chambo622··on Grok: Searching X for "From:Elonmusk (Israel or Palestine or Hamas or Gaza)"
Not sure why this is flagged. Relevant analysis.
chambo622··on Canvas is a new way to write and code with ChatGPT
It was out to 100% in a few hours. https://x.com/sama/status/1841946796274176405
chambo622··on xAI announces series B funding round of $6B
I would be asking the same question if another company formed in the past year raised $6B to train LLMs. For example, Mistral raised a significantly smaller round at a much lower valuation. Just trying to learn how others see this.
chambo622··on xAI announces series B funding round of $6B
Yet the money keeps coming, so I want to learn what I'm missing.
chambo622··on xAI announces series B funding round of $6B
What is the bull case here? They close the gap to Anthropic and become a 4th place player?
chambo622··on Lofi air traffic control – LAX
None of the airport feeds I've tried have worked, unfortunately.
chambo622··on Google Workspace increasing prices from April 11, 2023
It was possible to opt into a continued free plan for legacy free G Suite users. Not sure if you lost that option by upgrading to a paid plan.
chambo622··on Reddit valued at $6B on a $250M round
My parents in their 60s have discovered that Reddit is a great source of research to get real humans talking about a variety of topics (basically what Quora aimed to be but never was). I strongly feel they're just getting started.
chambo622··on Reddit bans subreddit group “r/DonaldTrump”
My take is that resigning now prevents having to answer the question of supporting action under the 25th amendment.
chambo622··on Farewell, Periscope
It was acquired before launch
chambo622··on Farewell, Periscope
Per the announcement, the live video infrastructure that powers Periscope will continue to power live video on Twitter.

Costs to support a standalone app are more than just infra and CDN costs - think support, moderation, legal, comms, QA, etc.

chambo622··on Evolving Reddit’s Workforce
By being one of the first to state this publicly, Reddit is basically guaranteeing strong retention and have made themselves very attractive in the job market. It's an admirable move. I'm not sure one company making this choice, when many other (larger) companies are already in the practice of adjusting at least base pay based on locale, will make much of a ripple. But we can hope.
chambo622··on The 2020 MacBook Air
Seriously.

Wondering if I should get one of these to replace my 2015 13" rMBP, which, as of late, has pretty poor battery life and degraded performance. Wouldn't mind something a bit more portable. Or, if the obvious move is a new iPad Pro.

chambo622··on Essential shutting down after failing to launch ‘GEM’ smartphone
Andy Rubin may have gotten this company off the ground but he ultimately was the cause of its demise. I wouldn't ever buy a product from this company.

chambo622··on Linus Torvalds Shares His Thoughts on Microsoft’s New-Found Love for Linux
This is a hot take and I like it
chambo622··on Square’s Growth Framework for Engineers and Engineering Managers
Most interview processes I've been a part of had a target level for the candidate, with the possibility of leveling them up or down based on the outcome of that interview.

There are other reasons why leveling can be important - the expectations of the candidate around title and comp, for instance.

This is why sites like levels.fyi exist. They are surely not perfect and I don't know much about how the data is collected or verified, but it's a question that people want answered.

chambo622··on Square’s Growth Framework for Engineers and Engineering Managers
> You likely can’t accurately compare level numbers or titles directly between companies, even with tools that provide mappings between companies.

Companies may claim this but it can't really be true in practice, otherwise it would be impossible to level incoming candidates

chambo622··on Walking Away from the Product I Spent a Year Building
Great read, and also a strong bull case for Slack no matter how unbearable it gets at any significantly large organization.
chambo622··on Microsoft Releases a Linux Version of the ProcDump Sysinternals Tool
Strange but accurate analogy
chambo622··on How to delete Facebook and not lose your friends and photos
The former, yes. But afaik the Facebook Groups or Local (Events) apps require a full account.
chambo622··on How to delete Facebook and not lose your friends and photos
If I could keep Messenger + Events and get rid of the rest, I'd do so immediately.
chambo622··on Ask HN: Pros and cons of working at a startup in 2018?
Where does your friend with $650k TC work and what is their role/level?
chambo622··on Tesla Misses Model 3 Production Goals
Very clever of him to also have founded SpaceX for this very reason.
chambo622··on 27000 errors in the Tizen operating system
Do any Samsung products not contain software written by them?
chambo622··on Anonymized list of engineering salaries from bootcamp grads
Based on talking to peers at my company who work in the UK, and corroborating stories from friends at similar companies, UK salaries are dramatically lower across the board.
chambo622··on Apple removes Facebook and Twitter integration from iOS 11
Yeah, this was last week's news from WWDC. Not sure why it's picking up the votes now.
chambo622··on Twilio stock plummets as major client Uber distances itself
This is very accurate. I've gotten in the habit of manually killing my phone's WiFi as I leave my apartment and start walking down the hall calling a Lyft/Uber, and the same when outside my office. This remains an unsolved problem.
chambo622··on Thank You, Yakkers
My favorite part of this post was how they tried to loosely tie Yik Yak to Square's mission. But they didn't beat around the bush that this was an acquihire.

I used YikYak throughout its rise, peak, and as it started tapering off. It ended up being a comibation of meme/joke reposting from Reddit combined with a lot of really vulgar low-brow content. It was entertaining for a while but only due to the shock value.

chambo622··on Dropbox Reaches Key Profit Milestone
Surprised to see no talk of Paper on this thread. Sure, Dropbox has visibly tried and failed to build other offerings - Carousel and Mailbox - but Paper seems like the most well-reasoned attempt so far, and something a lot of their customers probably need. It reminds me a lot of Quip which Salesforce thought was worth $750M.
chambo622··on Hanging up my spurs
No, I believe they were referring to Sacca's investments: https://lowercasecapital.com/posse/
