2. They would be much richer if they could.
Meanwhile I just get on with my day with index funds and get better returns.
E.g. .net framework/core, xbox, windows and now WSL
One of the perks being in the same space is that it is much easier to clear up misunderstandings. Things like body language, facial expressions really do play a huge part in our communication. Especially if people are from different cultures. Also, a lot of juniors are already nervous when they start so having people with friendly body language around helps.
Being in the same space and doing shared activities also helps people gel together. Looking back at my days as a junior and as buddies later, I just don’t think zoom meetings are equal to shared activities like morning coffees and occasional table tennis to blow off steam. I don’t think I would have gotten along with some people if it weren’t for shared experiences in the office.
All this being said, I really do love wfh though. So I often think about how we could get the best of both worlds.
Not all of them worked out. But I don’t think I regret any of them. Though I think this was much easier because I was not married. Nowadays I do have to think about people nearby when I try to blow up my life.
Also, I’ve found myself starting to yearn for some stability after all these years of change. It would be nice to put my roots down and join or cultivate nice communities.
I’ve tried out working in VR using oculus and immersed. I’ve really liked the experience but the blurry text was a deal breaker. From the reviews so far, that might not be a problem anymore.
This mentality and Agile mixed together creates monster technical debts. A team is rushed to create an MVP. Since it’s an MVP, things are skipped, rushed and riddled with edge cases. This is fine if the team can now use the customer feedback and deeper understanding of the domain to iterate and polish the product. Write some documentation, refactor rough edges etc.
But of course, this often doesn’t happen and the team begins sprinting to deliver on yet another “top priority”. After a while, management starts to wonder why doing anything takes forever and devs are leaving.
I try not to express this annoyance, so other people haven’t picked it up (though I'm sure it shows sometimes). It's something I'm trying to work on as suppressing that annoyance cannot be healthy for me.
I genuinely never had that fear in any of the places I worked at (or heard of one!). If that is a cause for termination or being written up, I'd probably look for some place else.
> Fake meetings are fine until it is discovered you did a fake meeting
My meetings are titled "focus time". It’s purely there to communicate to other team members why I may be unavailable during those time. If people need me during that time, they just ask me beforehand and I’m happy to oblige.
I understand and empathise how they came to be like that but I still cannot truly forgive them. I wish I can forgive and be at peace one day.
I found maintaining the Typescript codebase in the same company much easier.
If you look at Seoul, with similar density and public transit system but without a similar regulation for car ownership, you’ll find that the rate of car registration dramatically increases.
But in the end, I enjoyed Horizon’s tight combat system much more than BOTW.
I just remember going to a friends place and being bewildered at overflowing trust and joy in their normal interactions. At first, I thought it was because I was there as a guest. But turns out they actually enjoyed being with each other. Really opened my eyes up to what a family could be.
It limiting your options can be a good thing, people can just ship instead of being stuck in analysis paralysis forever.
I also found it quite nice entry point for newbie developers. I’ve been donating my time to help out new developers, and learning deployment (it isn’t ”basic” for complete newbies) on top of everything can be daunting. Vercel lets them deploy for free and effortlessly so that they can show off what they’ve learned.
That being said, I personally wouldn’t touch Vercel for any serious work either.
Those small clinics live and die by local ajummas' word of mouth, so anything helps.
e.g.
"I went to Haeng-bok clinic and the doctor told me to just rest up but it just won't go away"
"Aigo, Unnie~ I went to Sa-rang clinic last time I caught a cold - you know the one at that intersection - and the doctor gave me all these pills. The cold was gone the next day!"
In longer term, (pure speculation) I think China may believe that after a while, China would have so much global influence that even strategically autonomous EU would be reluctant to side with US even for blatantly "unjust" cause.
Definitely a factor. My wife is not Asian and she gets way more opportunities than me to make friends in Japan, though it is a double edged sword as being treated differently can get really annoying after a while.
- China has openly supported Macron's "strategic autonomy" principle which aims to distance EU from USA.
- Ever since Xi got his regime extended, they've been inviting nation leaders to increase their influence. In last 5 months, they've invited Germany, Iran, Spain, France and Brazil.
- They've brokered a peace deal between Iran and Saudi. Which is another loss for US influencer in middle east, threatening the current petrodollar hegemony.
Note that I'm not condemning China. It's just an observation. And honestly, they would be dumb if they didn't do this while US is pissing off their key allies with rate hikes and the IRA Act.
Though I have found that it can be quite hard to become close friends but it’s definitely possible.

I've also experimented with iOS timer to stop playing music after the set time is up and that worked well as a non intrusive reminder too.
For example, South Korea’s USD reserves has been sharply going down as they’ve been trying to resist following the recent rate hikes to soften the blow to the economy. This is happening all across the globe.
However, US can do (and seems to be doing) whatever they want.
