brandoncor··on Blame Rich, Overeducated Elites as Our Society Frays
This is a much better argument. Do you happen to have a source for his using Cayman Island and Switzerland offshore accounts?

Edit: http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/2012/08/investigating-mit...

brandoncor··on Blame Rich, Overeducated Elites as Our Society Frays
Can you explain this a bit further? I'm not a fan of Mitt Romney, but I've never understood the outrage at his tax returns. It was my understanding that the low tax rate was due to 1) donations and 2) the fact that most of his income comes from capital gains. Do you think people considering running for president should go out of their way to pay more taxes?

Can someone explain why Motorola Mobility wouldn't take over manufacturing Nexus devices?

brandoncor··on How we fixed the iOS7 forced logout bug that's been affecting so many apps
Oh man. I seriously love you. I've been trying to find a fix for this for about two years now.

My app sometimes launches from the background after the user enters or leaves a region. It looks for a session token (not a password) in the Keychain and would return nil and log the user out. I'm not sure how I never came across kSecAttrAccessibleAlwaysThisDeviceOnly in all my hours trying to find a solution.

By the way, this isn't specific to iOS 7. I've had the same issue since iOS 5.

brandoncor··on Pakistan quake island off Gwadar 'emits flammable gas'
I really wonder what it looked like as it happened - if it was instantaneous or if it was gradual, was there a cloud of steam, etc.

brandoncor··on Google Acquires Makani Power And Its Airborne Wind Turbines
For those that have a subscription, The New Yorker did an interesting profile of Makani in the 5/20 issue:

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2013/05/20/130520fa_fact_...

Apparently Montague was actually seeking funding to create a kite-boat (he had previously help establish kite-boarding), but it was Larry and Sergey's idea to go down the wind energy route.

brandoncor··on Ask HN: Where are you storing your passwords?
Did you find out who cracked it? And how did you find out? Just curious if you were targeted specifically.
brandoncor··on The Simple Math Behind Early Retirement
Why is it absurd? The former is completely based on a combination of income and lifestyle, so I can't argue with that.

However, the latter is just math. According to the article, if you save 50% and maintain your current lifestyle, assuming a 4% withdrawal rate, you'll be financially independent.

brandoncor··on My Top Sublime Text 2 Plugins
Same thing happened to me. I had no choice but to re-enable it since I didn't want to reinstall Sublime Text itself.
brandoncor··on Gitrep - Discover and organize Github repositories
Funny, I owned this domain until July of this year and was planning to build the exact same thing. I was in my "have an idea, get excited, buy the domain, do nothing, let it expire" phase.

Glad to see you picked it up and actually built and launched.

brandoncor··on John McAfee arrested in Guatemala
John was interviewed on the Joe Rogan podcast on Nov. 27 when he was still on the run: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GmwSgCfn38. It's worth a listen if you want to hear his side of the story (though it's quite cringeworthy).

It starts at about 18:40.

brandoncor··on BMW Invests in Embark (YC S11)
These apps are great. Does anyone know how they plan to make money in the future? Just start charging for the apps once they're ranked #1 in each city?
brandoncor··on Mapping Racist Tweets in Response to President Obama's Re-election
First of all, how do you filter by "black people" on Twitter? Second, the authors were probably grabbing all tweets that contained certain racial epithets. The word "riot" isn't racist.
brandoncor··on Forget self improvement
The author actually agrees with you to a certain extent: "Well, it is a big deal. And in spite of how effortless these accomplishments may appear, people work harder than you likely realize to make these things happen." He or she isn't denying that there's an element of self-discipline and pain in achieving your goals, actually the opposite.

I think the author is asking us to take a step back and really consider why we have these aspirations. Is it only for status? If so, we're already at a disadvantage because there are people out there who enjoy the grind for that goal more than us.

For me, the trick is finding the goal that has the highest ROI and the least grind/friction. There is always going to be a certain amount of pain and discomfort in pursuing any goal, but it doesn't hurt to try to minimize it.

brandoncor··on This is a bit f'd, Quora
I don't believe that's true. I see a "Deactivate" button in my settings. Or is that not the same thing as "deleting"?
brandoncor··on This is a bit f'd, Quora
Yes, but the default is on. I didn't know that until I saw this post 5 minutes ago. Now I'm thinking of deactivating my Quora account.
brandoncor··on The Oatmeal fights back, snaps photo of cash, sends money to charity
This quotation is particularly scary:

"It's not the first time we've been targeted as sacrificial victims," Tara wrote. "We were targeted by the entire Buddhist community when I told them to go fuck themselves, for being nihilists, elitists, and authoritarians."

brandoncor··on Outsource Things You Don't Care About
Using his language, I think he'd say you "don't care about" figuring out the intricacies of e-mail deliverability. It seems like "don't care" was just a poor choice of wording. A better metric would be just to ask what your core competency is, which is the actual content of the newsletter, not the technology involved with running a newsletter.
brandoncor··on The One Product That Makes Apple a Trillion-Dollar Company Overnight

brandoncor··on Ask HN: I'm a Developer, I make good money, Where do I put it?
I wrestled with the ETF vs. Index mutual fund debate too, but I realized that pretty much each Vanguard ETF has an index fund equivalent with the same expense ratio if you invest at least $10,000 to get Admiral Shares. For example, VFINX: https://personal.vanguard.com/us/FundsSnapshot?FundId=0040&#....

At this point, there are only two differences between the two: 1) You can't day trade index funds 2) You can't auto invest in ETFs

Auto investing was really important to me for dollar cost averaging, so I decided to go with index funds rather than ETFs in the end.

By the way, Vanguard does have index funds for REITs: https://personal.vanguard.com/us/funds/snapshot?FundId=0123&...

brandoncor··on At the End of a Procrastinated Day
Reading that was pretty eery since I just ate a banana, got a glass of water from the kitchen, have Chrome open with 20 tabs (including, obviously, Hacker News) and have a Pomodoro Android app within reach. The only thing that snapped me out of it was that my app was free.
brandoncor··on My product is outlawed... What next?
I was also wondering why he or she was reluctant to do this. Maybe the decks are already printed? If not, I don't think toning down the name and the marketing would take too much from the essence of the product.
brandoncor··on Choosing the right sleep schedule to maximize time and keep you healthy
"a health problem is also a potentially catastrophic financial problem", which is why this guy should probably stop focusing on his sleep schedule and do everything he can to get some coverage (probably easier said than done; I've never been in this position). A perfect sleep schedule won't help much if he steps out of his apartment and gets hit by a car.
brandoncor··on Jewish problems
What you describe seems to be the same thing that's happening to Asian Americans today: http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/oped/art.... Though there might not be specific quotas, there is a feeling that certain universities are "more Asian" than others, Johns Hopkins being one of them.
brandoncor··on From “To Do” to “Will Do”: Using the Case Method to Defeat Procrastination
Though the reasons he recommends emulating a role model aren't that obvious. It's a hack to beat procrastination by making you more confident in your plan. Since the same plan was used successfully by someone else, you're more likely to stick with it. It seems like the quality of the plan isn't what matters, but that it actually worked at least once. A plan you've come up with on your own is unproven, so is more susceptible to procrastination.
