cptroot··on Will the Humanities Survive Artificial Intelligence?
This might be the first time I have seen someone both engage with LLMs as a producer of humanities artifacts, self-reflection and all, while also being cognizant of the underlying mechanisms.

It brings up some real questions about what does it mean to be, even if it doesn't ask whether our institutions are capable of recognizing that effort as valuable.

Off topic, it's extremely frustrating to see how few top-level comments are engaging with TFA. So many people are just using the headline as an excuse to pontificate.

cptroot··on After 'coding error' triggers firings, top NIH scientists called back to work
For what it's worth, if you get put on a RIF plan then you treat it like a firing. Them being on paid leave isn't them not being fired yet, it's severance.
cptroot··on Using Drop for safety in Rust
And here's the more straightforward documentation from the Nomicon that takes the initial blog post and explains it thoroughly and straightforwardly. (It doesn't mention pooping your pants though)

https://doc.rust-lang.org/nightly/nomicon/leaking.html

cptroot··on Genie 2: A large-scale foundation world model
For all that this is lauded as a "prototyping tool", it's frustrating to see Genie2 discarding entire portions of the concept art demo. The original images drawn by Max Cant have these beautiful alien creatures. Large ones floating, and small ones being herded(?). Genie2 just ignores these beautiful details entirely:

> That large alien? That's a tree. > That other large alien? It's a bush. > That herd of small creatures? Fugghedaboutit > The lightning storm? I can do one lightning pole. > Those towering baobob/acacia hybrids? Actually only two stories tall.

It feels so insulting to the concept artist to show those two videos off.

cptroot··on There is no fix for Intel's crashing 13th/14th Gen CPUs – damage is permanent
TFA sources Intel as saying even they don't know whether Laptops are affected, given similar circumstances.
cptroot··on The borrow checker within
I believe this self-references proposal won't cover structs that point inside themselves. Instead it would only allow you to store references that point inside other members heap allocations.
cptroot··on Clever code is probably the worst code you could write (2023)
FYI I think you've misinterpreted the parent. To my eyes it looks like they're agreeing that Rust makes summing a list easy using combinations. For example, this is how I would do it in Rust:

  x.iter().sum()
cptroot··on GPUs Go Brrr
Here's an example of Veritasium talking about this from 2022: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVsUOuSjvcg
cptroot··on Zed Decoded: Async Rust
This was a really neat dive into GPUI. The discussion about main thread vs background thread was interesting, especially as it relates to choices the rest of the async ecosystem has made.
cptroot··on Beyond A*: Better Planning with Transformers
I find it hard to believe that all the heavy-weight data processing and GPU computation really make a constant factor reduction in search steps worth it.
cptroot··on Video generation models as world simulators
As someone who's played probably too many hours of minecraft, these videos are nauseating. The way that all of the individual pieces exist, but have no consistency is terrifying. Random FoV changes, switching apparent texture packs, raytracing on or off, it's all still switching back and forth from moment to moment.

These videos honestly give me less confidence in the approach, simply because I don't know that the model will be able to distinguish these world model parameters as "unchanging".

cptroot··on SVG images can contain JavaScript
Notably, there's significant restrictions on loading external <script> tags if the original file was loaded through file://. This means that your idea would likely require a static file server or similar.
cptroot··on Attention didn’t collapse. It was stolen (2022)
One point that the article did land for me was the potential for individual change to be unhelpful. No-phone dinners only work if there isn't any sense of anxiety about not having your phone at dinner. That anxiety only goes away if you have an environment that allows you to unplug. Systemic changes like requiring workplaces to allow employees to have "off times" seem necessary to remove some of the baseline anxieties many of us have.

If you want to talk about kids specifically, then you'd need some way to alter the anxieties that affect them the most. Anecdotally, it seems like kids (teens especially) end up with lots of FOMO and loneliness. The only structural reforms I've seen suggested as solutions to those were much more drastic than the ones proposed for adults, like preventing teenagers from using social media at all.

cptroot··on Factorio: Space Age
There is no way Pyanodon's could be considered the "greatest" Factorio mod. 99% of Factorio players go "that looks like an awful time" when confronted with a single refining flow chart for a single mineral. I'd agree if you wanted to ask which factorio mod is the "most" that Pyanodon's is king and will never be dethroned.
cptroot··on Going Rogue
That was a nice read! I would have loved to take a brief dip into the less hardcore rogue-lite scene that sprung up, but that might have doubled the length again.
cptroot··on A rant on bus stops
I think memories of a low-regulation/high-trust society are hard to reconcile with America's long struggle with racial integration.
cptroot··on Americans have never been so unwilling to relocate for a new job
Hey now. Spare a thought for the corporate goons who decided war-induced shortages was a good time to goose profits by an order of magnitude.
cptroot··on Tweetbot is back down again
Thanks for the heads up that chronological timeline is getting disabled. I've disabled auto-updates for the Android app in the hopes that I can keep it for just a little bit longer. We'll see whether that works in the face of Musk's determination to make Twitter profitable.
cptroot··on “Nobody cares about your blog”
Perhaps you should read the article?

The title is a quote from a professor's assistant insisting that "blogs aren't real scientific publications". The (to me) blatant plagiarism of the blog author seems pretty awful, as does the insistence that the blog is "beneath their notice".

cptroot··on Why does calloc exist? (2016)
FYI this should have (2016) in the title. The first paragraph talking about HN appears to be referring to some old moderation drama that was recent when posted.
cptroot··on Tested: Where Does the Tone Come from in a Guitar Amplifier? [video]
Sharing here because I could not stop laughing with each discovery revealed. An excellent example of an average person using the scientific method to great effect.
cptroot··on “You meant to install ripgrep”
It's the correct default for me. I don't want to grep heinous output files by default, like my gigabytes of generated KML files. I appreciate that rg (and ag) ignores those files by default, and 90% of the people I show it to agree.
cptroot··on Removing SMS support from Signal Android (soon)
I don't think that's true? There are clearly users who are annoyed at being able to send insecure and possibly expensive SMS messages in their secure messaging app.
cptroot··on Facebook's TikTok-like redesign marks sunset of social networking era
I'd recommend you take a long hard look around if you think fascism isn't possible in the US. The modern GOP is now predicated on a belief that the last election was stolen, and that they need to steal the next one to compensate. Fascism doesn't require a coup, and it's plausible that US fascism won't use one.

Here, have a podcast about the subject: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-it-could-happen-here-307...

cptroot··on I made advanced BI queries with Scratch puzzle pieces
Thanks for making a whole blog post out of the anecdote mentioned yesterday. Really excellent to see the whole story!
cptroot··on Impressions from a first-time Mac user
Fn + left arrow is Home. Fn + right arrow is End.
cptroot··on Thoughts on the Witness (2016)
Having tried to create a witness puzzle pack myself, I can assure you they chose quality over quantity. Trying to explain a new mechanic without making it either cryptic or patronizing is nigh impossible, and they did it 8+ times.
cptroot··on Learning Standard C++ as a New Language (1999)
Doesn't this need a (1999) at the end? This is from before C++11.
cptroot··on Bevy game engine 0.6
Do you mind explaining why? Near as I can tell it should be the same unless you were already maxing out your CPU to run the game.
cptroot··on Audacity fork without any sentry telemetry or crash reporting
Where did you get that information? He has a post on his twitter clearly stating that it's not his department.
