and mails really ugly letters in an untimely fashion, however it is somewhat usable.
eekfuh··on 37signals sent me a gift for pwning their leaderboard
This reminds me of when I pointed out an exploit on Zappos' website to them. They gave me a $100 GC to use on their site.

Companies like 37Signals and Zappos are full of great people and know how to show their appreciation.

Their folder sharing?

When I heard that Dropbox had raised a very large round, my first thought was that Apple or MSFT was trying to buy them up, since both are trying to kick-start their cloud storage offerings.

IMHO, its too bad, since I would of really loved to have seen Dropbox more tightly integrated into iOS. (iCloud will be and it might be my replacement for Dropbox). Though for sharing, I don't think iCloud will have those features for a while.

eekfuh··on Why I'm (Finally) Switching to CoffeeScript
> var game_piece, _i, _j, _k, _l, _len, _len2, _len3, _len4, _len5, _len6, _m, _n;

I dont see why he didn't use do "var game_piece , _i , len;" He doesn't need multiple i's nor lengths. The JS example is just a very poor example of coding. (in fact he could of just simplified it further down by having one loop and a variable to the method, to be executed on those pieces.)

CoffeeScript is very nice, but I want to see examples of why to use it that will actually save me time. Compared to the examples, there are better ways to code and tons of easy ways to do OO with certain frameworks/toolkits.

eekfuh··on The Cheap Android Phone Is Here, But It's Not What You'd Expect.
> It's faster than any other smartphone

Higher clockspeed != faster. One thing I've noticed about a few products from China and even on Android device variants, that this number does not definitively make it faster. Niether does the addition of a "fast" GPU and loads of ram.

Maybe its because China tends to write poor drivers and on Android, manufacturers and carriers love to add their own custom UI or applications that take a toll on the speed and experience.

eekfuh··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (September 2011)
Salt Lake City, Utah - Solera Networks

We are a vc-funded network security company. We have a great engineering team, in an almost all engineering company (80% are engineers). We have the need for some great people, with a wide range of talent. We have needs in kernel development, systems code (C/C++), coders to handle large volumes of data (100's of tB) all the way to web interface development.

Full benefits. Lots of vacation. Great people to spend your day with. http://www.soleranetworks.com/company/careers (Also we love Zombies)

eekfuh··on Jig, the first product from Tasty Labs
I love seeing Joshua Schachter went from a ridiculous domain (Del.icio.us) to the new trend of simple, fantastic and probably expensive domains.
eekfuh··on Steve Jobs Resigns as Apple CEO (Official Letter)
The way he worded his reasoning, makes it sounds like a health issue. I honestly hope that this is not the case.
eekfuh··on html5media.js enables HTML5 video and audio tags in all major browsers
Looks cool, but def needs some CSS additions to the play button, "cursor: pointer;" plus the other controls need the cursor property to be set to the proper thing.

eekfuh··on Twitter Is Said to Buy Employee Stock With Half of $800 Million in Funding
I think it does align some of the founders and early employees with the investors.

The founders get to pocket a few million dollars, stop worrying about their paychecks and from there, they can shoot for the stars, which is something the investors want.

Anyone else not surprised?
eekfuh··on What's It Like To Be Fired?
I once got fired for giving my boss the advice to "shred" their drive (it was their last day). Someone overheard this incorrectly and thought that I said "on my last day, that I'd shred all the companies drives".

It was my word against his and company's revenues were down significantly. They put me on non-paid leave and a week later when they "investigated" the matter, they fired me, but by then I had new a job with a much better company.

It was a blessing. I learned more at this new place and earned more too. It was later acquired by Adobe (mental stagnation).

Getting fired NEVER lead to me being outcasted from the local tech community. It instead improved my life.
