cfjgvjh··on Version Control for Everything
I really really want to do version control for everything, but most of my data is binary so it really doesn't agree with git; I tried using LFS as well but it didn't work for my specific workflow. Hopefully something less text oriented comes along in the future.

Lore looked interesting for this purpose. https://github.com/EpicGames/lore

cfjgvjh··on Firefox Is the Superior Browser
I know the author is talking about the mobile experience, so a bit of a tangent but

Multi account containers, especially with temporary containers improved my web experience so much that I don’t think I could ever go back.

It’s so much more fluid than profiles.

cfjgvjh··on iPhone 15’s shift to USB-C
Native Apple support of the MacOS on the iPad would be really cool, though I suppose it'd never happen considering just how awful the mouse on iPad experience is. It's astonishing compared to how just about everyone loves the trackpad feel on MacOS.

It just makes me sad that I have so much computing power in such a small form factor, and software just gimps it, both in capability and experience.

cfjgvjh··on TikTok Shop
China in general seems to really like the concept of superapps, so it coming out into the physical domain seems like the next logical step.
cfjgvjh··on Neopets is still around
I suppose unregulated markets will inevitably attract opportunistic scams.
cfjgvjh··on I've started using Firefox and can never go back to Chrome
The tool is already out and works pretty okay for the supported languages. (At least enough for me to find the page I'm looking for.)

Bonus points for it being offline.

cfjgvjh··on Open-source home cloud OS allows you to run Docker applications without coding
Discord search is a terrible piece of shit, I agree. The real value is the realtime support offered. It should never be a knowledge storage, that's a job for a wiki.
cfjgvjh··on Open-source home cloud OS allows you to run Docker applications without coding
I get what you're saying, but since Discord is often used for technical/community support, it probably is a low-friction way for people new to the homeserver stuff to get help and learn more. I know many of my normie friends would never use IRC, even if it was E2E encrypted and kept no logs.
cfjgvjh··on 90% of Black Friday deals were the same price or cheaper six months before
That only works if the use of that time towards a more productive activity actually pays off in that short duration; sometimes comparing shops and making sure you're getting the best is the most fun part, so there's some utility derived from there as well. At least for myself, I only really deal-hunt during Black Friday and anytime else I get what I need when I need them.
cfjgvjh··on Batteries included with Emacs (2020)
As someone that has always wanted to try stock emacs, this kind of a breakdown is appreciated. I know the individual systems aren't all that complex but when you're new to almost all of them it gets overwhelming quickly.
cfjgvjh··on I Miss the Old Internet (2019)
It's even worse when it's some corpo blog advertising their shitty product.
cfjgvjh··on iPhone Macro: A Big Day for Small Things
That's because the original micro lenses were commissioned to resolve images of microfilms iirc[1] (See under 1962), and doesn't really have anything to do with the macro/micro relationship.

cfjgvjh··on Hugo Themes ranked by GitHub Stars
For some reason I'm unable to load more when I click on the button. Tried both FF and Edge.
cfjgvjh··on Footnotes now supported in GitHub Markdown
I would love that but then again org-noter and pdftools compliment base org-mode nicely.
cfjgvjh··on Footnotes now supported in GitHub Markdown
If only I could have it in any other way than emacs...
cfjgvjh··on Hello, Chase bank? snyksec accidentally sent us $10M
At this point internet trolling and shitposting has gone so far so I have trouble making that distinction in general.
cfjgvjh··on What ever happened to E INK Keyboards?
Even if it were doable at scale without being a scam, it just doesn't seem worth the potential to compromise on typing experience since I don't think it'd be possible to use mechanical switches.

I guess purchasing a Elgato Stream Deck gets you pretty close, though in a macropad format.

cfjgvjh··on OECD Releases “Education at a Glance 2021”
I get what you're trying to say but OECD isn't exactly an obscure organization, it's as common as NATO, UNICEF, or IMF.

I wouldn't be surprised if more people knew of the OECD than IEEE.

cfjgvjh··on TikTok overtakes Facebook as most downloaded app
That's really the way to do it. Most of the important info ends up on the sub, while daily shitposts and friendly convos take place on Discord.
cfjgvjh··on Ask HN: What would you choose today as your note taking device and app
This is purely a want and not anything realistic, but

I'd love a device with a reflective LCD screen since I find that my eyes hurt after staring at bright screens for so long. Ideally it would be color, giving it a distinct advantage over eink. TCL NXTpaper looks very interesting for this reason.

As for apps, I'd be happy if it ran Obsidian, Sublime, Scrivener, and Office (or really anything powerful enough to let me write my papers with proper Japanese support and do code snippet highlighting).

Having a pen input might be nice for diagrams and mindmapping.

I guess I really just want a reflective iPad.

cfjgvjh··on Facebook's “see no evil” strategy
> but good, evidence based information is also now easier than ever to find.

This assumption does not really work when "the echo chamber" of algorithmic curation and optimization for attention does not expose you to ideas outside of your bubble. It's also true that access to evidence based research, say in open journals, is now easier than ever; that doesn't mean I have enough knowledge to properly understand their implications. That significantly limits the permeability of good, solid information compared to garbage.

It's not at all related to the topic at hand, but Japan recently liberalized their power plan so that consumers can choose who generates the power; a study on Japanese public perception of energy liberalization[0] found that over 30% of these that did not consider power plan switching and over 20% that seriously considered it decided to not go through with the provider switch because they couldn't find enough information or had a hard time understanding. It's just a singular data point, but I think the actual hurdle to absorbing the information as opposed to accessing it is a lot higher.

Things like COVID safety or the shape of the Earth is far more personal and complex (once you go down to quality, evidence based information) than power plans, and they lack the financial incentive that switching power plans have. What makes you think that these people in a bubble would venture out to find quality information or listen to an outsider pointing out just how wrong they are?

Unlike the GP, I'm not personally in favor of censorship, as you say, the freedom of expression and information has far too much benefit to restrict mindlessly. Rather, I want to go back to the pre-"algorithm" days where quality content was spread via word of mouth and not through some engagement metric.

[0] 10.1016/j.erss.2017.09.026 - It's just something tangentially related that I've read recently.

cfjgvjh··on Valve Steam Deck
I don't even know how to actually check what I have on my Epic account without going to past purchases. It's baffling how a company that's trying to take more marketshare from a platform as polished as Steam without focusing more on UX.
cfjgvjh··on Facebook's “see no evil” strategy
For one, now mistruths can be made much more quickly than truths - hello GPT-3 - and can be delivered in a far more convincing way than any other time. I have a hard time telling AI generated video apart sometimes, which will only improve as time goes on.

Nor was there an existence of platforms that not only enable but encourage the creation of echo chambers that reinforce preexisting views and actively attempt to intervene for our attention. There is no practical limit to mistruth "content" that can be made, whereas proper information takes time and effort; I think we're nearing a point where genuine information will simply be crowded out and buried.

cfjgvjh··on Elon Musk's SpaceX to pollute the sky view with ads
Honestly, I didn't really expect much from a site that literally has the words "hype" and "beast" in it.
cfjgvjh··on Engineer Makes an AI Camera Sprinkler to Keep People Off His Lawn
The creator had a thread on the raspberry pi subreddit.

cfjgvjh··on Ask HN: What features would improve video chat/meeting software
Prioritize audio data over video. I have issues in zoom when someone has slow connection where the video lags and the audio gets really garbled, making it impossible to communicate. If instead it just killed the video feed based on connection health, I'd at least be able to talk.

I'd also like a user mute button in general as a non-host. Some people have really bad microphone setup despite being year-in into the pandemic and remote stuff.

cfjgvjh··on Facebook users said no to tracking, and now advertisers are panicking
> If widely circulated, this could be wielded to some effect in a campaign by FB detractors/rivals.

But who are the FB ads rivals that aren't affected in a similar manner by this change? Since the tracking permission isn't specific to FB, wouldn't other players with a similar business model also be negatively impacted?

cfjgvjh··on High-resolution holographic interface [video]
Linus Tech Tips covered them before that gives a pretty good overview [0]. It's a really cool tech and I hope it becomes more affordable in the future. I'd imagine actually feeling like a person is physically present will make Zoom meetings and such a lot less boring.

cfjgvjh··on Of 55 students in my class at Columbia’s Film program, 4 made a career out of it
From my experience, athletes who were really good at the sport wasn't the greatest teacher; since they kind of intuitively understood how they should conduct their body to do something, they had a real tough time trying to transfer that knowledge to me who has no idea how I should move my body. They often tried to use imaginary that didn't really connect with me. It was far better to be taught by someone who was good but wasn't a natural as a beginner since they seemed to have a better grasp on what kind of struggles normal people had.

Obviously this is just anecdotal and probably changes at the Olympics levels and other places where the learner competency and affinity is already high.

cfjgvjh··on Zoom Immersive View to Bring Participants Together in a Virtual Room
Visual immersion is cool, but can these platforms do something about audio? Depending on what people use, the quality and the loudness is all over the place. Yeah, I could feed Zoom audio into a DAW, but that seems overkill.
