athorax··on Two Git ignore files nobody told me about
This is one of the strangest opinions I've seen in awhile. Your complaint seems like it should be pointed at projects not having a working "clean" make target.

Also:

  git status --ignored
git clean -ndX # preview what would be removed
git clean -fdX # actually delete the files (warning: destructive)
athorax··on LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features
Not sure what is "bold" about that claim, soffice is used in a ton of "document generation skills" and as soon as those tools start making into people's CI pipelines there will inevitably be spikes in download activity.

athorax··on LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features
If anything, it would be seeing a surge because of AI. LibreOffice cli is the go to method for doing office documents -> pdf -> image rendering for agent doc rendering feedback.
athorax··on Omarchy: 1Password and 37signals become Distinguished Corporate Patrons
At a minimum its DHH trying to launder his reputation
athorax··on Aphantasia Beginner's Guide
This is close to my experience as well, but it certainly doesn't seem to be the case for everyone. My wife can picture things in her head and describe them in vivid detail and talks about how she can move and manipulate the objects and change the colors and shapes in more or less infinite detail
athorax··on Aphantasia Beginner's Guide
I see actual images, but at least for me its not anywhere near the same as actually looking at something. Its sort of like watching a low fidelity movie for me and I can't really "focus" in on specific details of what I'm visualizing. I think there is definitely a spectrum.
athorax··on Canonical Backs New Project to Translate Large C Codebases into Safe Rust
Again, how is that an indication of "sysadmin" type employees rather than misaligned SWEs?
athorax··on Canonical Backs New Project to Translate Large C Codebases into Safe Rust
> They mostly have sysadmin types of employees.

What on earth led you to that conclusion?

athorax··on AWS Secrets Manager Terraform: Least-Privilege Access
This is just straight slop. The person who prompted this didn't read it, you shouldn't waste your time on it either.
athorax··on Golang proposal: container/: generic collection types
On one hand I'm glad to see this being added, but its becoming obvious building generics into the language as-is just isn't a good fit. Hopefully Go v2 can solve this at a more foundational level while still allowing interop or easy porting form current go code.
athorax··on It's getting harder to focus every day
I understand your pain. One of the cruel realities of ADHD is how difficult it makes doing the things needed to help you treat it. I honestly just went with whatever my doctor/insurance gave me. Its a Luna G3X and my insurance uses a company called BetterNight. They have been fine so far, but I know there are also companies you can use that don't take insurance that I have generally heard are better to work with if you are okay with not using insurance. Lofta was what was recommended to me by a coworker.
athorax··on It's getting harder to focus every day
I recently went through this. I was diagnosed with ADHD 15 years ago and have been managing it, but over the last 2-3 years I had been experiencing increased levels of brain fog, fatigue, and by ability to focus had deteriorated to the point I wasn't sure if I would be able to continue working. I had a sleep study done 10 years ago that only found Night Terror Disorder, but no signs of sleep apnea. I did another sleep study about 6 months ago and it turns out while I wasn't having apnea events I had constant and persistent hypopnea. Started using a CPAP and it feels like I've been given a second lease on life. FWIW, I am a very active and in shape individual within a healthy weight range. Don't wait to get tested if you have even the slightest worry you may have it.
athorax··on The state of open source AI
The moat is enterprise contracts and artificial friction moving between harnesses. Moat is a strong word, more of a puddle.
athorax··on Resetting Xbox

It is neither possible nor desirable to own every great independent studio. We have also learned that we are not the best home for every type of studio
This is shockingly self-aware for microsoft
athorax··on Tesla is recalling its cheaper Cybertruck because the wheels might fall off
Hey just FYI, this kind of behavior is super annoying.
athorax··on Our Continuation of MkDocs
Zensical has been a solid replacement for us so far. In general everything "just works" out of the box and is way quicker to build/reload. It is still in fairly early stages, but is actively being worked on https://zensical.org/spark/proposals/zap-005-navigation-auth...

I hope they are able to monetize in a way the keeps the core project open while making it a sustainable venture going forward.

athorax··on Zed 1.0
1. I'm pretty sure setting "Maximum Tabs" does what you want, but not positive.

2. Uncheck "Hide .gitignore" setting and it won't do this.

3. Agreed

4. This is configured in the "Restore on Startup" setting (I think you want "Last Session")

athorax··on Changes to GitHub Copilot individual plans
This might have been bad timing. Copilot API broke things last weekend with caused a lot of tool calls in various agent harnesses to start failing like the edit tool.

Example zed issue https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/54219?issue=zed...

Do you realize Claude and Codex are different products by different companies?

Did you even look in that repo?
athorax··on Node.js needs a virtual file system
Not sure if you are intentionally misrepresenting (a), but here is the full text

(a) The contribution was created in whole or in part by me and I have the right to submit it under the open source license indicated in the file; or

athorax··on Node.js needs a virtual file system
How exactly does it violate the Developer's Certificate of Origin clause?
athorax··on Just-bash: Bash for Agents
Why do you think there is a lot of training data? Could it be because it's stable and virtually unchanged for decades? Hmmm.
athorax··on Windows 11 Notepad to support Markdown
It's like they are trying to do the opposite of the Unix philosophy. Do many things very poorly.
athorax··on Another GitHub outage in the same day
They dont care. Their sales reps absolutely know that if you are using Microsoft products it is because you are locked in so deeply that escape is nearly impossible.
athorax··on Cue Does It All, but Can It Literate?
I like CUE a lot. We use it pretty heavily for schema enforcement of CRDs. That being said, it is pretty complex and learning to use it was anything but straight forward.

For more basic configs, I would potentially look into KCL https://www.kcl-lang.io/

It has a much simpler usage overall especially if you are only really trying to enforce some config rules.

The other alternative is to just use whatever language you are writing your software in and build a basic validator

athorax··on Zig quits GitHub, says Microsoft's AI obsession has ruined the service
Lets put it this way, no engineer is choosing to use bitbucket. You use it because some SVP made the mistake of choosing atlassian software a decade ago and refuses to change.
athorax··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
For me the biggest value of uv was replacing pyenv for managing multiple versions of python. So uv replaced pyenv+pyenv-virtualenv+pip
athorax··on Show HN: Apache Fory Rust – 10-20x faster serialization than JSON/Protobuf
I am confused on this as well, they list polyglot teams[0] as their top use case and consider not needing schema files a feature
