captaincrunch··on Anvilytics.com – Dependabot and CVE Management Platform
We're using this for our multiple repository/CVE reporting. It's ok, we were paying Snyk.io $25k essentially for the same thing.
captaincrunch··on Satoshi – Sirius emails 2009-2011
As a Canadian who was raised on British English, I seamlessly switch between British and American English when interacting with clients from the US, England, and Canada. This flexibility in language is quite natural to me. Furthermore, for someone who meticulously conceals their identity, adapting in such a manner would likely be effortless and unremarkable.

Cheerio, Later, Take care eh?

captaincrunch··on In 1950, a U.S. troop plane vanished without a trace in the Yukon
Sometimes I like to think that this plane was landed in anyone of the 10's of airfields around Snag and the men were the first batch for the MKUltra Project, which started in the early 1950s and officially sanctioned in 1953. It involved illegal activities, including the use of U.S. and Canadian citizens as unwitting test subjects, aiming to develop techniques and substances for use in interrogations and warfare
captaincrunch··on PoisonGPT: We hid a lobotomized LLM on Hugging Face to spread fake news
I don't think I'd like to see someone do something equal in the pharmaceutical industry.
captaincrunch··on P1030680: Unbroken Enigma message (U534, 01 May 1945)
It would still take many orders of magnitude longer than the current age of the universe to brute-force decrypt an Enigma message on todays fastest desktop.
captaincrunch··on Ask HN: Anyone have a going Live Checklist?
ty!!
captaincrunch··on Wobbly clock
Unsure why, but this actually stresses me out. Never had anything trigger me like this (serious post).
captaincrunch··on Ask HN: How to deal with regret of not having kids
The best time to have a child is when you're 20, the second best time is now.
captaincrunch··on Ask HN: What'd be possible with 1000x faster CPUs?
Likely we would see 8192 keys for SSH
captaincrunch··on Ask HN: I want to do so many things... How to pick one path and focus on it?
I have the same issue, looking forward to some responses.
captaincrunch··on Ask HN: How do you try an open source app on macOS that you do not trust?
Other than read the source code line-by-line, install it and cross your fingers. Why would you put something you don't trust on your phone?
captaincrunch··on Show HN: Rocket Drone, a lunar lander type game for the web
Make P=Q, and Q=P (swap the keys)
captaincrunch··on Show HN: Rocket Drone, a lunar lander type game for the web
After trying this for 30 minutes and not landing... I noticed the .lol domain extension.

I hate you

captaincrunch··on Show HN: Rocket Drone, a lunar lander type game for the web
I want to swap P&Q doesn't feel natural. This is hard as hell :D
captaincrunch··on Instagram can track anything you do on any website in their in-app browser
I generally assume that if I am using a browser IN ANOTHER APP, its tracking it - or could. Not hard to do
captaincrunch··on Thoughts on the potato diet
Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that potatoes gave you every vitamin and mineral you needed (except b12 which you can get from butter).
captaincrunch··on You block ads in your browser, why not in your city?
because I can't.
captaincrunch··on BusKill – A USB kill cord for laptops
Anyone needing a Yubikey would be very lucky to see them just hanging out of a computer, would just a bonus for the evil actor to also ruin your day and pull it out.
captaincrunch··on BusKill – A USB kill cord for laptops
What would stop someone from crazy gluing the easy release cable, shaving the wire back and connecting power to the usb before removing it?
captaincrunch··on ‘Trojan Source’ Bug Threatens the Security of All Code
from the article, its likely you'd not even notice - unless you pasted in an ascii only editor that doesn't allow anything other than plain old text.
captaincrunch··on 'Google' is most searched word on Bing
I gave Bing an honest try, and I wanted it to work for me... but it is just horrible at finding what I am looking for.
captaincrunch··on Ask HN: Please critique my InfoSec consulting page

captaincrunch··on Why cancer cells waste so much energy
No medical experience, other than as a patient... however I read the body can live up to two months without food (but with adequate water). If you managed to survive longer than the cancer cells, wouldn't they just come back after defeat? Doesn't this stem from DNA?
captaincrunch··on Why Bitcoin Could Be Banned or Criminalized in the Coming Years
I was not aware we were in a Depression.
captaincrunch··on Ask HN: Would a personal HSM be of interest?
Forgot to mention the SD card is encrypted using luks.
captaincrunch··on Ask HN: Would a personal HSM be of interest?
I haven't thought about pricing, but I'd like to keep it affordable.

I think it is way more feature rich than the YubiHSM, its about the size of a pack of cigarettes (not as small as the yubi).

Currently the interface between the host and hsm is an API. I'm working on a PKCS11 interface now, and have been messing with a very basic implementation of it.

captaincrunch··on Ask HN: Would a personal HSM be of interest?
I haven't thought of pricing, but I'd like to keep it affordable. The hardware module can be configured to permanently bond to the raspberry pi - meaning once the raspberry pi dies, the module is useless (proper HSM).

If not configured to bond, it would be less secure, but depends on what the person wants I guess. Making it bond to the raspberry pi requires that I physically modify the module before I send it out.

The module will run off the replaceable battery and also protects itself from power fluctuations/brownouts, etc. (it slides in whenever needing to be replaced) - and estimate that it will last about 3 years before needing to be replaced.

captaincrunch··on Ask HN: How do you brew your coffee?
OMG NOT TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED? OH MA GOD!
captaincrunch··on Ask HN: How do you brew your coffee?
Carefully crack a can of Monster open ensuring that none of the factory air escapes in a temperature controlled environment, usually 1:1 ratio. Drink it in about 5 minutes.
captaincrunch··on Segwit2x Bitcoin Fork Suspended
[Bitcoin-segwit2x] Segwit2x Final Steps

Mike Belshe mike at bitgo.com Wed Nov 8 16:58:41 UTC 2017 Previous message: [Bitcoin-segwit2x] Require a new Statement from NYA companies Next message: [Bitcoin-segwit2x] Segwit2x Final Steps Messages sorted by: [ date ] [ thread ] [ subject ] [ author ] The Segwit2x effort began in May with a simple purpose: to increase the blocksize and improve Bitcoin scalability. At the time, the Bitcoin community was in crisis after nearly 3 years of heavy debate, and consensus for Segwit seemed like a distant mirage with only 30% support among miners. Segwit2x found its first success in August, as it broke the deadlock and quickly led to Segwit’s successful activation. Since that time, the team shifted its efforts to phase two of the project - a 2MB blocksize increase.

Our goal has always been a smooth upgrade for Bitcoin. Although we strongly believe in the need for a larger blocksize, there is something we believe is even more important: keeping the community together. Unfortunately, it is clear that we have not built sufficient consensus for a clean blocksize upgrade at this time. Continuing on the current path could divide the community and be a setback to Bitcoin’s growth. This was never the goal of Segwit2x.

As fees rise on the blockchain, we believe it will eventually become obvious that on-chain capacity increases are necessary. When that happens, we hope the community will come together and find a solution, possibly with a blocksize increase. Until then, we are suspending our plans for the upcoming 2MB upgrade.

We want to thank everyone that contributed constructively to Segwit2x, whether you were in favor or against. Your efforts are what makes Bitcoin great. Bitcoin remains the greatest form of money mankind has ever seen, and we remain dedicated to protecting and fostering its growth worldwide.
