dangerboysteve··on My Hunt for the Original McDonald’s French-Fry Recipe
I recall a story a while back about a Hindu mini riot in India when people learned what they thought were vegan fries were cooked in beef fat.
dangerboysteve··on The Donut King who went from rags to riches, twice
This was the article I read about the Donut King back in 2014 and the genesis for the movie

dangerboysteve··on PRET – Printer Exploitation Toolkit
While playing with Shodan.io many year back I was taken back how many open printers there were on the internet. Even large office multifunction devices with the default password still enabled. Many of these where in University settings. How was this even possible ?
dangerboysteve··on 100 Years on a Dirty Dog: The History of Greyhound (2013)
Freight is also a good part of their business much like the airlines. No mention of that in the article.

dangerboysteve··on Why do printers still suck?
I have an old Samsung scx-4626 multi-function laser and its been problem free ever since I purchased it. rock solid device. I also use good paper that does not have all that paper dust from cheaper brands.

dangerboysteve··on Pianojacq, an easy way to learn to play the piano
This is good timing. I was thinking about taking up the piano for fun. My plan is to rent a keyboard for a month (Roland FP10/FP30) and going the YouTube route to see if I liked it.
dangerboysteve··on The High Privacy Cost of a “Free” Website
Jaron Lanier gave a good Ted talk about the problem with free. I'm not sure it would have changed things as greed always seems to win.

dangerboysteve··on Samsung TV owners complain about increasingly obtrusive ads
You forgot to add:

"We need to think of our devices as small hyper local billboards with untapped potential"

dangerboysteve··on CIA Labs
Is the NSA also working on the same projects?
dangerboysteve··on Getting Fiber to My Town [video]
I recall reading somewhere where Australia has a system where the government owns/runs all the common network infrastructure, even to the home, as a for-profit entity and then allows any entity to rent and provide services on the shared infrastructure. This seems brilliant to me. I think its called https://www.nbnco.com.au/
dangerboysteve··on Is anybody still using Windows 95?
What did the ISA boards do?

Also the name sounded familiar, this was the radio telescope which incurred damage recently.

dangerboysteve··on How long does a freezer stay frozen when the power goes out?
Oh god, I remember this as well. We had a small chest freezer in the basement. It had this one "feature" that if the power went out it would not startup again until you flicked the power switch. For extended power outages lasting days this makes some sense but for a limited outage of a few hours this was bat shit crazy. Similar experience from the article, rotting meat, had to carry the freezer up the garage to clean it. Water + soap, bleach, lemon juice and many other combinations. Nothing would get rid of the smell even cleaning the rubber gaskets and seals. I even tried spraying the entire inner surfaces with Fabreeze odor killer and leaving it closed for a few days.
dangerboysteve··on ‘Mulan’ is coming to Disney+ on September 4, for an additional price of $29.99
When my wife and I watch a film I only go to shows with the large seats, which are reserved and I can get food and alcohol brought to me. So they price they are quoting is worth it to me and still comes out cheaper if I get to watch in the comfort of my home. Even for a small family in general seating this is still cheaper than tickets and movie snacks.
dangerboysteve··on US travel firm $4.5M ransom negotiation open chat
Western union was used to pay off parties in the past before Bitcoin.
dangerboysteve··on Banks are slow to increase rates on savings accounts, but quick to reduce them
I wonder if most people start out banking based on where their parents bank? And most only switch when there is an event which make them unhappy with the bank.

The hardware physical/cloud toggle is also interesting.
dangerboysteve··on Nitrome to convert its Flash game library to HTML5

dangerboysteve··on Tell HN: Triplebyte reverses, emails apology
I disagree, the site is by developers for developers. Every developer on planet earth is well aware of privacy issues and the evil dark pattern of negative options. They knew this ahead of time, they took a gamble and shit hit the fan. The apology is not heartfelt or sincere, its just damage control.

If they want to correct this mistake, turf the product manager or make a $25K donation to the EFF as an act of penance.

dangerboysteve··on How to make pizza like a Neapolitan master
I use packed dry yeast but I have always let my dough do a slow rise in the refrigerator for a minimum of 3 days up to 6 days. I use 00 flour and cook the pizza's using my Roccbox pizza oven or a custom Baking Steel 23x19 3/8" steel in the oven.

Also if you want a good guide for NY style pizza then this is a good read.

dangerboysteve··on Build a real-time Twitter clone with LiveView and Phoenix 1.5
The video is hilarious in a good way. You can hear the disbelief and amazement in Chris McCord's voice when Liveview works as he (and team) developed it.
dangerboysteve··on Tell HN: Toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and now web cams
I can also confirm, many local computer stores and distributors have had a huge run in basic headsets and webcams. Game headsets are in stock.
dangerboysteve··on Running your own secure communication service with Matrix and Jitsi
if you go to the jitsi.org site and start a meeting, there is a share box that can be popped up and it shows a dial-in number for your conf. So it must have sip integration.
