dhughes··on The Rise and Fall of the Hotel Mini-Bar
Convenience is the key do you really want to go to the grocery store and pay $1.69 the minibar at $3.00 or split the difference and try the vending machine for $2.25?

A similar concept is in Vancouver, BC Canada where vending machines in condo lobbies http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/groceries-fro...

dhughes··on New police radars can 'see' inside homes
What if it's passive? Wifi from the routers of homes emit the RF energy and all the police do is use a detector I could see that as legal since it's energy being emitted just as if it were light shining out a window and you were a silhouette.

http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/133936-using-wifi-to-see-...

>The system, devised by Karl Woodbridge and Kevin Chetty, requires two antennae and a signal processing unit (i.e. computer), and is no larger than a suitcase. Unlike normal radar, which emits radio waves and then measures any reflected signals, this new system operates in complete stealth.

dhughes··on Resignation from the pkg-systemd maintainer team
Or #shirtgate when idiot "journalist" (The Atlantic's Rose Eveleth) went ballistic over Philae ESA Project Scientist Matt Taylor's shirt.

Matt had a shirt on with women similar to WWII bomber girls, fully clothed in 1940s/1950s style corsets or as Rose Eveleth and her foaming at the mouth outraged Twitter followers say they are naked women.

Some people get outraged at nothing these days.

dhughes··on In Canada, find a penny, recycle it
If you pay in cash it gets rounded up or down e.g. $1.03 becomes $1.05 if it's $1.02 it's $1.00 but if you pay via debit card or credit card it doesn't change.

Here is the government's explanation http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/gncy/lmntnpnny/menu-eng.html

dhughes··on Cubans trace roots to remote Sierra Leone village
My screen brightness has broken it's so bright why are my eyes so watery, obviously it's the screen.
dhughes··on Is the Toilet Free?
It should have a gas alarm on it to at least add 10 minutes after a flush.
dhughes··on Did removing lead from petrol spark a decline in crime?
Yup, Cosmos was on tonight, subject: lead. It's nice to see it got some brains fired-up.

PBS also had a great series the Poisoner's Handbook about different poisonous elements and the one about lead was more in-depth about leaded gasoline. Charles Norris was an amazing person! http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/introduc...

dhughes··on Nike fires majority of FuelBand team, will stop making wearable hardware
Possibly this http://fellrnr.com/wiki/GPS_Accuracy

It seems Garmin is more accurate.

dhughes··on The Invention of the AeroPress
I wonder if I could just use a large bore syringe and some cotton wadding?
dhughes··on Why isn’t New Zealand richer and more productive?
I'm a bit farther east.
dhughes··on Why isn’t New Zealand richer and more productive?
It's like that where I am in eastern Canada people go out smoke weed and drink every weekend if not every night!

Most have menial jobs just enough to get by with government assistance.

Yet everyone goes to Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico every year and they make nothing. I can see how all-inclusive vacations became so popular.

I work with 20-year-olds who laugh if they are sent home at work for doing something wrong or if sent home due to some issue at work. A few have travelled all over Europe, Australia, South America yet make nothing as a salary I probably make four times what they do but can't see how they can afford it let alone me.

People are OK with you if you pay your bills nobody freaks out or looks down on you if you aren't super successful or even if you don't work full-time.

dhughes··on Processed foods that dilute protein content subvert our appetite control systems
Wouldn't that be something with an umami taste?
dhughes··on New axe design uses lever action to make splitting wood easier
It also easier to spit wood when it's cold out -10C to -20C it seems to crack better.

I used to hate fall as a kid when wood splitting season began. Pneumatic splitters are great but slow. You learn to hate hard wood when splitting but it's great to burn.

An old joke: I was 10 years-old before I learned my name wasn't "Get wood!"

dhughes··on Canadian bill to crack down on illegal downloads has privacy experts worried
With PM Harper and his goons you know that the nicer the Conservatives try to make it sound the worse it is, just like the Fair Elections Act bill.
dhughes··on Ask HN: What would you do with a Billion dollars?
It's hard to say it would be a battle between immediate versus long-term. And by that of course I mean I would have to share it with poor around the word I think most people would.

Water, food, vaccines, education all important but water is probably the most needed.

But if invested smartly a smaller amount over a longer time but time is the enemy, do I help more people right now and fewer later or a few people over a longer time period?

I don't think I want a billion dollars it's too much responsibility and I'm not even very good at managing my own life.

dhughes··on Mercedes Is Owning This Formula 1 Season
I've only been to one F1 race in person that was 1988 in Montreal and I couldn't believe the noise, vicious! My teeth vibrated, even my bones I couldn't believe I could feel my freaking skeletal bones vibrate. Some friends and I went because the turbos were going to be banned in 1989.

I was 19 years old and the only thing I remember about the trip is 1) the noise! 2) crazy Italians 3) crazy Brazilians 4) strip club under a Burger King

dhughes··on Rare 'goat-sheep' born on Irish farm
The super rare Hat.
dhughes··on Vatican to Digitize 41 Million Pages of Ancient Manuscripts
I find it amazing that the books and manuscripts are still around hundreds if not a thousand years later meanwhile the dye medium of my data CDs from the mid 90s is probably rotten.
dhughes··on Consumer Safety Notice for Nest Protect: Smoke and CO Alarm
It does, the light ring changes to indicate you're seen by the Nest Protect and when you wave to silence a smoke alarm the Nest Protect says "Smoke alarm hushed."

dhughes··on Tesla Motors plans to debut cheaper car in early 2015 (2013)
Porsche (pour-sha damn it!) executives were pretty smart back in 2008, but I guess VW owns them now.

dhughes··on Democracy at 4 AM: What unprecedented protest means for Taiwan
Taiwan may get "Putin-ed", step 1 cause citizen outrage, step 2 citizens revolt against their corrupt government step 3 China moves in to help stabilize the country without a government.
dhughes··on Tesla Adds Titanium Underbody Shield and Aluminum Deflector Plates to Model S
I think it's amazing how any vehicle maker can idiot-proof any vehicle, the general population seems to be suicidal and then blames the manufacturer for not protecting them during their 110mph missile ride.

reddit's /r/Justrolledintotheshop and /r/TalesFromRetail/ makes me wonder how people manage to use any product without killing themselves.

dhughes··on The Brutal Ageism of Tech
About ten years ago I went to an IT job fair while I was in first year CS I had gone late in life so at 32 I felt I was finally doing the right thing. I thought maybe I could get some tips maybe even get a job even just apprentice/intern, anything.

Well I could have run around the job fair naked and on fire and I bet I still couldn't get anyone look at me.

One local CS professor not mine he was the other one at the Uni didn't even look up or acknowledge me. What's a hoot is he was older than me smoked weed and partied with his students, talk about having a mid-life crisis.

dhughes··on How does the authentication in the new UK £1 coin work?
Casino chips use RFID chips and special edging as well as infrared marks.

Now one company wants to use plant DNA in a similar way as ISIS is used in metal coins. [2010] http://www.casinoenterprisemanagement.com/articles/october-2...

dhughes··on Brazilian Billionaire Creates Plan to Beat Death
Certainly genetics are part of this as you say his parents both lived to 94 and 98.

But I would say what may help him live longer than his genetics would allow is the consistency of his health care.

Being rich allows him the luxury of health care, I think this is the biggest factor helping him and being able to eat well i.e. good quality food which is expensive. Even though here in Canada we have socialized medicine and at times it sucks at least it's consistent in that we have the care available. For small problems or major ones it's the daily availability of being able to get help and not waiting until it's too late due to lack of coverage or money to pay a doctor.

dhughes··on Behind the stick of the SR-71
At least you don't have to be born with perfect vision like the old days, with laser eye surgery now anyone can be a pilot!
dhughes··on The LAPD Spies on Millions of Innocent Folks
How much of this and the NSA are due to the "gee whiz" effect as I call it? These organizations have cool new technology so they want to use it for no other reason than that.

It's like the HTML blink tag it was annoying and pretty much useless but just because it existed people used it.

dhughes··on Idaho law criminalizes secretly filming on farms
That is what is wrong with this situation, someone with a camera chooses what to show or not show maybe there was an accident, maybe an inexperienced new employee or some technique that seems cruel but is necessary (de-horn, castrate, shear wool, horse shoes) but the film maker from a city finds disturbing.

For example near where I live there is a "slaughterhouse" that use the same techniques as other similar slaughterhouses but the one near me gets a lot of press and outrage.

The slaughterhouse I refer to is open to the outside it's on ice and it's seals not cow, bulls, pigs or chickens but it's the same process a bash on the head and then chop up the carcass. It just seems worse due to red blood on white ice and being out in the open not in a building.

dhughes··on Fashions in Shaving and Trimming of the Beard, 1842-1972 [pdf]
I recall reading about Amish men and why they grow a bead but no moustache apparently it was a protest against military organizations where a moustache was mandatory.
