cvg··on The Waymo Ojai Will Soon Offer Autonomous Rides Around the U.S.
Small thing, but the article should have added how to pronounce Ojai. It sounds like “oh-hi”
cvg··on MLow: Meta's low bitrate audio codec
Nice. Google's soundstream already has some great quality. Some examples at 6kbps here: https://google-research.github.io/seanet/soundstream/example...

cvg··on Children aged 2-6 successfully trained to acquire absolute pitch (2012)
Had to look up the technique, Eguchi method, and it uses color rather than complicated musical notation to associate with each key. Interesting how those who have synesthesia naturally have this same color, key association.
cvg··on Ask HN: Is prompt engineering just snake oil?
I like this framing by Michael Hashimoto, on Prompt Engineering:

https://mitchellh.com/writing/prompt-engineering-vs-blind-pr...

Most of what we see on Twitter or YouTube is Blind Prompting. However, it is possible to apply an engineering mindset to prompting and that is what we should call prompt engineering. Check out the article for a much more detailed framing.

Dair AI also has some nice info and resources ( with academic papers) about prompt engineering.

cvg··on Do you need a vector database?
This flexibility is a big draw. I can experiment with in memory, launch with cloud, and move to my own infra if I’m lucky enough to need that kind of scale.
cvg··on Archaeology and genetics can’t yet agree on when humans arrived in the Americas
Interesting read. I’m curious if anyone is familiar with the software they use to connect the genetic sequencing. I’m amazed that they can find migration patterns from this data.
cvg··on Ask HN: What is the most impactful thing you've built?
A JavaScript app that automated the resolution of half of Twitter’s support tickets. Logic got refactored after a few years, but still used at Twitter. Probably saved Twitter about $10 million a year over the last ten years.

cvg··on Why does Google still have the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button?
Likely because it's considered "Googley" within the company.
cvg··on Show HN: OnlyRecipe.app – Remove clutter from recipe sites
This is interesting. Looks like the app might be just parsing this schema from the webpage and adding a nice ui.
cvg··on Massive animal species discovered in half-billion-year-old Burgess Shale

cvg··on World’s first lab-grown meat facility pumps out 5k burgers per day
Lab grown pork from an Israeli company! Is this kosher?
cvg··on Launch HN: Ditto (YC W20) – Keep product text in sync from design to production
So excited about your launch. Congrats! I’ve seen this issue of copy-pasting copy at nearly all the companies I work for.
cvg··on New nuclear engine concept could help realize 3-month trips to Mars
In the paper, he recommends using a magnetic sail to slow the craft down from drag in the interstellar medium. Pretty fun stuff on page 6, 60 years to Alpha Centauri! Linked in the wiki or here, http://path-2.narod.ru/design/base_e/nswr.pdf
cvg··on Proteus Technology: New Material Is Strong, Light and Non-Cuttable
Sounds amazing, but how will we dispose of this? Looks like 760 C is required to form this. I imagine it will need to be heated above this to dispose of.
cvg··on U.S. Supreme Court deems half of Oklahoma a Native American reservation
Large parts of Tacoma Washington are tribal land owned by non-tribe members and it functions. I would assume a similar arrangement would work in Tulsa.
cvg··on A startup is testing a subscription model for search engines
I like this user-centric vision of the web where users are customers. We’re trained so deeply that ad supported is free, when really it’s just a deferment of costs. Companies always get you by adding marketing costs into their costs. Once Neeva cleans up their data policies, I’m al in with them.
cvg··on My dad got scammed for $3k worth of gift cards
If you’re in a store and see someone acting odd with gift cards, it’s ok to say something and try to help out.

I recently encountered an elderly woman fiddling with some purchased gift cards (at CVS) while talking to someone on her cell phone. They threatened to disconnect her power immediately if she didn’t pay for a new meter immediately. Luckily I convinced her to not share the numbers and hang up on the scammer. It took her a while to even trust me. Poor woman had no idea who to trust. I had her call the local utility who was super patient explaining the situation and consoling her.

cvg··on Show HN: Open-Source Alternative to Intercom, Drift, Zendesk, FreshChat
Nice job! Have you done any load testing on it? Curious how much server to buy to run an instance with some usage.
cvg··on BitTorrent inventor announces eco-friendly Bitcoin competitor Chia
I believe this is the recording of that Berkeley talk: https://www.facebook.com/BerkeleyBlockchain/videos/200606982...

Still a lot of implementation details to be revealed, but looks really interesting.

cvg··on Is Advertising Morally Justifiable? The Importance of Protecting Our Attention
Ironically enough, it may be CPC ads themselves that allow people protect their attention. Browser add ons like Ad Nauseam, http://adnauseam.io/, automatically click on ads (after first being blocked) and ensure that there's a high price to pay for playing in the ad game.
cvg··on You Can Spend $750 in International Data Roaming in One Minute on AT&T
That's the right way, but internet on landing was super convenient. I bought proper SIMs for the places I stayed longer than a few days, but did it outside the airport (cheaper and no lines) once I was settled in.
cvg··on You Can Spend $750 in International Data Roaming in One Minute on AT&T
This is crazy. International roaming is one reason I switched to T-Mobile. I recently traveled through Southeast Asia and had usable internet throughout Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam (looks like no more free internet in Vietnam). The internet was about 256-512 Kbps and was available even in rural locations. I also had access to my US number when I was on wifi - calls in and out. T-mobile coverage isn't perfect in the States, but overall pretty happy with the switch.

The most interesting part of the article, for me, is that they moved the nexus of their corporation from two tax free states to California. I doubt they realize the tax and legal implications of being residents rather than just visiting CA on holiday.
cvg··on Show HN: I'm a single founder. Please review my bootstrapped startup
Site looks great and service too.

One tiny nit on the logo, you should use hexagons instead of pentagons. Lots of hexagons fit together nicely. Pentagons, not so much.
