dendriti··on Sparta was more than an army of super warriors
None of those are "history" in the sense of academic historical text looking at primary sources. They were all written with agendas, none of which were "document the historical reality of the Spartans".
dendriti··on Why doesn’t natural immunity count in the US?
This exchange is increasingly unhinged. Covid should not be addressed because obesity is a problem and because the US invaded Iraq?
dendriti··on People are realizing that degrowth is bad
Degrowth is a tool - it is neither good or bad. To dismiss the entire concept as "Environmental nutters don't like SUVs and want to ban them!" just muddies an already turbid debate.
dendriti··on UK national extradited to US for film/TV piracy
If you actually read the link, Strauss is not being "extradited to another country for potential imprisonment" just for criminal copyright infringement.
dendriti··on The Sweden experiment: how no lockdowns led to mental health, healthier economy
While I don't doubt you have Swedish family, I would like to see your data for the French economy being "killed". Certainly the economy contracted somewhat, but they seem to be doing just fine now.
dendriti··on Afghans are racing to erase their online lives
Strange that you're worried about someone "reaching into your computer" but seem to have no problem using Discord, whose disrespect for personal privacy is legendary.
dendriti··on The time Pepsi got sued for a $33M fighter jet
'Bad faith' is a term literally intended for situations such as these. When you do something 'according to the rules' but clearly against the intent of the rules.
dendriti··on The secretive, semi-illicit world of WhatsApp mango importing
That's interesting. I was under the impression that Facebook filled the group chat niche in the US.
dendriti··on In internal memo, Apple addresses concerns around new Photo scanning features
Once again, "People can already do this" is not a rebuttal or a defense.
dendriti··on In internal memo, Apple addresses concerns around new Photo scanning features
Do you really think that "Apple is capable of doing this" is a meaningful rebuttal to "Apple will actually do this"?
dendriti··on Cloudflare's inaccessible browser contradicts the company's mission
I find it deeply ironic and a little sad that you cite the intentions of the original designers of ARPANET and the Internet, then describe about how you've commercialized the Internet.
dendriti··on Restaurant workers quit at record rate
If the biggest downsides to paying workers a living wage you can think of are asking for ketchup and fetching yourself a glass of water at a midrange restaurant... I think that's a fine tradeoff.
dendriti··on Stopping FTP support in Firefox 90
Who is this user, who needs an FTP client, but only sometimes, and doesn't know where to find one?
dendriti··on Google Drive bans distribution of “misleading content”
As you can see here, the purpose of climate change denialism isn't to convince anyone. It's just to delay serious action for as long as possible using handwaving and appeals to authority. Here, the fact that the author is a Professor [sic] is used to add weight to his arguments, even though a vast majority of "Professors" acknowledge that climate change is real.
dendriti··on Why do we use R rather than Excel?
I was responding to the claim that Excel "doesn't alter data without being asked either." I guess it does, and it should?
dendriti··on Show HN: Get paid to have engaging conversations with old people
I agree, the stated goal is to build a database with the names and contact information of lonely, isolated seniors. I don't think the designer is actually malicious, but if he were...
dendriti··on Why do we use R rather than Excel?
the only way to prevent Excel from converting date-like number values into 'real dates' is to format the number values as text. or escape each and every number value so this doesn't occur.

this is not just a workaround - it's recommended by Microsoft. because you literally cannot turn this functionality off.

how is that not an "Excel issue"?

dendriti··on We can now harvest usable lithium from seawater: study
Adding 'seawater' to almost any engineering problem massively increases costs due to corrosion.
dendriti··on Tesla Says Autopilot Makes Its Cars Safer. Crash Victims Say It Kills
Yes, a terrible example, for the reasons above.
dendriti··on “I wish I could have licensed the Id source code releases as BSD”
We don't know how many projects would never have been written at all without GPL as a license option. Making it difficult to determine whether it's a net negative or not.
dendriti··on Tesla Says Autopilot Makes Its Cars Safer. Crash Victims Say It Kills
So the Autopilot in a Tesla is designed to allow the driver to check the weather and plan her destination?

Aircraft don't often cluster together meters apart and travel in the same directions. If they did, Autopilot would certainly be used differently. This is why I think it is irresponsible to use the term for automobiles.

dendriti··on Ohio GOP ends attempt to ban municipal broadband after protest from residents
Someone above explained exactly how and why a state/Federal grant is different than local taxes.
dendriti··on Turn your old, cracked Android phone into a backup server
Charge your battery to 40%, so that it will be able to charge to 100% for more charging cycles...

I know you're joking, but I've seen this logic at play elsewhere.

dendriti··on Penthouses and poor doors: how Europe's 'biggest regeneration project' fell flat
Industry and government love to blame the little guy.

The fact is, the Grenfell disaster wouldn't have happened if the local council had used the proper materials during construction. To conflate this with a table in a lobby is odd.

dendriti··on The Expanse UI Design
The Martian's take on potatoes is not very hard at all. Not only is Martian soil loaded with percholrates, it would have taken far longer than shown to prime the soil with enough microbes to support the growth of so many potatoes.
dendriti··on France is testing free public transport
You're mistaking me for a proponent of UBI because I gave a clear definition that didn't involve trivializing the needs of the poor. I actually don't think it would work.
dendriti··on France is testing free public transport
My workplace's monthly coffee mug giveaway is "free stuff". An impoverished family's housing allowance is not "free stuff". Can you see the difference?
dendriti··on France is testing free public transport
The characterization of UBI as "free stuff" is a non-starter. It's an emotionally-laden term which also fails to consider how UBI proponents frame the benefits in terms of establishing a baseline quality of life (food, shelter, clothing). To conflate that with "free stuff" as if we're discussing free government-provided Playstations won't move the debate forward.
dendriti··on Teardown of a PC Power Supply
Whenever I experience issues which are likely related to a power supply, it is much easier to drop in a known-good replacement than to spend time diagnosing the specific issues. Also better to remove a potentially faulty PSU before it damages much more expensive hardware.
dendriti··on Teardown of a PC Power Supply
I still don't think it's a good idea for the average tinkerer to take apart a power supply. Almost never worth it.
