captaincrunch··on MoonBASIC: A modern BASIC for building 2D and 3D games
I used to love posts like this. I even wrote my own basic runtime environment back in the day. But lately, because of AI, I've completely lost interest in this kind of stuff.

I don't say that lightly. I've been coding since I was 11 and loved every minute of it. I'm 52 now, and once I fully gave in to using AI, I pretty much stopped writing code myself.

Has anyone else felt like they've lost that spark?

So far its been direct referrals, which was surprising. I did an initial post on Reddit, and its grown quite a lot since!!

I struggled with an input box for the first month on my game, Apple and its crazy UI/UX. I think you made the right choice with the keyboard.

Just sitting at 99,736 plays since March!!

I recently did the same (made a daily game) and I am approaching 100k plays since March. https://plot-hole.com - the best thing so far about this app has been the analytics which you can check out here: https://plot-hole.com/daily-analytics-82u4fhrvw

Wrote a game, and played with Google Analytics, and a few others - I have to say how disapointed I was with google = used to be easy to use, now its just so frustrating and the stats make no sense to me.

Anyhow, whipped this up and I am actually benefitting from the stats - game changes, etc.

captaincrunch··on If AI writes your code, why use Python?
You could answer this by asking yourself - Why not just let AI code in machine language?
captaincrunch··on Show HN: Plot-Hole.com a daily movie puzzle I made
I am capable of coding (25 years+) but just started playing with Claude Code, its actually pretty good. I have all the data in the DB (AI generated data)

Would love feedback, we used AI for the answers so we could enjoy it too! :D

captaincrunch··on A leap year check in three instructions
just a formatting issue on my side, there were \n.
captaincrunch··on A leap year check in three instructions
This is fast, READABLE, and accurate:

bool is_leap_year(uint32_t y) { // Works for Gregorian years in range [0, 65535] return ((!(y & 3)) && ((y % 25 != 0) || !(y & 15))); }

captaincrunch··on Ask HN: Should I Price It
Keep it in the single digits, most people when looking over their Credit cards (when looking to cut things) look for big numbers.

Officer Cleo: chuckles Well Sheerluck, since you're stuck at home, I'm happy to whip up a little JavaScript program to help us crack this case wide open! Let's get coding, shall we? ```javascript // Function to display the overview of the case function displayOverview() { console.log("Welcome to the Andae Mountain Cabin mystery!"); console.log("We've got two dead bodies on our hands - one fresh, one old."); console.log("The fresh one is Victim Vince, who was stabbed with a broken antler."); console.log("The old one is Marcel, a famous fashion designer who went missing 15 years ago."); console.log("The suspects are a colorful bunch:"); console.log("- Violent Jerry, the angry cabin owner"); console.log("- Manager Patricia, his young, controlling wife"); console.log("- Solitary Hannah, the intense, silent hunter"); console.log("- Innocent Ken, the smelly anime nerd"); console.log("- Amateur Larry, the bumbling businessman with some shady connections"); console.log("We've got a lot of ground to cover, so let's get investigating!"); } // Function to display the key locations to investigate function displayLocations() { console.log("Here are the key locations we need to check out:"); console.log("- Andae Woods"); console.log("- Area behind the cabin"); console.log("- Cabin lobby"); console.log("- Room 101 (Violent Jerry and Manager Patricia)"); console.log("- Room 102 (Amateur Larry)"); console.log("- Room 103 (Solitary Hannah)"); console.log("- Room 201 (Victim Vince)"); console.log("- Room 202 (Innocent Ken)"); console.log("Remember, each suspect has dirt on the others, so we need to grill them all to get the full picture."); } // Function to display clues found in a specific location function displayCluesFromLocation(location) { switch (location) { case "Room 101":

captaincrunch··on Turn Your iPhone into a Dumb Phone
How does my grandfather exist in this complicated world? You don't need a smart phone.
captaincrunch··on Turn Your iPhone into a Dumb Phone
If you have a problem with attention, just buy a flip phone, they still exist.

I tried this for about 10 minutes, and went back to 4. Not really that great for what I am doing.

The input handling for file names is shit -- the GETWORD and MUSTGETWORD routines, doesn't check if the file name (or) extension exceeds the length (8 characters for the filename and 3 for the extension).

captaincrunch··on Ask HN: Have you migrated to Proton mail/calendar/pass/etc.? How was it?
I am actually moving from Proton to iCloud. I find using the bridge and custom iPhone app a bit of a pain in the ass. Not to mention, once the emails are in there, you have to figure out how to get them back out.

The security was good, but I find it more practical to just use iCloud. The VPN was nice, but for everything else - I have 1Password, etc..

Look into the lock-in, I was able to sync my mail out over several days using the bridge but some people have had issues getting their email back.
