donarb··on Ask HN: Is Apple down?
Both Apple Maps and Google Maps work in the browser, no need for an app.
donarb··on Apple turns monitor height adjustment into a $400 upsell
This is nothing new, even Wal-Mart does it, it's retail selling 101.
donarb··on J. Kenji López-Alt says you’re cooking just fine
Kenji is no longer an owner at Wursthall.

donarb··on U.S. corn-based ethanol worse for the climate than gasoline
> you still need to actually produce something to get that government money

This farmer faked his paperwork and got $1.6 million in illegal farm subsidies.

donarb··on U.S. corn-based ethanol worse for the climate than gasoline
The federal government is not responsible for presidential primary elections. It is the parties that are.
donarb··on Union Pacific to buy 20 battery-electric locomotives for yard service
Progress Rail along with Wabtec (originally Westinghouse).
donarb··on Union Pacific to buy 20 battery-electric locomotives for yard service
Yard service is a perfect application for these types of locomotives. Diesel fired locomotives tend to sit around idling and burning fuel many more hours than they are being used every day. Diesel locos also tend to not be very fuel efficient when constantly stopping/starting around the yard.
donarb··on Amazon Pip Horror Story
Oh, I thought this was a story about a Python installation that had gone rogue.
donarb··on Washington state shuts down Amazon price-fixing program nationwide
Why would sellers drop out of the program? Where would they go? Amazon raised the prices to match what the seller was getting outside of Amazon.
donarb··on Washington state shuts down Amazon price-fixing program nationwide
Amazon is actually fixing the price that you are selling on Amazon matched to what other sites are selling. There's no point in leaving if you're selling your widget on other platforms for the same price.
donarb··on Your app is not compliant with Google Play Policies: A story from hell
It just amazes me that developers try to cram editorializing into the title of the app, when you're already given a search word field and a description field in which to tell the world about your app. IRL nobody searches for "Cheerios - Toasted Whole Grain Oat Cereal for the Whole Family".
donarb··on Who wrote this shit?
Or this:

Code as if the next guy is a violent psychopath who knows your address.

donarb··on It is difficult for the average person to conceive of how useless NFTs are
Here's an example of an NFT use in the real world. The NFL (football league) has started fazing out selling real paper tickets to fans. You buy a ticket digitally and the barcode is scanned on your phone. Back in the days, fans liked to have a paper ticket they could have to remember the event, maybe their birthday or some record breaking play happened. The NFL is now selling commemorative paper tickets for a specific game to fans that is essentially an NFT. The fan had to have purchased the actual ticket and attended in order to buy the commemorative ticket.
donarb··on Merchant Service Horror: Amazon Pay and the Disappearing $2300
Just for good measure even if you're not in Washington state, file a claim there and possibly with the Washington State Attorney General's office. Bob Ferguson has no qualms about taking Washington companies to court to do the right thing.
donarb··on Understanding UUIDs, ULIDs and string representations
During the Boeing 737 Max software fix, the FAA required Boeing engineers to make the system handle 5 simultaneous cosmic bit flips.

donarb··on Update: iPhone Camera app did not replace person's head with a leaf
There was no AI upscaling. If you enlarge an image between two white pixels, the inserted pixel is white, you will not get an interpolated black pixel.
donarb··on Update: iPhone Camera app did not replace person's head with a leaf
> is the "Karen" reference really necessary? It's a sexist, racist insult

And also misused quite frequently. Its origin was a white woman who called the police on a group of black people who were doing nothing wrong other than being black in the wrong place.

donarb··on Tesla recalls nearly half a million Model 3 and Model S cars
Instead of Consumer Reports, how about JD Power? Every car company that brags about ratings quotes their JD Power rating first and foremost. Tesla is 30 out of 33 on JD Power.
donarb··on Mary Somerville, for whom the word “scientist” was coined
According to the Britannica encyclopedia, it is thought to have been named in honor of Captain Richard Somers, hero of the Tripolitan-American (Barbary) War.

donarb··on Best practices for writing code comments
Or use code folding.
donarb··on Best practices for writing code comments
Usually any programming text editor will have themes for syntax highlighting. You can pick a theme that does what you want or modify one that suits you.
donarb··on DoorDash will require all employees to deliver goods
They could always ride along with a driver. Gets them almost the same experience seeing what issues a driver has to face.
donarb··on Grindr €6.5M fined for not collecting users’ valid consent for sharing data
> Maybe it's time that frameworks like Django and Rails make it easier to be GDPR compliant from day 1

The first step in being GDPR compliant is not installing a tracking library in your project. Web frameworks have no control over that.

donarb··on UberEats took unauthorized amount (and not willing to pay it back)
The same happened to me. I didn't notice that the discount wasn't on the bill until 2 days later. I contacted UberEats and they said it was over 48 hours so they wouldn't do anything about. It was about 52 hours after.
donarb··on DocuSign Shares Plunge 42%
Doubt that would happen. DocuSign provides signing capabilities to other CRM packages and software like Microsoft, Google, Oracle, SAP, Workday, none of which would take kindly to Salesforce taking over DocuSign.
donarb··on California port truckers ‘drowning’ in supply chain inefficiencies
Everybody wants more freeways, no one raises their hand when asked if they would give up their house for the right of way.
donarb··on California port truckers ‘drowning’ in supply chain inefficiencies
LA/Long Beach ports already have a dedicated rail corridor specifically for quickly sending rail traffic out of the LA basin and on to the midwest. Part of the problem is that rail yards in Chicago are clogged with trains that can't be unloaded.

donarb··on TSMC “Apple-first” 3nm policy leads to AMD and Qualcomm mutiny
Here's what developers get for their 30%, and yes for very little effort on the developer's part:

  - 24/7 worldwide availability, instant payment/app download
  - Easy re-install after deletion, you still own the app even if deleted
    from the device
  - Region restriction
  - Separate app pricing by region
  - Revenues paid to developer from multiple region currencies without
    conversion fees
  - Tax calculation and collection
  - Instant customer refunds
  - User rankings and reviews
  - App store advertising in category listings
  - Video previews of the app in operation
  - Packaging of media content allowing developers the ability to load game
levels as needed. This allows a user to start playing your game quickly.
  - App sales stats
donarb··on Wolves make roadways safer
There is now an effort to provide passage for animals across highways using overpasses/underpasses. Though not feasible everywhere, they are usually placed near known migration routes.
