dhughes··on Russia: Hidden chips 'launch spam attacks from irons'
> First thing that comes to mind is that no one would suspect an iron. ...

That's very Monty Python.

dhughes··on The E-Cigarette Industry, Waiting to Exhale
You would think common sense would say "only put air in your lungs".
dhughes··on Lou Reed, Velvet Underground Leader and Rock Pioneer, Dead at 71
That's sad he wasn't really all that old, 71 is like the new 61. He had a great adventurous life more than most people but still way too young.

Love your liver!

I'm not sure what Lou's situation was but this is a good time to stress your liver is important and a lot of people abuse it. You don't have to drink alcohol to have liver problems I'd say there is a huge stigma whenever people hear about people having liver problems.

I suddenly developed fatty liver, I'm a non-drinker, no drugs and slim, it was either my diet or the heartburn drug (the only drug) I am taking. Right now my right side and back ache constantly it's not fun.

dhughes··on Nissan Tests 48 kWh Battery In Leaf
Just put a pantograph on top like electric trains.
dhughes··on The E-Cigarette Industry, Waiting to Exhale
Safer according to what study? People just assume they are safer.
dhughes··on My dad unexpectedly uses my Linux laptop to get real work done
My 70 year-old mom can't handle the swipe unlock on an Android phone and won't answer or use it if I unlock it. My dad also 70 is OK with using it and even put on a password but he keeps shutting it off when he isn't using it, neither use a computer.
dhughes··on TSA loudspeakers threaten travelers with arrest for joking about security
Regarding #2:

I thought the Israeli approach worked because it uses layers rather than one big scary wall between you and the airplane. Educated guards (educated anyone!) certainly would help but it seems layers are the key.

dhughes··on Hostnames
Days of the week could get a bit confusing and possibly creating a "Who's on First" situation.
dhughes··on SpaceX Grasshopper 744m test flight [video]
As fantastic as that was I can't help but think that now I want a quadcopter with an HD video camera on it.
dhughes··on Nest introduces their Smoke Detector
There are fire alarms and smoke alarms also there are photoelectric and ionization types. Both are used for different purposes.
dhughes··on Did Modern Jews Originate in Italy?
Travel writer Rick Steves has an interesting article on the history of Roman Jews http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/destinations/italy/jewish_leg...
dhughes··on And Then Steve Said, ‘Let There Be an iPhone’
I got a Mac more to get experience with an Apple product but I can't stand the iPhone.
dhughes··on Microsoft brings 18-year-old game 'Hover' to browser
Let me get my old CD-ROM and have it sound like a jet engine too.

dhughes··on Ship crosses Northwest Passage, sails into history
It's not so much the shipping that is upsetting it's the arrogant dismissive tone by certain countries deciding the water belongs to everyone because it's convenient for them.

When your so-called friends ignore your sovereignty and we are so small population-wise what choices do we have for defence? I know the US wouldn't stand for it if the situation was reversed.

Good luck with search and rescue too we have a tough time now finding ships and planes we know about let alone some unknown ship who knows where. The recent Coast Guard helicopter crash is a good example the ship that the helicopter came from knew where they were but still couldn't get to them before they occupants froze to death. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/three-die-in-ca...

Prime Minister Harper is putting a push on lately to visit the north but it's more PR than anything but his party has spoken about building massive Coast Guard ships to patrol the arctic in the winter. I think they had giant tracked wheels on the front to help break ice; the bows of ice breaking ships ride up onto the ice they don't push through the ice.

dhughes··on Looking back on the game 'Myst' on its 20th anniversary
Other than the graphics the big thing I remember about Myst is the gameplay was so different than arcade style games, it was a thinking game.

It was one of the main reasons I finally took the plunge and got a PC, nearly $4,000 (1993/94 Canadian dollars) to play a game :P well more than that but it was a good part of it.

At the time a PC in a private home wasn't really all that common, at least in my region, so this hot game on this thing called an "IBM compatible personal computer" piqued the interest of many people and drove sales.

dhughes··on How to start up a Boeing 737 [video]
I'm still wondering how the camera which seems to be held in his hand and then it shows him using two hands to do one check, and it looks like it's in front of his face not held by someone else off to the side; Google Glass?

edit: I'm seeing things it was just one hand.

dhughes··on How to start up a Boeing 737 [video]
Not to mention the walk around.
dhughes··on Dinosaur Feathers Found in Ancient Amber
Or an actual 68 million year old T. rex leg bone with blood vessels, still soft: http://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/dinosaur.html
dhughes··on Auto-Brewery Syndrome: Apparently, You Can Make Beer In Your Gut
My guess is an alcoholic person would be less susceptible since they drink more alcohol than the average person, alcohol being the waste product of yeast would make for a bad environment.

In a person who doesn't drink much the stomach environment would be better since I am picturing the waste going downward towards the gut leaving the yeast to live in peace.

dhughes··on My Friends and I Bought an Island
Whoops! Didn't see that, good catch ;)
dhughes··on My Friends and I Bought an Island
That storm was unusual but we do often get a few Nor' Easter storms in the winter and at -20C and 100km/h to 120km/h it can be a bit rough.
dhughes··on My Friends and I Bought an Island
> caught wild crabs...

You may want to check with the DFO (Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans) on that. Licenses are sold for many types of shellfish and you want have fishers with licenses for crab, clam, oysters etc. near the island. http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/species-especes/shell...

Recently one lobster fisherman (farther off shore) was caught cutting trap lines and the owner of the lines shot him a few times and then ran him over in his boat. Fishing is taken very seriously in this region, it's all some people have done for many generations.

Other than that you should be fine.

dhughes··on Apple Unveils The iPhone 5S
Ah, didn't see the "test cases" part.
dhughes··on Infectious disease doesn't care why you're unvaccinated
It was avian based influenza, birds spread it to remote areas of the world.
dhughes··on Apple Unveils The iPhone 5S
>According to Apple, half of users don’t set up a passcode on their device.

How could they know that?

dhughes··on Infectious disease doesn't care why you're unvaccinated
Killing about 5% of the entire population of the world about 100 million people, just imagine now with seven billion if a flu outbreak killed 350 million people.

Even people on remote islands in the middle of oceans died from the flu.

dhughes··on Infectious disease doesn't care why you're unvaccinated
A family from my region went on a trip to Wales and both kids contracted measles and were sick when they returned. When the children were young the parents never had them vaccinated and now they're sick.

It was just sheer luck this happened when school was out, the school system here doesn't require kids to be vaccinated as most places in Canada require.

It's so easy for a stupid thing to escalate into a world-wide event all because of a few anti-vaccination idiots.

dhughes··on Tech From a 30-Year-Old Sears Catalog
From age 14 to 31 I worked for my uncle who had a coin-op business from what I recall the Dragon's Lair arcade game used the CED but it may have been a Video Laser Disc player I can't remember but I do know the thing was huge and never worked.
dhughes··on Microsoft Retiring Master Certifications And Training
I typed out a long reply but realized I essentially agree with everything you said.

Well said.

dhughes··on Microsoft Retiring Master Certifications And Training
Yes, I mean at worst you could say it's better than nothing but certifications do certainly light a fire under some people who otherwise wouldn't bother to learn. And yes certifications can be abused by some, some people have photographic memories (a surprisingly large number!).

I see some CompTIA certifications have implemented performance based testing which is more knowing than memorization, which I like. Passing scores were creeping up more every year maybe that was a response to people passing due to memorization or sheer luck?
