century19··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
Russia being part of Europe is a fact and not a preference. It seems like you want to see Europe as being united against Russia instead of this being an internal European conflict, which it is.
century19··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
Russians are Europeans.
century19··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
I think that is right and with the way Ukraine and Iran is going, we will need smaller decentralised data centres etc too. Its coming from a sad, bad place but it may be better and more democratic, less centralised.
century19··on In the UK, EVs are cheaper than petrol cars, thanks to Chinese competition
I think mostly like Tesla in the EU. And warranties are long, like 10 years.
century19··on In the UK, EVs are cheaper than petrol cars, thanks to Chinese competition
So no free market. Consumers have to subsidise crap companies.
century19··on In the UK, EVs are cheaper than petrol cars, thanks to Chinese competition
Vehicles have road taxes. It’s a very clumbsy and annoying way the UK have planned this new tax. I hope other countries do not copy it.
century19··on A proposed amendment to ban under 16s in the UK from common online services
It’s not about Andrew Tate, it’s about Gaza.
century19··on The warning signs the AI bubble is about to burst
Maybe it is 2000 in your analogy.
century19··on Claude says “You're absolutely right!” about everything
Yes and I’ve seen this at work. People saying I asked the LLM and it said I was right. Of course it did. It rarely doesn’t.
century19··on Reviving a Modular Cargo Bike Design from the 1930s
Bakfiets no? That’s what the Dutch call it and they use them widely. Especially the electric versions you can get nowadays.
century19··on How long does it take to create a new habit? (2015)
People that I have seen substitute with vaping seem to get more addicted to that.
century19··on Twitter.com – Is Twitter Down?
I don’t think you are the hero in this story. Pretty terrible behavior.
century19··on It is no longer safe to move our governments and societies to US clouds
I have interviewed Turkish people that did not have Cloud experience as their large companies (e.g. banks) were not allowed to use US cloud services. Seems like that was wise now.
century19··on It is no longer safe to move our governments and societies to US clouds
I've worked with many and it was always Windows, with some use of MacBooks in recent years. Never once seen Linux desktops.
century19··on Tech jobs have dried up
Don't worry. There is plenty to be done. These stories come up every few years. Previously it was outsourcing to India, or low-code tooling, etc. AI can make you more productive but there will still be plenty of jobs.
century19··on X permanently stops Grok AI from using EU citizens' tweets – Irish court action
How come Stack Overflow posts are fair game for AI without user permission?
century19··on UK chip giant ARM developing GPU in Israel
Intel cancelled a 25 billion site in Israel. The future of multi national companies in Israel does not look bright. This feels like a propaganda piece.
century19··on Why Steve Jobs Went 'Thermonuclear' over Android (2014)
Jobs famously muscled his way in and took their ideas, albeit from a dumb board.

Famous story:

Steve Jobs confronted Bill Gates after he announced Windows' GUI OS. "You’re stealing from us!” Bill replied "I think it's more like we both had this rich neighbor named Xerox and I broke into his house to steal the TV set and found out that you had already stolen it."

century19··on 20 Years of Gmail
You don’t consider Maps a Google product? I guess there was some tech acquisition part there.
century19··on Engineer bought prison laptop and 1,200 incarcerated folks lost their devices
Folk is as old as folk. As Lou Reed said when asked about folk music he said, “let me tell you about folk music, the folk are listening to rock and roll”.
century19··on As Nepali villages modernize, mokha art is on the verge of disappearing
Checkout this map of outdoor art in Amsterdam.

A lot of them are small adornments to housing, one large area of which (Apollobuurt) was built as social housing 100 years ago.

century19··on The 1988 shooting down of Flight 655 as a user interface disaster
If I remember correctly, the Lockerbie / Pan Am attack was in response to this.
century19··on We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO
Exactly this. It also moved Microsoft’s share price. Is that not questionable practice?
century19··on Restaurant in Georgia charging customers a fee for 'bad parenting'
I’ve heard the same about crèches in The Netherlands.
century19··on Booking.com customers targeted by scam 'confirmation' emails
In the example it was something like:

https://booking.id123456.info/

As someone once said, the fact many companies use different domains for their overall service has added to the confusion for users.

century19··on Ask HN: In person industry tours and site visits?
What age range was this? Do you have the name of the camp. Sounds like a great idea.
century19··on Is ChatGPT a Bit Unsporting?
AlphaZero was pretty huge news. I’ve seen videos on YouTube of its play being analysed and wowing chess players.
century19··on When did people stop being drunk all the time?
The OP said the Chinese did some good things but nothing like the special Europeans. It was clearly a race discussion.
century19··on When did people stop being drunk all the time?
Like I said, I called it out in its tracks and gave them the chance to correct if there was a misunderstanding.
century19··on When did people stop being drunk all the time?
White supremacy is basically this, "we are special". Needs to be called out in its tracks. They don't have to explain, but they can expect push back like I gave and can easily clarify if I was misinterpreting, which they chose not to.
