Unless you use a keyboard like a Dactyl Manuform that provides your thumbs with better access to such modifier keys https://github.com/abstracthat/dactyl-manuform
archarios··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
touchpads are literally the worst kind of mousing interfaces ergonomically
archarios··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
If you heard me say this in person I'm sure that you'd hear in the tone of my voice that I'm more coming from a place of concern than anything. I understand that what I said landed wrong though. Sorry. I'm just trying to say to other people what I wish I heard from someone years ago when I was having the same issues.
archarios··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
True. I am speaking from my own experience of having a lot of pain at the desk at one point in my life. After I started exercising regularly I have had zero problems for years.
archarios··on Ask HN: What lesser-known accessories do you use with your computer?
If you're having those issues, please address the underlying problem instead of thinking that having the perfect ergonomic setup will fix your body. Getting up from the desk each day and getting some physical activity in will help your body a lot more in the long run.

No but Signal has a desktop app..
archarios··on We ran a phone check at a Y Combinator event in SF
No just SMS. I have been using WhatsApp desktop a lot more.
archarios··on We ran a phone check at a Y Combinator event in SF
Well those flip phones aren't built with the same intentions. This phone was made to be distraction free as much as is practical. It restricts me in ways that I appreciate. I have zero ways to check email, reddit, etc.

archarios··on Mostly adequate guide to FP (in JavaScript)
This is exactly my impression as well and my personal experience. I first felt like I really understood functional programming when I started using Ramda. It was a library that provided me functional tools in a language I was already familiar with and that allowed me to play around freely without friction.
archarios··on Mostly adequate guide to FP (in JavaScript)
The first bits of code I come across on this codebase isn't functional: https://github.com/prettydiff/share-file-systems/blob/master.... You're modifying state. You're implementing iteration with do..while loops. That doesn't scream functional to me. Iteration is done with things like Array.map, Array.filter, Array.reduce in functional JS. Higher order functions are key. Functional code is declarative. do..while is imperative.
archarios··on Mostly adequate guide to FP (in JavaScript)
I completely understand where you are coming from and don't doubt that you've seen some gross things built in the name of "functional Node". I do think that functional JS can be elegant when applied with restraint.

I've really enjoyed creating functional pipelines with Ramda in the past for professional projects. I liked how I could use the Ramda functions to explicitly state in my code what the flow of data was with functions like pipe and converge. It seemed to me that being able to understand the dataflow was easier with this paradigm. I could even create pipelines that would automate away dealing with promises in my pipelines with pipeWith. I would implement the same bits of code in "vanilla" js and with Ramda and Ramda was more concise and easier to read (if you understood how Ramda worked...).

You can see an example of the style that I like here: https://github.com/chughes87/calendarbot. I definitely was more "clever" in parts of that codebase than I let myself be in a professional setting heh.

I successfully onboarded a different team onto one of my projects when I was being switched to a different product at my company. An engineer who later did some maintenance work on it told me that the codebase was simple and easy to work with. I did get complaints about a later project that I implemented with Ramda from a person who was totally uninitiated and didn't bother to ask me for help..

I made a lil presentation about Ramda that explains some of this with some graphics that I think are helpful: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1tmre_8qJP-QhakXbiBpZ...

archarios··on Repairing a tiny ribbon cable inside a 28 year old IBM ThinkPad 701c
I have an OP-1 that could use similar love on the ribbon cable. pretty nervous to try it though..
archarios··on Honestly, It's Probably the Phones
Obligatory plug for the Light Phone 2. I have had one for two years now and I love it. I still keep a smart phone around for some things but it is generally in a drawer powered down. I have had a significant improvement in my mental health since I've gotten it.
archarios··on Learn Vim (2021)
Even a lot of web-based IDE type things have VIM bindings available!
archarios··on Learn Vim (2021)
VS Code with vim keybindings is extremely popular. If you don't know how to use vim, you just don't realize how much of a time/effort saver it is. I can't imagine not having wrist pain if I had to use the mouse every time I wanted to move my cursor around for more than a few characters/lines. Trying to not use vim feels like going back to the stone age whenever I can't use it. I like to use vim bindings even when I'm editing english.

archarios··on Worst Rated Dishes in the World
I tried this a few years ago at a place in Oakland CA called Spices 3! It was horrid smelling. I didn't know what to expect but I HAD to try "stinky tofu". I gave it the old college try but only ate a few bites. The taste was not bad but I could NOT get over the smell. It was extremely overpowering. I had them take it away at one point.
archarios··on Yerba Mate – A Long but Current History (2021)
I drink coffee daily and don't experience any crash. I do drink water between sips so that may affect my experience. Many blog posts online claim this practice helps to avoid crashing. I like the taste of Yerba Mate but I find it makes me feel weird a lot of the time.

archarios··on Bipartisan Legislation to Ban TikTok
I would love if the govt banned all digital fentanyl personally.
archarios··on The Terminal for the 21st Century
>For TMUX, don't know what you would need that for honestly.

It's super useful for doing things on remote servers. Tmux can maintain a "session" between ssh connections. So I can start a long running process on a tmux pane and then log out and come back to it later to see how things went. I also generally do development over SSH so it's nice to not have to re-set things up each time I SSH into the VM.

archarios··on The Terminal for the 21st Century
fang devs like to think that they are somehow superior to the rest of us. So they think mentioning that they work for a fang company gives their statements greater importance.
archarios··on The Right to Be Lazy (1883)
Yeah I suppose if we had fully automated space communism already I may have a different viewpoint..
archarios··on The Right to Be Lazy (1883)
IDK about y'all, but being lazy generally makes me feel horrible. I love getting things done. I hate having to labor simply to enrich others and for me to survive. But I love doing work that I think is meaningful and makes a difference so much more than chilling all day. Chilling needs to happen, but not all the time!

archarios··on All companies are fucked up
This was a lot less anti capitalist than I was hoping lol
archarios··on Salary Transparency
Maybe trusting OP's lived experience is the best path here. This is the kind of thing that someone is only going to conclude for themselves. So I don't think you're doing anyone any favors by saying/asking something like this.
archarios··on Being on a board as an employee
Participation in a company is not entirely at will. We all have to work for some company to survive. If all companies that I have access to are all authoritarian dictatorships, I'm forced to live under that kind of rule.

Your thinking doesn't seem to take into account the social and economic power dynamics at play. The working class has less bargaining power than the capitalist class right now in general. We are forced to live under their terms and have very little say in what the status quo is.

archarios··on A generically typed pipe function in TypeScript
Um, Ramda has pipe and types: https://www.npmjs.com/package/@types/ramda. Although I liked my own implementation of a pipeP (pipe that automatically unwraps promises) that let you specify the type of the input and output of the pipeline: https://github.com/chughes87/ramdaP-ts/blob/main/index.ts#L1....
