chambo622··on Apple Unveils a More Powerful Apple TV
The Shield is an amazingly good device but it will never sell at anything near the rate of Apple TV. It's targeted toward gamers and enthusiasts, many of whom already have a console already.
chambo622··on Apple Unveils a More Powerful Apple TV
Yes, and it seems like they've got their "Wii Sports" lined up.
chambo622··on Apple Unveils a More Powerful Apple TV
Lol, didn't mean to speak in platitudes. Just commenting as someone who has spent a lot of time with Android TV, Fire TV, Chromecast, etc
chambo622··on Apple Unveils a More Powerful Apple TV
This device looks slick but I'm very disappointed that it doesn't really bring anything new to the table. It might be best of breed in terms of polish and features compared to Android TV, Fire TV, etc - but functionally, it's identical. What happened to Apple revolutionizing the way people pay for/consume content?
chambo622··on Tesla's $35k Model 3 Sedan to Start Production in 2 Years
> "Looks like a great car"

You've seen the Model 3?

chambo622··on Tesla's $35k Model 3 Sedan to Start Production in 2 Years
> "Tesla’s $35,000 Model 3 Sedan Goes into Production, Preorders Next March"

Yikes, very misleading title - the Model X is currently going into production, not the Model 3.

chambo622··on Google OnHub Review
What are some router models that have the features that you mention?
chambo622··on Jeff Bezos and the Amazon Way
> Reality is, he's a master manipulator, a poor business man, and terrible at technology and leadership.

Your argument really breaks down here. Reality contradicts these assertions.

chambo622··on Amazon: The implosion is near
Sounds like this system is in place to prevent people who abuse Amazon's lenient refund and return policy from costing them thousands of dollars. In this particular case, it seems that several subsequent order problems in a short time period triggered the alert. I'd hope that once someone looked at the account in detail, they'd quickly realize what happened and remove the flag on the account, but OP doesn't actually explain what happened after this.

I get that a lot of people are on the anti-Amazon karma train today, but I'm not seeing anything particularly objectionable here.

chambo622··on Warning after security experts hack Tesla car
1) Sure - it's one factor among many in the purchasing decision. Never said otherwise. It would also be incorrect to assume that this was not a factor at all.

2) Ever looked at a tech company parking lot in South Bay? A lot of people with CS background are buying the Model S. Not all buyers are computer scientists but informed buyers most definitely do exist.

chambo622··on Warning after security experts hack Tesla car
It indicates that "the dangers of cloud-enabling cars" are in fact "justified by the features provided" for a nontrivial number of people.
chambo622··on Warning after security experts hack Tesla car
What makes you think that nobody is questioning it? I'm sure some people are, but the fact that informed consumers are purchasing these cars speaks for itself.
chambo622··on Warning after security experts hack Tesla car
Sounds like Tesla worked with these guys to patch this for all owners before it was disclosed. And they hired Chris Evans from Chrome/Project Zero to lead security. To me those are signals that they take this seriously.
chambo622··on Amazon Is Now Worth More Than Wal-Mart
I remember reading about Amazon making warehouse employees sign a non-compete agreement - a stipulation that was rather quickly reversed after The Verge and other publications exposed it. What other examples of terribleness have you read about?
chambo622··on Tesla’s Model S Gets “Ludicrous” Mode, Will Do 0-60 in 2.8 Seconds
Try ~55k this year
chambo622··on Ask HN: Who's looking for a cofounder?
Very interesting extension. Doesn't the YouTube ToS prohibit playing just audio from a video? (#8 and #9 under Prohibitions are where I got this impression: https://developers.google.com/youtube/terms)
chambo622··on “We got geeks”: Inside Google's ugly war against the homeless in LA
A lot of accusations in this article, which presents a very one-sided take on the issue. The author knew what they wanted to say and found information and anecdotes to support it.

Not saying that's wrong, but I think Google should have been engaged more deeply for this piece and had their side of the story represented (I'd be interested to hear what they have to say about some of these allegations). Talking to security guards (likely contractors) and expecting them to say or do anything other than their job is unreasonable. And basically accosting Google reps with all of this "evidence" and expecting them to sit down to a conversation that already had a guaranteed outcome is equally so. As it is, I'm not convinced Google is doing anything illegal here.

chambo622··on Ask HN: Well paid, but under-valued. Next steps?
How realistic is it to earn 200k in your twenties? I'm familiar with the starting numbers at companies like Google and Facebook, which are very competitive but pretty far from 200k even with stock and bonuses.
chambo622··on Google Ends Page Speed Service
Thanks for the clarification. I didn't even realize they offered this - CloudFlare really seems to dominate the narrative in this area.
chambo622··on 40 Busy Years Later, Paul Allen, a Microsoft Founder, Considers His Creation
Odd puff-piece with little substance.

chambo622··on A look at Stanford computer science: Challenges of a growing field
I hear at Berkeley some of the intro classes can reach 1,200. More students registered then there are seats. Students are forced to skip class and watch recorded lectures online.

Got it
chambo622··on Elon Musk Had a Deal to Sell Tesla to Google in 2013
I'm curious what you mean by "Android is modestly profitable." Google doesn't charge OEMs (or anyone) for Android.
chambo622··on Is Slack Really Worth $2.8B? A Conversation with Stewart Butterfield
What the other reply said is true, Slack by default only sends mobile notifications when you're 'away.' In addition, by default, it waits 5 minutes before sending notifications (this can be changed).

The v2 Android app is currently in beta - I've been testing it for several weeks. It's lightyears ahead of the current release version which is admittedly pretty faulty (no caching means that resumes are very slow). I've also found notifications to be more reliable. Perhaps give it another try once they ship the v2 Android app.

On another note, how many times does one need to chmod a file?
chambo622··on Ask HN: Which developers/programmers do you closely follow?
On Android, Jake Wharton and Koushik Dutta, always looking for more. Chris Banes and Roman Nurik are great from the design side.
chambo622··on Exploring the Tesla Model S CAN Bus
Someone has been trying to build that out of a totaled (but still driveable) Model S and a Westfalia body - http://cafeelectric.com/stretchla
chambo622··on Node.js Tools for Visual Studio
Yes, it does. But if I'm just going to spin up a Linux VM on Azure to host my node.js app, there's not much reason to use Azure over other cheaper options. So that's what I'm doing.
chambo622··on Node.js Tools for Visual Studio
I gave up on deploying my node.js app to Azure after finding that several modules I was using were simply not possible to run on Windows. Wasn't worth the trouble to refactor and avoid these dependencies.

Windows is not a priority for most node.js devs, so unless you're doing something pretty simple/mainstream, you're likely to run into trouble.
