bobkazamakis··on Ask HN: Where are all the parties?
> Between the discretionary lifestyle demands of vegetarians, vegans, non-glutens, non-porks, non-drinkers, anti-smokers, non-problematics, non-outdoorsies, hover-parents, maskers, and the increasingly insane milenial need to make all their experiences on-brand and instagrammabl

This is a weird way to project your insecurities.

bobkazamakis··on Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings to step down from co-CEO
like having two popes.
bobkazamakis··on Nationwide FAA weather reporting outage
>Unlike the NOTAM outage, a METAR outage will and should actually affect flights.

We have mines being blasted to our north in temporarily restricted military airspace - lets just allow pilots to roll the dice?

bobkazamakis··on How Americans of different generations spent their money in 2021
>I worked with ads and promotions for brands in the alcohol space

people that say this with their chest are the type of people I'd expect to do exactly that.

bobkazamakis··on Loneliness is a measure of self-understanding
self is relative
bobkazamakis··on U.S. military-run slot machines earn $100M a year from service members
The soldiers aren't the avatar; they don't keep state after death.

How do you compare the exercise in Vietnam vs the exercise in Afghanistan? Is there a ratio of how badly beaten they are by people shooting back in flip-flops with soviet era AKs?

bobkazamakis··on Conservatives think ChatGPT has gone 'woke'
>Conservatism generally follows the principle of “be conservative in your attempts to alter society”.

This is a nice fuzzy thought, but doesn't seem to be true in practice. It's not about conserving society, but the status quo. Society seemed to do pretty well with Roe v Wade.

bobkazamakis··on We invested 10% to pay back tech debt
I agree with this, but it also requires some skilled automation or very well-defined boundaries; otherwise you spend all of your time maintaining and not enough time implementing features.
bobkazamakis··on Money creation in the modern economy (2014) [pdf]
This kind of thinking is very warm and fuzzy with one or two pigs, and much less so when it's on the scale of billions.
bobkazamakis··on Things I Learned from My 2 Year Old Baby Girl
this isn't the distiction you're hoping it is.
bobkazamakis··on Sergey Brin’s $100B Private Fiefdom (2022)
These aren't mutally exclusive. Plenty of government programs are still underfunded, and plenty of the rich aren't paying their fair debts to society.
bobkazamakis··on Endemic pathogens are causing psychiatric illnesses and shortening lives
do you see "getting stupider" as synonymous with "less profitable in a capitalist system"? Do you think doctors are overworking for fun?
bobkazamakis··on Ask HN: Can you crowdfund the compute for GPT?
> have them do computations that I already know the answer to.

By definition, this is not having them do any computation. The proper solution at this time would be some trapdoor function that is easily verifiable (proof of work), at least while P != NP

bobkazamakis··on SQLite Wasm in the browser backed by the Origin Private File System
>limiting the synchronous APIs to just workers seems like one too many layers of indirection

An unresponsive script is slowing this window down - kill process ot wait?

bobkazamakis··on House Republicans to vote on bill abolishing IRS, eliminating income tax
I'm glad there's representation for MBAs in congress.
bobkazamakis··on Fake it until you automate it
if it's not in the same repo, it means that the deployer can be updated and rolled out independently, and scale with its own resources.

if it's in the same repo, you add complexity -- now I have to ensure my deployment of two unrelated code bases don't collide, there's more cross-team conflicts, and I have to clone down a 200gb repo.

bobkazamakis··on The first time I'm aware that Meta is taking back signed, FTE offers
and those leading indicators are so accurate that everyone following them does nothing but profit? huh. You've really found the secret!
bobkazamakis··on ‘Lack of respect’: outcry over Amazon employee’s death on warehouse floor
>I'm of the opposite view, completely

>Making a fuss wouldn't have made sense, and there's no sense to shut down the warehouse if the medics are confident that it wasn't a workplace accident or safety issue.

most sane HN MBA poster.

bobkazamakis··on Identity thieves bypassed Experian security to view credit reports
If security doesn't impact their bottom line, it's just another beautiful salary for the C suite to parachute off of.
bobkazamakis··on Ask HN: How to move from traditional tech into game dev?
initially, minecraft.
bobkazamakis··on Will we know alien life when we see it?
Everything? You're describing two different channels, not two different intentions.
bobkazamakis··on Canaries in coal mines (2018)
or they don't use the word recursive to describe two meanings, rather than recursion.
bobkazamakis··on Luck, Tesla design likely saved family that plunged off cliff, experts say
>Why did this even turn into a murder charge

You're shocked at the murder charge, and not tesla doung everything it can to paint itself in a better light than it deserves?

bobkazamakis··on VALL-E: Neural codec language models are zero-shot text to speech synthesizers
still wrong; can't best information theory yet.
bobkazamakis··on The skilled trades haven't caught as a career choice with Gen Z
>At some point people need to be honest with themselves about where they’re likely to wind up.

Ah, the social mobility of the american dream.

bobkazamakis··on Salesforce will lay off 10% of staff as part of restructuring
Please tell me what the purpose of living in a society is? Also, be sure not to use the words "firetrucks", "military jobs program", or "I pay my taxes for this exact purpose, in the event I need these services"

How about you let us know when it says yes.
bobkazamakis··on Go 1.20 Cryptography
You're advocating for cryptographic agility, not defense in depth -- with multiple curves comes multiple vectors, and increased attack surface.
bobkazamakis··on Google researcher, long out of math, cracks devilish problem about sets
>Maybe if we had a better way to access actual learning but are teachers even paid enough to truly care?

There's no incentive to pay teachers more; system is working as designed. Those students aren't giving short-term quarterly gains.
