baoluofu··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
I see a lot more of ON being the sneaker brand for people who don't look like they exercise that much. I exercise regularly and got Hoka Clifton 10s for running and daily walking and they are hands-down the best shoes I have had for that purpose. So much so that I immediately bought a second pair so I can alternate between them each day to hopefully keep them lasting longer. I tried on loads of different brands in the running shop and the Clifton 10 wides were definitely the best for my feet, despite my initial assumption that I would prefer ON cloud runners.
baoluofu··on YouTube Removes Windows 11 Bypass Tutorials, Claims 'Risk of Physical Harm'
I have an old gaming pc (i5 3570k) that I thought needed replacing since Windows 10 stopped security updates. Downloading the ISO from the Microsoft website and running this command worked a charm. Zero issues upgrading to Windows 11 and everything works exactly the same as before. Thank you!
baoluofu··on BYD says new fast-charging system could be as quick as filling up a tank
When I was in China last summer, every taxi I used was an electric car. By far, the worst of these was a Tesla Model 3. You can buy serious luxury vehicles for really very little money compared to western manufacturers. Not electric car specific, but for me, the most impressive thing is that the mapping apps are all synchronised with the traffic light systems.
baoluofu··on Ask HN: What is interviewing like now with everyone using AI?
I have found that if you tighten the parameters a bit, you can still get all the benefit of what this question is asking for. For example, teach me the rules of a sport, board game etc. You still get to see if they can present a coherent explanation of something relatively complex, but you can avoid these potentially dangerous topics.

Could be Brainstorm (1983) perhaps?

Also, see the last episode of season one of Black Mirror.

And "brain dances" in Cyberpunk 2077.

baoluofu··on Apple courier may have stolen 2 MacBooks, ... Apple is not going to help
I had a similar situation earlier this year with an iPad delivery. The delivery company missed the target date, then the following day I got a notification that it had been delivered - it hand't been - despite actively following the tracking of the driver in their app and seeing him not come to my house and drive away after delivering to various properties near me, as well as actively watching out for the driver when he was close enough.

The delivery company themselves were extremely unhelpful. Apple on the other hand was very understanding and helpful. It took a few days for them to go through the necessary process with the delivery company, but once done they sent out a replacement, critically with a different delivery company. Apple was proactive in keeping me updated throughout, and always seemed to side with me over the delivery company.

The only snag after that was the pre-purchased Apple care was tied to the undelivered iPad, so it took about a week for one of their specialist teams to transfer it over to the replacement.

baoluofu··on Care Doesn't Scale
I would be keen to read it if you're happy to share?
baoluofu··on Intel Honesty
Your description of reality made me chuckle. I remember during my degree the professor teaching us about how simple CPUs are made, but saying that the people who engineer the current hardware are like dark magicians. It can only have gotten more complicated since then.
baoluofu··on Wireflow – free, online, open source tool for creating user-flow prototypes
I find balsamiq is quite easy to get to grips with. My biggest complaint (at least for the desktop app, haven't tried the cloud version) is the lack of an "infinite" canvas.
baoluofu··on I hacked Magic the Gathering: Arena for a 100% win rate
My understanding is that at the start of a game, the system shuffles and draws three hands for you, and then selects one of them to be your actual starting hand. I don't know what heuristics it uses for which of the three to select, but typically in real life you would be hoping for three lands as a baseline, ideally that can tap for the colours of the spells in your hand as well.

I believe this only applies in best of 1 matches, but not best of three matches.

Unfortunately I don't have a credible source for this.

baoluofu··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2023)
Yurtle | Remote | UK +- 2 hours | Full-time | Full-Stack Software Engineer

Yurtle is a VC funded (just completed a funding round) startup aiming to tackle the growing crisis of caregiving in the UK and beyond. There are 13 million caregivers in the UK - half of which care for both a child and an elderly relative. With an ageing population and an average 10-year gap between lifespan and years in good health, the demand for care is rampant. With care homes becoming even less appealing post-covid, and a projected shortage of 400,000 professional carers by 2028, family caregivers are filling the void. 12,000 people are thrust into a caregiving role each day in the UK alone [0].

We are building a caregiving super app that will provide the right tools, support and community to make caregiving responsibilities significantly more manageable and prevent caregiver burnout. We are then bundling that with a bespoke insurance product that provides money for backup care when a primary caregiver falls ill, which we distribute to companies as an employee benefits package. This allows us to scale much faster than with a direct-to-consumer approach.

We are looking for one or two full stack software engineers who are comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment, and ideally experienced with most, if not all of, React (plus Redux), Node.js, MySQL, Google Cloud, React Native (plus Expo).

If you are interested in applying, please send me (the CTO) an email at jobs+hn@yurtle.co.uk

baoluofu··on Brother have gotten to where they are now by not innovating
I feel like you have presented a straw man argument for what a growth mindset is when it comes to individual people. You have taken extreme behaviours and ascribed them to a growth mindset, which I would disagree with.

I would expect a growth mindset as applied to health and fitness would recognise short term versus long term benefits. Maintaining a healthy bodyweight decreases the risk of all cause mortality. Losing weight to the point of anorexia would cause numerous potential problems, and quickly be recognised as not ideal and a different approach applied.

Optimising conversations only for maximum knowledge extraction is not a valid approach within the broader goal of optimising social interactions to maintain a healthy group of friends and family who you enjoy spending time with and can depend upon for years to come.

A diet of pure protein shakes and broccoli is clearly not in line with any reasonable approach to a healthy diet which instead should aim to have a broad a varied source of nutrients, again with the goal of maintaining long term health and supporting whatever sports/training/activities the person takes part in.

A programmer/software engineer who is serious about improving their craft would be much better served by taking a holistic view of their role and expanding their knowledge and expertise to a much broader set of skills than just algorithms and data structures.

Your hypothetical deranged person I would argue is operating under the exact opposite of a growth mindset.

baoluofu··on Job Applicant Resumes Are Effectively Impossible to De-Gender
Depending on what country you are in, this is illegal no? Not hiring someone based on their ethnicity who is otherwise qualified/the best candidate is racial discrimination, regardless of what that ethnicity is.
baoluofu··on PostgREST 9.0
I investigated this and a few others for quickly spinning up a back office app, and settled on postgraphile. The endpoint that is exposed from the service is authenticated and a role is then set on the request object which postgraphile then uses to set the role for the database transaction. With appropriate roles set in the database, my back office users now have fine-grained permissions for reading/writing only to tables that I want them to.
baoluofu··on Active noise cancellation is not for me
I'm not suggesting using them to isolate oneself from them, just taking the edge off the noise while working to get them to tone it down as you say. It's not always as easy as just asking them as I'm sure you're aware.
baoluofu··on Active noise cancellation is not for me
My AirPods Pros are the best headphones I have ever had. I use ANC as my default unless there is a reason not to.

Also, pro-parenting tip: ANC earbuds without even playing anything are effectively a "turn down the volume" button on your kids screaming!

baoluofu··on Using two keyboards at once for pain relief
I'm the same. Never had an issue with keyboard usage, but started to run into trouble with the mouse usage. I used a wacom tablet as my daily driver for a while but it was a bit too inconvenient. I've found actually that just alternating between a trackpad (left hand) and a mouse (right hand) throughout the day has solved the problem.
baoluofu··on Ask HN: Companies of one, what is your tech stack?
Both API and web app served out of AWS lambda/API Gateway/Cloudfront. Back office app served from S3.

- React and next.js for the web app.

- Node.js & express for the API.

- React-admin for the back office.

- Postgres for the DB.

The biggest benefit to me of the above stack is running it out of AWS lambda. Pay only for what actually gets used, and more importantly it will scale to any sudden surge in customers without any effort on my part.

baoluofu··on Ask HN: Companies of one, what is your tech stack?
I had a look at a lot of the available headless CMS systems last year. Didn't fancy any of them as they just seemed like a UI for building a db schema essentially. So I just added the relevant tables for my content to my db and then it was trivial to add content management UI to react-admin and add react pages on the main website to show the content.
baoluofu··on How to write a resume that converts
When I look at a CV I want to see someone's achievements, ideally quantified. What are they proud of, how have they helped their previous teams/products/companies to succeed, are they passionate about what they do.
baoluofu··on How to write a resume that converts
That seems crazy to me! Whenever I conduct interviews questions about specific situations from their past experience are most of what I ask. "Tell me about a time when..."

I find they can very quickly uncover potential red flags. They can also lead to interesting discussions that leave both me and the candidate enthused about progressing to the next stage.
