awestroke··on Building a Slack/Discord alternative with Tauri/Rust
Isn't "alternative" commutative?
awestroke··on Building a Slack/Discord alternative with Tauri/Rust
I'm building an app using tauri. More than 70% of the code is rust. The tauri codebase itself consists of a lot of Rust code, and it's based on two substantial rust libraries for cross platform window management and cross platform webview management
awestroke··on Stop Calling Each New Disaster “The New Normal”
Communicating the impending doom of man-made climate change had been done in all possible shapes and forms since the 1970s. The approach does not matter, because the truth is too uncomfortable no matter how it's worded. If non-alarmist language is used, then nobody cares. If alarmist langauage is used, people like you compare scientists to flat earthers.

Don't criticise the messengers if you don't like the message.

awestroke··on Vision Pro
Oh really? There is already a "vibrant App Store" (whatever that means) full of VR ready apps? Before anybody has received the hardware?

Or do you mean you can install iPhone apps? That's a completely different thing and makes your statement highly misleading

Also, are you implying that the Quest App Store is somehow not "vibrant"?

There are many reasons why I am super excited about the Vision Pro, but the App Store do not number among them

awestroke··on Effective Rust (2021)
I use the WebToEpub browser extension, it's great and worked very well on the Rustonomicon which uses the same template:

https://github.com/dteviot/WebToEpub

Just make sure to unselect chapters that aren't part of the "book"

awestroke··on APIs for content sites must be free
Any time I see "Sent from my iPhone" I assume the sender is a fool
awestroke··on APIs for content sites must be free
Even so, how would you track impressions?
awestroke··on APIs for content sites must be free
Because you can't include ads in an API response
awestroke··on Rewriting the Ruby parser
Ambigious does not mean invalid
awestroke··on Did Reddit just destroy mobile browser access?
So you've restricted the reddit domain to 1 minute?
awestroke··on Did Reddit just destroy mobile browser access?
1 minute? Is that a typo?
awestroke··on Gren – an Elm fork
No, it's that Elm fans defend the decision to never fix those bugs
awestroke··on Intravenous Caffeine
Arrogance
awestroke··on Val Town Pro - $10/month for more compute, storage, private vals
Not very similar at all
awestroke··on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s first spatial computer
That actually sounds preferable to being fully present, in that situation. I'd rather go out peacefully than screaming in panic
awestroke··on The Rust I wanted had no future
> Delete half of rust's symbols, get rid of its macro system, rewrite it until lifetimes are inferred /or/ allocators are explicitly chosen, etc. etc.

Feel free to do this. I predict you will end up with a language that appeals to nobody but yourself

awestroke··on Leaked source – CS:GO
What are you talking about? GPT4 would not do that kind of mistake. I must say, reading comments like this, that GPT4 actually comes across as more intelligent than many hn commenters
awestroke··on Brute.Fail: Watch brute force attacks fail in real time
It can conserve server resources to just stop responding to brute force attacks
awestroke··on SQL:2023 has been released
If only they could start allowing queries to begin with "FROM tbl". It would allow for for much more helpful autocomplete. Also, DELETE or SELECT should really be on the very last line of the query. Seems like these changes could be done without losing backwards compat
awestroke··on Distcc: A fast, free distributed C/C++ compiler
We used it at a previous job. Every dev computer in the building ran distcc, compiles were distributed and finished super fast.
awestroke··on Slide to Unlock
The solution is to not "buy this"
awestroke··on When LIMIT 9 works but LIMIT 10 hangs
The hanging query has nothing at all to do with the random ordering. RTFA
awestroke··on Arm announces the Cortex X4 for 2024, plus a 14-core M2-fighter
Not TSMC, that's for sure. TSMC is using ASML machines to etch the transistors, so by your logic ASML is the biggest CPU manufacturer
awestroke··on No_color
Why not just change all colors to the same color (b/w) in your terminal emulator settings??
awestroke··on Our model suggests that global deaths remain 5% above pre-Covid forecasts
Yes, it's thoroughly documented that increasing vaccination rates decreases mortality rates
awestroke··on Our model suggests that global deaths remain 5% above pre-Covid forecasts
Fourth leading cause of death. Wow. But we decided as a society that, enough is enough, economic output is more important
awestroke··on Large Language Models Are Few-Shot Health Learners
You are arguing against a strawman of your own making
awestroke··on Large Language Models Are Few-Shot Health Learners
Yes, I review my own code all the time. Right before commit, I read through the diff carefully. Then of course my team reviews the code further.

The same approach works for my health, I MUST review and evaluate my health, it's just not reasonable to expect every single human in the world to go to a doctor every other week. If I come to suspect I have a serious illness, I take it to the next level of review - a doctor. You are painting a very dogmatic, black-and-white picture that cannot include this kind of nuanced approach

awestroke··on Large Language Models Are Few-Shot Health Learners
You forgot to explain why it is so dangerous for people to self diagnose
awestroke··on Dolphin on Steam Indefinitely Postponed
I disagree. I find TOTK to be much more polished and they fixed everything that annoyed me in the first game.
