i can get better unbiased advice out of online forums. even after going to freebsd i continued to use ubuntuforums, because the advice tended to be great. the arch wiki also rules.
i would rather use a forum or irc then call some dipshit on the "vendor" support line. all i want from a hardware vendor is a sane warranty. otherwise they can keep their worthless phone monkeys
all of these concepts put TOO MUCH information on the page
its at the level of NOISE
i want less information - i want the information when i need it, not in an unending stream. my best "default" ui - a blank screen. i haven't signalled that i need infomation yet, so don't give me any. when i request data, give me only what i ask for
classic abuse of these examples - weather data. who the hell actually runs these weather widgets that show you the weather on your desktop??? wow, its 78 and sunny, just like it was two minutes ago! this is the type of data people ACTUALLY check once a day or less. putting it in my face is just giving me more pointless noise to distract me
1. get an idea someone gives a shit about. 2. find someone to put money behind your idea. 3. then you can get your rocks off playing god with the stock options. without 1,2...talking about 3 is just mental masturbation
because he's following the herd
how about this for a plan - get married and have kids. you'll have a regular sex partner, and when you are sixty, you won't sit around wondering why you are alone
and if you save some money, take a winter off and be a ski bum. one year cruising between whistler, aspen, half the crazy ass monster resorts in the alps...beats the hell out of pissing into the wind in the website game
one big mistake they made was trying to reply to every troll on TC. anyone with a brain knows you go in there, make ONE post answering the obvious intelligent questions (that you can answer without looking like an ass), and bug out. their "exec" reponded to every post on the board and made himself look like a halfwit chasing trolls. basically he got owned by TC posters
doubtful. this is not a new practice. banks and investment houses have been buying options in private companies from potential shareholders for years
they sell it to banks and/or investment firms who are basically buying a futures contract on a facebook ipo. the employee loses their rights to sell these shares, the bank gains the rights.
okay i am officially a geezer...here is my two cents: have fun playing webmaster but don't put the calc book down just yet. most of your "contacts" (scoble etc) are legends only in their own minds. by time you get to college, everything about today's web will be obsolete. booting up wordpress is not going to get you far in 2014.
but there may be a gem of widsom here. you might find that eating ramen, getting fat, and running up your (or your folks in your case) credit cards to pay your hosting fees isn't as nearly as glamorous as PG and the YCult make it out to be.
kid you may also be missing a very big boat. webtech is becoming an idiot's game. the larry/sergey of your generation will likely be a chemist or physicist. don't get too charmed by the web "business"
i won't toot my horn but i leave at 5pm SHARP, go to the gym everyday, great benefits and 401k, and i get about $150k, lots of vacation time too
you think about how hard you would have to work on a startup to get that.
and what is with this trend of people buying core2duo boxes to run dvtm? top won't bother reporting idle of greater precision than 99.9 %
anywho, it seems emacs can give him his console orgasm while dropping a dynamic runtime that ties it together. news, email, irc, im (via bitlbee), web, and of course editing text now and then
"now, ya say ya stood in line fer 22 hours to buy a phone? that ain't right"
"ya know other operatin' systems do have web browsers"
opensolaris - they can't even give it away
honestly, who has dropped linux or freebsd for opensolaris?
this is a cautionary tale for MS - no one will care about your new os
WHY???? the whole point of the web server is to be a stateless middleware broker. do these fifty servers now have one virtual port 80? do all fifty need to be restarted on a config change? the premise of one web server running on a cluster makes no sense
i can saturate an outbound gb ethernet connection with apache on one box. what are the other 49 supposed to be doing????
do i need to buy win7 to use this?
What about cloud computing
plays to the strengths of linux, not windows
What about the future of the internet
MOBILE. steve jobs is right on this one and msft will end up having an even larger "skunk works" project to try to catch the iphone
its not a cliche. people are making real money. microsoft should be concerned
