athorax··on Data Classification: Does Python still have a need for class without dataclass?
For awhile inheritance with dataclasses was fairly broken. They added kw_only in 3.10 which definitely helped. Even outside of dataclasses, python's MRO can be a footgun with multiple inheritance

This video has some good explanations of inheritance behavior in python https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1PQ7zzltz4

athorax··on Google cautions against 'hallucinating' chatbots
I think it is, at least to some extent, intentional. That way people blame the bot instead of the underlying technology when it "misbehaves"
athorax··on Sharing Your Netflix Account
I think that is overly charitable. Their goal is to maximize profits and provide their shareholders with value.
athorax··on Sharing Your Netflix Account
How does that work for Hotels or if you regularly travel between two locations?
athorax··on Sharing Your Netflix Account
Yep, paying $20/mo specifically to be able to play on 3 devices. If they stop allowing sharing, there is little to no value in that plan for me anymore.
athorax··on New Distro 'BlendOS' Combines Arch Linux, Fedora Linux and Ubuntu
He should be proud :)
athorax··on Fentanyl vaccine tested in rats
I think this undermines the issue a bit. A lot of people get addicted to these substances completely by accident and aren't initially seeking to "check out of life." But once you are hooked, it can be a devastatingly difficult road to get off. For sure there are plenty of people who go out looking for escapes and I do agree it is something that needs to be addressed.
athorax··on macOS CLI tool to configure multi-display resolutions and arrangements
I will always +1 for yabai, closest thing to i3wm I have found on macos
athorax··on Which selfhosted container registry are you using?
Artifactory, unfortunately.
athorax··on Translating the Bible is a vexed task
"You may evaluate others' opinions in this way. The more confidence they have, the less competent is their opinion."

Rare self burn, nice.

athorax··on Tim Cook to take 50% pay hit after shareholder feedback
I'll make sure to pour one out for our oil sheikhs tonight
athorax··on Ask HN: How can I find a German family by their crest?
Because the hearts of men are easily corrupted
athorax··on More developers use Linux than Mac, according to 2022 StackOverflow survey
Yeah... "More Developers Use Linux than Mac, Report Shows" is a pretty disingenuous take. "More developers use some combination of linux/macos/windows more than macos" maybe
athorax··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours? (2022 edition)
jq + parallel is a godsend. Take some command output, run another json-producing command in parallel on each line, and pipe it back into jq -s

athorax··on What makes Git so hard to use?
I can't tell you how many times I'd gzip a project before trying something in git just in case lol. Then I finally took the time and learned how to actually use it correctly
athorax··on What makes Git so hard to use?
I think git is hard because 99% of the time it just works with little to no required understanding of what you are actually doing. That is to say that git is actually too easy... until it isn't. Once you hit a scenario where you get off the happy path, that is when git becomes hard.
athorax··on Studies find automatic braking can cut crashes over 40%
Low hanging branches heading up to our house trigger ours when it is breezy out. Super annoying.
athorax··on Fedora Linux 37
I'm honestly more surprised that they are shipping Python 3.11
athorax··on Ask HN: What Is a COO?
I don't think there is any one specific answer. It is going to vary a lot company to company and will depend highly on the CEO. Places I have worked, the CEO & COO operate very closely together with the COO usually focusing more on the internal company functions while the CEO focused more externally.
athorax··on Ask HN: How do you manage on-prem servers?
Ubuntu MaaS, OpenStack Ansible for control plane, Ansible for hypervisor provisioning. Probably overkill unless you are running hundreds of hosts
athorax··on Test scores are not irrelevant
How does that stop them in any capacity from living off their parent's wealth?
athorax··on OpenBSD Minimalist Desktop
That's why I run xfce4, best of both worlds!
athorax··on Meta Quest Pro
It is really annoying their "tech specs" is all just marketing buzz words. Even worse the first "spec" listed is:

  PREMIUM COMFORT
World class counter balanced ergonomics meets sleek design to create a more comfortable headset.
athorax··on The life-changing effects of hallucinations
This is a great example of why the war on drugs has been such a tremendous failure. You shouldn't have to risk life and limb to explore your consciousness
athorax··on Watchman: Execute a command when something changes
+1 for reflex, love being able to have a config for development

Example .reflex.conf to run one command when an openapi spec changes and another when any go files change:

  -g "spec.yaml" -- bash -c 'make'
  -sr "\.go$" -- go run cmd/app/main.go
Then run it with:

  reflex -d fancy -c .reflex.conf

Hey now, let's leave the strawmen in the fields shall we?
athorax··on You will ask many, many questions
Oof. Block out time on your calendar if you need not be disturbed at certain times of the day. Expecting everyone else you work with to understand your idiosyncratic system is not a reasonable thing to do.
athorax··on Meta announces hiring freeze, warns employees of restructuring
Facebook is notorious for using leetcode problems verbatim. Your singular experience does not invalidate that fact.
athorax··on Ask HN: What are you doing this weekend?
Eloping with the love of my life :)
