beowulfey··on OpenAI’s CEO says the age of giant AI models is already over
He was a guest on an AI-related discussion panel [1]. I did not attend, but I would guess someone asked him “do you think models will have to continuing growing to even larger sizes,” or something like that, and this was his answer.

Honestly, that anyone thinks he has “ulterior motives” here is hilarious to me. Every day I think more and more that we can no longer think critically on the internet.

beowulfey··on Meta is about to start its next round of layoffs
What does Napster even do now? Can you imagine meeting someone who still works there? I’d have so many questions.
beowulfey··on OpenAI’s CEO says the age of giant AI models is already over
He’s not presenting false evidence here, he’s presenting a hunch. It’s a guess. No one is going to gain anything from this one way or another.
beowulfey··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
If the police are not arresting, they were the ones who made the decision not to prosecute… not the DA. They may blame the DA, but really they just didn’t want to do the paperwork.
beowulfey··on Mamihlapinatapai, Most Succinct Word
That is a perfect example for why these sorts of translations are difficult!
beowulfey··on Mamihlapinatapai, Most Succinct Word
I think it’s more like trying to translate the word “petrichor” (that particular smell that occurs after a rain) into a language of a culture that has not experienced rain before. Without the context of rain, how can you translate the word for its smell? The translation is dependent on a something that is not present.

This word is akin to that, maybe not entirely the same, but in that culture clearly there was a context that enabled a word to be created for it.

beowulfey··on More students are turning away from college and toward apprenticeships
I agree completely but wanted to add a fourth point, which is that college is a necessary stepping stone for most professional sports.
beowulfey··on FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank
This was basically what I was asking. Okay so, because the bank has access to an external supply of “money”, they can loan out more than they have in reserve. Thanks!
beowulfey··on FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank
Am I wrong though that if the loan were to default and the depositor tried to withdraw all 1000, the bank wouldn’t be able to return it?

Perhaps because of the insurance from central banks this problem is avoided.

beowulfey··on FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank
But is it real? It’s more like an IOU, right? They don’t reduce the amount of money in the depositor’s account, but if the loan defaults would they be able to return the money to the depositor? My guess is no, not really (assuming no other outside cash sources).

So even though the amount of currency looks like it has increased, it hasn’t really… unless I’m misunderstanding still. But my impression is this is pretty much what happened yesterday with SVB.

beowulfey··on How peptide injections became the answer to everything
I was just talking about this with my coworkers. Another big anti-aging trend among the wealthy is intravenous NAD treatments ($800/session). Apparently people who do so feel wonderful afterwards. I want to know who is peddling these ideas. I am literally in the process of researching this and it is such an early hypothesis in the field. Who decided this was something worth trying? Clearly we are thinking along the same lines, and I’d love to hear their thoughts!
beowulfey··on Understanding British Money: What's a Quid? A Shilling? (2020)
I didn’t realize grand for 1000 was slang. That one made it to the USA too.
beowulfey··on Chicago sold rights to 36k parking meters for $1.2B that generate $200M per year
The problem is, the goal of a business is not efficiency—it is to make money. There are many ways to make money, and they don’t all come from effiency of service.

(Of course, the goal of government is not efficiency either)

beowulfey··on Apartment rents fall as new supply hits market
While that makes total sense, I think the market has been changing a lot. I suspect many more families are renting now where they might not have previously. Owning a place has become more difficult in many areas of the country.

Not sure of the numbers though. Just a feeling, could be totally wrong. Would love to know if there is data for this.

beowulfey··on Toxic gases connected to Ohio train derailment cause concern
Although the reddit comments are interesting, it may be better to change this link to the original linked AP news article.
beowulfey··on The $20 an hour Cessna 172 experiment (2020)
Did you mean buying a new used car vs a new car? That would financially be a better choice for most americans, yes. But of course you then run into the uncertainty of how long the used car you buy might go before it needs major service. A riskier option that loosely reflects the Pratchett/Vimes “new boots” theory.
beowulfey··on The $20 an hour Cessna 172 experiment (2020)
It’s funny you use the term “afford”. People generally can’t afford modern cars, but thanks to buying on credit becoming such a big part of our culture (curiously enough, also thanks to Ford) we can pretend that we can!
beowulfey··on They say that stocks go down during the day and up at night
I haven’t seen the original source that proposed this cited here yet. Here is the explanation on ArXiv: https://arxiv.org/pdf/1811.04994.pdf
beowulfey··on A Maine community comes together to save a candlepin bowling tradition
Reading through the comments here, it is really fascinating how regular humans used to just “invent” things and create whole businesses around them. Like, the idea that some guy invented the duckpin pin setter, patented it, and managed to make enough of them for duckpin bowling alleys that it is still regionally popular today, is kind of wild. I feel like it doesn’t (and maybe couldn’t) happen today at the same scale.
beowulfey··on Sonic hedgehog protein
That’s the drosophila field for you. All about the silly names
beowulfey··on NYC Slice
7-Eleven Pizza used to be similar. In grad school I loved grabbing two slices and an Arnold Palmer for like $3 or whatever it was.
beowulfey··on FAA NOTAM System Outage
Based on this and the other great PDF someone posted, it sounds like the system itself is fine, but the content is the core problem.
beowulfey··on The California roll was invented by a Japanese-Canadian chef (2020)
No offense meant, but if I put effort into serving you a meal and you said that to me I probably wouldn’t be inviting you over for dinner again, no matter what the steps to prepare it were.
beowulfey··on JPMorgan to spend $1B on rental homes in the US to become a megalandlord
Fascinating. My experience in the US is the exact opposite. Corporate landlords are generally awful, where everything they rent out is full of shoddy repairs and minimum-cost ‘luxury facilities’ to drive up rent. Private landlords, particularly where the owners live in the same building, are almost always better. My experience has largely been in urban areas of the US, not sure about smaller towns; I suspect higher demand is what allows for it.
beowulfey··on Twitter's anti-Mastodon filter evasion
Yes! I think the reason people struggle with Mastodon is they implicitly understand that picking a server is, whether they want it to be or not, a reflection of their online persona, and they don’t know how to find or gauge servers to see if they might “fit”.

I think universities should immediately make official instances for students and faculty. At least in academic twitter circles having an official institutional home would probably help a ton with migration; it would feel like a natural place to be.

beowulfey··on Twitter's anti-Mastodon filter evasion
I am a little younger than the days of decentralized social media, but I caught the tail end of it. To me, Mastodon feels like an “email address” for social media. I think a lot of people are so used to centralized platforms that it seems crazy to have it be decentralized again.

I suspect as Mastodon grows, there will be more servers that become popular and will likely host the bulk of people, in much the same way that gmail pulled in the bulk of email users—but it will still be possible to have other “addresses” too. The idea is starting to grow on me.

beowulfey··on John Carmack Leaves Meta
Carmack has been around a long time, and I’ve never heard a word about him that rings true to the PC. Anyone on here worked with him in the past?
beowulfey··on US Department of Energy: Fusion Ignition Achieved
It’s a proof of concept. Upgrading lasers that already work is not necessarily the best use of limited funds.
beowulfey··on Sperm counts worldwide are plummeting faster than we thought
I think many people would be surprised at how many couples have done IVF recently… I wish I had reliable numbers for it.
beowulfey··on Sam Bankman-Fried and the geometry of conscience
I wouldn’t assume his family is wealthy, just because they are in academia. You don’t go to academia for the money.

(Although I’m not sure exactly what you mean by wealthy vs rich)
