davidkuennen··on Decline in independent activity as a cause of decline in child mental health
When I was little (20 years ago), I left the house in the morning and came back in the evening. My parents didn't really care what I did. It was the same for all the children in our small village.

We played in the forest, created tree homes, tunnels and much more. It was an incredible time which I'm certain helped me a lot in my development.

Granted, I was growing up on a farm in Germany. There wasn't much traffic or other "dangers".

davidkuennen··on "You have a 27% 'AI' issue in here"
I really want to know as well.

Why was the carpet so important to them?

davidkuennen··on Satya Nadella Says Copilot Will Be as Significant as the PC
Still waiting for "GitHub Copilot for Your Codebase" [0]. I think this will be a huge improvement over the already very useful Copilot.

davidkuennen··on Show HN: ElectricSQL, Postgres to SQLite active-active sync for local-first apps
Congrats to the team. Very nice project.

I'm interested in your calculation for compute cost savings. You have savings of 40k$ for 2k queries per second. I'm currently using GCP CloudSQL (Postgres) and have > 2k requests per second (for tables with billions of rows) for 200$/month. Is there a scenario that I'm overlooking?

Edit: Saw the explanation on your website. Apparently you're comparing it to AWS Aurora which charges for the amount of queries.

davidkuennen··on Subdomain.center – discover all subdomains for a domain
It also doesn't find any subdomains for my domain.

In my case I use Google Cloud DNS. Maybe they have some sort of protection in place (I wouldn't be surprised).

davidkuennen··on Threads users down by more than a half
They should've launched globally. Not including Europe was a big mistake in my opinion.
davidkuennen··on Air quality reporting on iOS
I'm also curious why there's no data for countries like Belgium, Switzerland and Austria.
davidkuennen··on Ask HN: Dev productivity tools you would pay for
* Github Copilot

* ChatGPT

The other tools I use (VSCode, ...) are free

davidkuennen··on Re: I Don't Use Copilot
I use it and not having it feels like there's something important (helpful) missing when coding.
davidkuennen··on Apple Vision Pro Is Apple's New VR Headset
Does 24,000,000 pixels in total mean a resolution of ~3464x3464 pixels per eye compared to 2064x2208 of the quest 3?
davidkuennen··on WhatsApp Down
I guess you're right. Not much.
davidkuennen··on WhatsApp Down
Did META just kill off WhatsApp during the Apple presentation when Apple is presenting their own VR solution?

Or am I reading too much into this?

davidkuennen··on Apple unveils new Mac Studio and brings Apple Silicon to Mac Pro
I'm thinking more in the lines of getting this kind of attention it a strong indicator to get sherlocked [1] by Apple in the future. For example the hydration app.

davidkuennen··on Apple unveils new Mac Studio and brings Apple Silicon to Mac Pro
As a developer I'd be terrified if Apple was showing my app in one of these events.
davidkuennen··on Blizzard CEO denies culture of harassment and blames unions for company problems
Looking forward to Microsoft acquiring this mess. Can only get better.
davidkuennen··on Israeli Translator Destroys ChatGPT Hebrew Translation of the Great Gatsby
And here I am having my app translated to 7 more languages by ChatGPT in production, without any complaints from my users, effectively saving me 5k$+.

Hebrew wasn't one of them though.

davidkuennen··on How to Stare at Your Phone Without Losing Your Soul
I would've agreed some time ago.

Today I think it's okay to not optimize everything for efficiency and it's also okay to waste some time on mindless things.

davidkuennen··on Spain breaks record temperature of 38.8C (101.84F) in April
Thank you! We will do our best.
davidkuennen··on Spain breaks record temperature of 38.8C (101.84F) in April
Traveling to Thailand in two days.

There's currently a record heat as well. [1]

davidkuennen··on Netflix to invest $2.5B in South Korea to make TV shows, movies
It certainly is a matter of taste and I agree on the over-acting part.
davidkuennen··on Netflix to invest $2.5B in South Korea to make TV shows, movies
Yes, that's it.

They just want some feel-good stuff to watch and I fully support that. :-)

davidkuennen··on Netflix to invest $2.5B in South Korea to make TV shows, movies
Not surprising.

I'm from Germany and all my mother watches these days are Korean dramas on Netflix.

She tells me that, in contrast to Western productions, they show more feelings and are less "cold" when interacting with each other.

davidkuennen··on Google Cloud Europe service disruption
TBH, GCP isn't operating like Google does.

I'm a long time customer and have only good things to tell so far.

davidkuennen··on Silver Lake to buy Germany's Software AG in $2.42B deal
I'm from Germany and hearing about them for the first time as well.
davidkuennen··on OpenAI has applied for “GPT” trademark with USPTO
They make their AI accessible to anyone. Sounds pretty open to me. Maybe not for developers, since they associate „open“ with open source, but surely for everyone else.
davidkuennen··on Why does a plastic-wrapped turkey sandwich cost $15 at the NYC airport?
Was able to enjoy the Business Class Lounge a few weeks back in JFK Airport. The lounge sounds almost like a steal in comparison when reading those prices.
davidkuennen··on Chasing Rainbows: Designing for Colorblindness
In my financial app I added a colorblind option that changes the chart and price colors to make it more accessible for my colorblind users.
davidkuennen··on Ask HN: Is it worth submitting a claim for FTX holdings?
That's heartbreaking. I feel for your son.

You should file a claim, but keep expectations low.

davidkuennen··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
Never thought about it like this. Yeah, nobody would question the safety of many European cities even if something like this were to happen. It would be considered a freak incident.
davidkuennen··on UK airport scraps 100ml liquid rule with new scanners
I think it's rather to encourage us to fly.

Many people are scared of flying and only do so, because they know it's the safest form to travel. If that would change, many people would refrain from flying.
