cianmm··on Omg.lol: An Oasis on the Internet
I've been using Omg.lol for around a year now (Cian.lol) and am really enjoying it. It's just so simple - it feels like travelling back in time to when we wrote blog posts and made websites to share with our friends, not to Create Content.
cianmm··on IA Writer in Paper
They've got a Tokyo office so they're probably interested selling to that market too
cianmm··on Kagi Search – Paywalled articles indicator and improved weather widget
I remember trialing it a while back and gave up pretty fast due to the consistent very long delays when searching from Ireland.
cianmm··on Making it clear when we're on a call with you to protect you from fraud
While their security practices sound woeful and you did the right thing, why haven't you called your bank to unlock your card and give the feedback that the outsourcing is awful?
cianmm··on A map of ATMs designed to scam tourists in Europe
Kin has really had the Sherif Street tourism industry breaking new ground
cianmm··on You Paid $1k for an iPhone, but Apple Still Controls It
I’m in Dublin, Ireland. It is not common, but not uncommon. Kids and teenagers zip around high-footfall areas in the city centre (such as our financial district) on escooters and electric bikes, and literally grab the phones out of your hand as you’re using them. Minimal violence because they know they’d likely lose, but still pretty traumatic and the Gardaí (our police force) are two swamped in everything else to do a thing about it.

I know four people it’s happened to in two years, all four of them women.

cianmm··on Why is RC Cola popular in Tajikistan?
The Fritz rhubarb soda is incredible and I wish it were easier to find here in Ireland. It’s everywhere in Berlin.
cianmm··on Sam Bankman-Fried Convicted
I feel that if you agree that "99.999% of what is out there is a scam for morons" then it's pretty tough to argue that the industry isn't a grift.
cianmm··on Apple’s new Transformer-powered predictive text model
They do this for cycling directions in Apple Maps too.

Come on Apple, you KNOW you don’t support cycling directions in Ireland - stop getting my hopes up every time I ask for directions. Just only show the button when you’re in a geo that supports the feature.

cianmm··on Dutch e-bike maker VanMoof goes bankrupt, leaving riders stranded
As far as I know based on interactions in the owners form on Facebook (although I don't speak Dutch) he can't repair e-shifters, which are the most commonly broken proprietary part on the bikes.
cianmm··on Dutch e-bike maker VanMoof goes bankrupt, leaving riders stranded
Fairly old news at this stage, but worth pointing out for existing VanMoof owners that this doesn't brick your bike. Your bike can still be unlocked via the app, and via the PIN set when setting up the bike.

Cowboy (VanMoof competitor) have built an app[1] to let you save the encryption key used to unlock the bike, if you're worried about the VanMoof app going down.

The real pain here is all of the annoying brittle and priority parts in the bike. The next time your eshifter dies, that's it.

cianmm··on VanMoof, the e-bike startup, officially declared bankrupt in The Netherlands
My take on that at the time was that vested business interested didn’t want to see a direct connection made between cars, pollution, congestion, and wasting of space.

I also suspect that VanMoof hoped to cause a stir to get more articles written. Their QA may be shoddy, but their marketing is on point.

cianmm··on Cowboy rides to the rescue of VanMoof owners with app to unlock threatened bikes
If your phone battery dies you can unlock the bike by entering a PIN using a sequence of button presses. It takes about 10 seconds.

I get that you might not see the value in the product, but please try empathise with those who might find it useful.

Personally, it (along with a few other security features) caused the bike thieves who stole my VanMoof recently to give up on the bike and dump it where I was able to grab it thanks to a combination of VanMoof’s inbuilt tracker and the AirTag I stuck in the saddle.

cianmm··on Cowboy rides to the rescue of VanMoof owners with app to unlock threatened bikes
This is the sort of marketing that I support. It's providing a service that has a clear value to the user, and is also god-tier trolling, all while getting us to check out their product too (without being pushy about it).

I own a VanMoof and I've got very little faith that this thing is going to last another year - but I hope it does. I really like the bike, and it's sad to have seen the company focusing so heavily on growth to the detriment of quality of their product and service.

cianmm··on Thunderbird 115
Given that 115 is on the left and 102 is on the right (with left generally meaning "old" and right generally meaning "new" when laid out like this), along with 102 IMO looking like a more modern and nicer app, I actually assumed that 102 _was_ the update.
cianmm··on Top suspect in 2015 Ashley Madison hack committed suicide in 2014
What's a submarine piece? I did some searching trying to answer this for myself and can't figure it out.
cianmm··on Second Life by Linden Lab, the company I've worked for since 2004, turn 20 today [video]
If all the people are hiding from new players, how do new people get onboarded into SL without just getting bored and leaving?
cianmm··on UK to crack down on plant-based food and drink labels
A difference might be that your examples are all trademarked words. Milk isn't.

From a marketing perspective saying something is a "milk alternative" or whatever is mostly to market to non-vegans so that they know what to buy if they're looking to get into that area. [Shaky unverifiable source - I know somebody who develops these products for large companies]

cianmm··on The bill of materials for the Apple headset leaked
Is "rear view mirror" a joke, or maybe just a lower res cheaper camera pointing backwards, or maybe this leak isn't legit? Either way, looking forward to seeing the headset!
cianmm··on Into Thin AirPods
This is my takeaway, having had AirPods for several years. I've never once had the Find My feature work as expected, either showing me the location of the AirPods or successfully playing the sound, even as I stand right next to them staring at the case.

Find My works incredibly well for AirTags so I hope that some day they just take an AirTag and stick it inside an AirPods case and call it a day.

cianmm··on The more you save on a flash drive, the lighter it gets?
When I was in college (over a decade ago) I worked in an Apple Store and one of my most memorable stories was trying to help somebody understand that an iPod (Classic I believe) wouldn't get heavier the more albums they stored on it. The customer was clearly not super computer literate, and kept comparing storing albums on an iPod like carrying around tapes or CDs on their Walkman.

They were amazed and delighted when I compared the weight of my iPhone to the weight of one of the store iPods and showed them how much more music was on my iPhone compared to the store iPod.

Teaching people about how technology can improve their lives can really be rewarding.

Of course once they were gone the staff ended up in a debate about the actual technical scientific answer. I don't think we ever came to an agreement on it.

cianmm··on Apple Pay’s long road to paying off is getting shorter
This is correct. Once you authenticate once on Apple Watch (either with PIN or by allowing your phone unlock it once you are wearing it) you can Apple Pay to your heart's content until you next take the watch off.
cianmm··on We ran a phone check at a Y Combinator event in SF
Find my iPhone, when enabled, gives you approval options towards locking down or remotely wiping the phone. It’s not to do with stopping others tracking you.
cianmm··on Improved audio rendering with an optimised version of memcpy (2013)
I can't believe I'm about to defend this, but unless you have an anti-static grinder spraying water does cause a lot less mess and ground coffee flying everywhere. I had to do it with my Wilfa Svart grinder (and still do when I use it) but I don't need to do it for my Niche Zero. When I use my Wilfa Svart without a spray of water (or just a droplet of water stirred in with the handle of a teaspoon) I notice the coffee is a lot messier coming out of the grounds container.

No idea if it impacts taste though.

cianmm··on Europe data salary benchmark 2023
Fair point.
cianmm··on Europe data salary benchmark 2023
While it does let you compare against US salaries, almost all EU countries use the Euro. Certainly all of the ones mentioned in this post do. If you're interested in just a raw number rather than a cost of living weighted number (which this post seems to ignore), converting any stragglers to Euro would have been simplest for European readers.

That said though, as I mentioned, I don't think Europeans are the target market for this.

cianmm··on Europe data salary benchmark 2023
Interesting article, but they don't link to the data, just suggest that you build the dataset yourself with Google. I'm also not seeing mention of cost of living.

> For ease of comparison we’ve converted all numbers to USD ($).

That seems a strange choice, given that this is Europe. The target market for this blog post must not be Europeans.

cianmm··on My coffee maker just makes coffee
Maybe! But the filters are currently under €0.02 per unit on Amazon in a pack of 700 and it makes incredible coffee when paired with pretty much any (non spinny-blade) grinder, and pretty decent coffee when paired with preground. And the inventor says he washes the filters off and uses them two or three times each.
cianmm··on Cybiko
I remember begging my parents for one of these things (Cybiko Xtreme) and absolutely loving it for quite a while - until I started to feel bad that I couldn't do any of the networked stuff since I was probably the only kid on the entire island of Ireland who had one.

edit watching through [this LGR video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38VEBOseAzM) is unlocking some core memories

cianmm··on Apple Books digital narration
You need to take into account that nobody can perfectly read a book first time. I've done a reasonable amount of short-fiction narration for audio magazines, and even with many hours worth of script reading under my belt I still fumble every third or forth sentence. So I need to re-read those, and then I (or somebody else) needs to find those errors and edit them out, replacing with the fixed audio. Then people need to listen to the entire file at least once to ensure the whole thing makes sense and I didn't leave out a sentence somewhere or something.

Audiobook narration is one of those things that is remarkably labour intensive, certainly much more than I'd have guessed before getting into it.
