cookieswumchorr··on Open source AI is critical – Hugging Face CEO before US Congress
for the leaked part yes. But the license can be whatever, even proprietary, if the source is disclosed it is open-source
cookieswumchorr··on An Aperiodic Monotile
i need this in my bathroom
cookieswumchorr··on Jailbreak Chat: A collection of ChatGPT jailbreaks
it is an obvious answer that a child is more valuable, but we have been told literally just that our whole lives, that children are the most valuable and important.

Cultures have existed (might still exist today) where an expensive property values more than a child.

cookieswumchorr··on Jailbreak Chat: A collection of ChatGPT jailbreaks
ethics is not math, how can you correctly or incorrectly answer an ethical dilemma
cookieswumchorr··on Turn your backyard into a biodiversity hotspot
i always do it with my refrigerator
cookieswumchorr··on Replacing my MacBook Air M1 with a ThinkPad T480
my laptop is plugged into a docking station at home as well as in the office. i only ever use it bare while in meetings, or travelling. So definitely no need for a mac in my case
cookieswumchorr··on Genders.wtf
curiously, in Russia, Caucasians is the collective term for the nations of the Caucasus, and it is often used to express Chauvinist opinions about them. Russians are usually confused when they are referred to as "Caucasian" in american paperwork
cookieswumchorr··on Salesforce will lay off 10% of staff as part of restructuring
The Romans knew what they were doing :)
cookieswumchorr··on Start a fucking blog
any idea how good the tooling mentioned there is? its the key to successfully applying this strategy, the best way would be to have it as a part of your blogging software/platform of choice and just working. because no one wants to do the monkey work of reposting everywhere
cookieswumchorr··on Start a fucking blog
depends on your physical location. and even if it's a rather unfortunate one you might get away with using tor or similar
cookieswumchorr··on Elon Musk’s $44B education on free speech
Musk ruining Twitter may be bad for his wallet, but actually good for the Freedom of speech in a way he didn't expect. The world doesn't need a platform ruled by people who know better. It needs decentralized means of communication where censorship is just technically not possible.

as for Musk, let's hope he will not ruin his other projects, i still want to see some people on Mars

cookieswumchorr··on Sharrow MX-1: Tipless propeller (2020)
well, the emission of all these pollutants should go down proportionally if you can save some fuel
cookieswumchorr··on Habits are not needs
you can skip most of it if you work remotely :)
cookieswumchorr··on Friendship Forever
well, yes. Having gay sex was criminal, holding hands was totally fine. Hell, forget holding hands, how about kissing each other on the lips? This used to be an acceptable behavior for straight folks. Remember the Brezhnev-Honecker portrait?
cookieswumchorr··on Lab-grown blood given to people in world-first clinical trial
the application i immediately thought about is disaster medicine.

This is when you need huge amounts of blood, and my guess is that it can be less perfect, when there is simply no other choice to save lives.

An inferior substitute is better than nothing

cookieswumchorr··on Why are so many babies born around 8:00 AM? (2017)
my first guess was that's when the paperwork for the night shift is done :)
cookieswumchorr··on Ask HN: How to deal with regret of not having kids
if you think your life is shit now, wait till you have an unpaid second job as a babysitter.

Seriously, whatever you think of kids, one thing is absolutely true: it's hard, it's very hard. Not in a poetic sense, but simply in terms of man-hours you will have to come up with.

Unless you live in a traditional patriarchal society, but if this were the case, you would probably have had several kids by now

cookieswumchorr··on “Women are wonderful” effect
this is just catering to the predominantly male audience of early tech adopters. I remember hearing that the landing assistant in soviet fighter jets has a female voice, because it has a soothing effect on the male pilots.
cookieswumchorr··on We built voice modulation to mask gender in technical interviews (2016)
is this really a bad strategy though? Assuming we have enough jobs to apply to (in tech), why not walk away once you feel your counterpart is not excited, and switch to the next one?
cookieswumchorr··on WikiHouse – Open source, modular, wood based, zero carbon housing
well, schools become irrelevant once kids grow up (that is, if you have any). A lack of shopping is good for the wallet, when you grow accustomed to buying in bulk and stacking food. the rest is all about your lifestyle preferences
cookieswumchorr··on WikiHouse – Open source, modular, wood based, zero carbon housing
the wood will usually be replanted, if they do it properly. But the basement it stands on- it still cement.
cookieswumchorr··on WikiHouse – Open source, modular, wood based, zero carbon housing
even in the US, i'm sure there are places where land is still cheap. Thinking globally, there's even more of them. That's the beauty of it being opensource: you can build in any part of the earth
cookieswumchorr··on Is the internet killing the nude beach?
maybe with the adoption of remote work we can, in future, decouple our professional identities from our private ones. The idea is: your private life is too unpredictable to effectively protect data from leaking. You have hobbies, friends, family, you end up buying tons of stuff, going to places.

Professional life, on the other side, tends to be more organized. What if, in future, you can work online under a username, decoupled from your IRL self.

this is already the case for some folks who get tasks on freelance platforms and get paid in crypto. Maybe in future this could become more accepted, and more legal (as in paying taxes, but without compromising privacy too much)

cookieswumchorr··on Mikhail Gorbachev has died
why are (western) Europeans such pussies? Like, really, short-term economic loss is not going to kill anyone. I'm glad to see that the eastern, slavic and baltic part of Europe can handle it so much better. Partly because they've been under totalitarian rule, and gone through the economic disaster it left behind. Which was waaay harder then the current cost surge
cookieswumchorr··on Your doppelgänger is out there and you probably share DNA with them
i just hope he isn't going to murder anyone. After all, i'm doing him the same favor
cookieswumchorr··on The silent majority in software
a professional community has the right to a place to communicate among themselves, about things they like and understand. This has nothing to do with dominion
cookieswumchorr··on Managers need to stop giving people feedback on their personality
id go see a doctor, let them give you some diagnosis too, and yell back next time he raises his voice
cookieswumchorr··on Absurd Trolley Problems
with a home, thats not universally true, if its pooorly insulated for example. trolleys, sure, they are all electric, so you can go down to zero emissions if you use green energy sources. Producing them though, metal production still runs with coal today just like in the 19th century
