bondant··on Americans are drowning in spam
In France people put a sticker on the mailbox which says "Pas de publicité, merci" (No advertisement, thanks). It really decreased the number of ads I have received (although I still receive one from time to time). Maybe you could try something similar.
bondant··on Tell HN: If I see an “accept cookies” on a website, I close it immediately
>sometimes taking up half the real estate on mobile screen

On my Iphone SE the banner frequently fill the whole screen and it's difficult to click consent or reject and even worse sometimes it is even impossible to click on any of those consent or reject buttons.

bondant··on Things you don't need JavaScript for
I think he would rather have a checkbox to disable dark mode in case a specific website. So he don't have to switch his system-wide preference in order to browse a single badly designed website.
bondant··on The Nintendo Switch has now outsold the Wii
Not sure this is the exact kind of books you are looking for but here are some recommendations:

-For a whole picture of the Nintendo business since the beginning (1889), I would recommend the books "L'Histoire de Nintendo" from Florent Gorges. The books are in french but there are English translations of the first two.

-For product design I like the "Reverse Design" books from Patrick Holleman. As the title imply it's not from the creator of the analyzed game but I think the books contains good analyzed of how different gameplay elements works together.

bondant··on BitTorrent v2 (2020)
I'm surprised nobody has build a torrent catalog on bittorrent itself. I think that with the DHT mutable item one should be able to publish a torrent containing a list of torrent with comments and updating the list easily.
bondant··on I went back to using a ThinkPad from 2012
I'm still using my W510 from 2010 every day. Since most of my work is done on remote computer I don't need much power anyway. I have only updated the old hard drive with a good SSD. I also have plenty of ports (VGA, DP, RJ45, 3 USB), and the laptop is very sturdy I let it fall many times by mistakes and even through there are some cracks in the case it is still perfectly usable.

Although it's not perfect, the laptop is heavy (about 3kg) and thick (about 3cm). But when I look at possible modern alternative it seems there aren't many which offer multiple ports and easy to do maintenance in a somewhat slim and lightweight case. The closest I've seen is the Fujitsu Lifebook U741X series (if someone has used it with Linux please share your experience). I'm also aware of the Framework laptop but it's bleeding edge so I better wait and see how it turns out to be repairable and robust.

bondant··on Olvid: “the most secure messenger in the world”
The server is indeed not open-source. But the clients have been recently open-sourced: https://github.com/olvid-io
bondant··on Ask HN: How to build a light weight personal blog?
Write the post in markdown then convert them to HTML with pandoc. Write a bash script which walk into every directory to convert and you have a minimalist blog engine.
bondant··on Refined Hacker News
Completely agree. The default font is too small for me to read it, so I set it at 150% and that's it. Everything works fine after this small customisation.
bondant··on Toward Modern Fortran Tooling and a Thriving Developer Community
One reason would be that Fortran has proven itself in the HPC area. Another one would be that it is a much simpler and easy to learn language than Rust (so can quickly train students, PhDs and so on to improve your simulation code, even when they have no programming background).

In most of the HPC codes I've worked with there are no complicated memory management, most of the things are arrays usually declared and allocated at launch time and that's it, no more memory management after that. So I'm not sure what rust would bring on the table, but maybe I'm just missing it.

bondant··on Debian 11
Is it released yet ? The download page still gives a download link to the version 10.10
bondant··on IT Without Software
Plenty of people still use SMS.

Easier than to find if the contact is on Signal/Messenger/Whats'app/Whatever and it works even without having a data plan.

bondant··on 'This is a food bank now': Workers seized a McDonald's in France
Dropping VAT will not necessary reduce food prices.

In 2009 the government reduced the restaurants VAT from 19.5% to 5.5%. Studies found that 30 months later prices had only dropped by 1.9%.

bondant··on HTML Data List Element
Sometimes those interesting features are not easy to find.

When looking up on how to do something for the web, one get tons of answers describing how to do it with javascript and usually with js frameworks. The simple methods (which do not cover all cases but are sometimes enough) are usually buried under.

So unless beginner learn by heart all the html tags (and that is not beginner friendly) they won't know those basic features, so I think that's cool to have a reminder.

bondant··on France's 18-year-olds given €300 culture pass
After accessing the program, one has two years to spend the money, so up to 2022 for people who got it in 2020.
bondant··on France's 18-year-olds given €300 culture pass
Even more ridiculous when you know that the 19 year old of 2021 were 18 year old in 2020 and they could get 500 euros with the very same "pass culture". So it's really hard to see while they would be unhappy.

Edit: in 2020 the pass was not available in the whole country.

bondant··on Great books on classic video games
The Reverse Design series by Patrick Holleman is quite good in my opinion. I particularly enjoyed the one on Chrono Trigger.
bondant··on Google Says Everything at Stadia Is Fine, as the Water Reaches Their Noses
Well it's not like Google Stadia is the only one trying to provide cloud gaming, alternatives exist: Geforce Now, Shadow, Playstation Now, Blacknut. So I don't think the industry is completely against it.
bondant··on Adding ANSI C11 C compiler to D so it can import and compile C files directly
I agree with you. I like how easy it is to embed Lua into an application, but as a language I really prefer python. Sadly it is not as easy to integrate the python interpreter into a project.
bondant··on Vegan cheese has quietly but steadily infiltrated mainstream supermarket shelves
Most of the vegan "cheese" I tasted were honestly quite bad, they seemed to be plastic imitations of standard milk cheese. But once I found one named Cicioni [1], and it was absolutely awesome! But sadly I have a hard time finding it in shops. :(

bondant··on NASA Found Another Way Into Nuclear Fusion (2020)
It is in France, but it's not especially French, it's the International thermonuclear experimental reactor.
bondant··on Show HN: DragonRuby Game Toolkit

bondant··on Pangolin – Mobile AMD laptop with Ryzen CPU and Radeon graphics
And is there anything as enduring and resistant as the thinkpads?

I accidentally spilled a glass of water on my old thinkpad w, and all I had to do was to replace the keyboard (happened twice). It also helped that I could find spare part easily online. Would it be possible with lesser-know brands? It also fell several time on the ground but never broke anything. I'm honestly very interested to know if there are laptops as durable as thinkpads.

bondant··on What's New in SQLite 3.35
Thanks for the recommendations, I will have a look at pysqlite3-binary and apsw.
bondant··on What's New in SQLite 3.35
Yes I'm doing very few update or insert, but I run a lot of queries, so I guess it should be more than okay for DuckDB.
bondant··on What's New in SQLite 3.35
Does someone here use DuckDB in production? Is it as stable as SQLite?

The hosting company I have to work with has a very old version of SQLite installed on the server and they don't want to update it. So I was looking at whether I could replace it with DuckDB since it seems to be easy to install with pip.
