anewaccount2021··on Laura Poitras,Co-Founder of the Intercept Says She Was Fired for Airing Concerns
Well, no one really reads The Intercept anymore, so clearly principled, critical journalism isn't paying the bills.

But do they really hope to distinguish themselves from the rest of the liberal pablum (Atlantic, NYTimes, Guardian etc)? The market for establishment shilling will get tighter with Trump gone...

anewaccount2021··on Protocol for a U.S. Nuclear Strike
If someone in Russia has decided my family can be incinerated, I don't see why the favor can't be returned. I mean, if we had a mindset of "one human family", nuclear weapons wouldn't even exist.
anewaccount2021··on Protocol for a U.S. Nuclear Strike
Obviously - the point being, this command chain is optimized and conditioned for compliance.
anewaccount2021··on Billionaires add $1tn to net worth during pandemic as their workers struggle
It won't stop. Since most non-rich consumers are maxed out on debt (induced to do so by ever-lowering rates), the Fed basically cannot raise rates. If they do, increased costs of debt servicing will crater tens of millions, and also destroy many businesses. This is why the Fed is sending messages to the market that it will allow some "overheating" - it has no choice.

So with rates low and trapped at low levels, these numbers are just going to keep rising. For those who don't have the capital to invest, things will just get worse - they have to carry the burden of inevitable inflation the Fed cannot fight.

anewaccount2021··on Protocol for a U.S. Nuclear Strike
Speaking to people who have worked in Titan II silos (admittedly, long ago in the 70s), the opposite is true. They were conditioned to believe if they received a launch order, the US was already a cinder. The person I spoke to said he would "absolutely" fire if he had received an order.
anewaccount2021··on U.S. jobless numbers surge as worsening Covid-19 pandemic hurts businesses
For many, their former workplaces are gone. So beating covid won't put them back to work immediately, and many will become the permanently (and eventually uncounted) unemployed.
anewaccount2021··on A Complete Course of the Raku programming language
LearnXinYminutes has a great tutorial. The main raku.org site already has incredible docs.
anewaccount2021··on Covid vaccination passport is being created by firms like Microsoft and Oracle
Twitter, Youtube and Facebook privatized free speech, and they can selectively deplatform that right on a whim.

Now Microsoft will privatize freedom of movement? How long until they are pressured to put former Parler users on a permanent no-movement list, regardless of vaccination status?

anewaccount2021··on A Complete Course of the Raku programming language
Raku incorporates many of the neatest ideas in languages but retains a perlish flavor. I would almost equate it with Racket, in that there is support for many styles of coding, and your code may look nothing like another's. TMTOWTDI is fundamental to the perl philosophy so if you prefer total consistency, you are probably better off with python or go.
anewaccount2021··on A Complete Course of the Raku programming language
I use both every day. The core perl5 packages I rely on are updated regularly. The perl5 runtime is released on a reliable schedule. Everything works.

I use raku mostly for fun. It has come a long way. It has further to go, but I don't mind. There is a surprising amount of vital packages already available for getting things done.

I don't think anyone believes perl5 will be as popular as it was years ago, or that raku will be a top-five language, but who cares? As long as the core community persists, its enough.

anewaccount2021··on I believe US could see rolling series of “Ireland events” over next 2 months
There is nothing about the severity of covid that merits shutting down the entire economy.

A full shutdown of the entire economy (i.e. you can't get food or water if you need them) would only be warranted in the case of an existential threat.

anewaccount2021··on Top scientists warn of 'ghastly future of mass extinction' and climate disruptio
I never see HN readers taking personal responsibility in any thread regarding climate change. Every comment just damns other people. If you are a techie in North America, you are in the top 1% of all-time polluters, if not the top 0.1%. Me too. I admit it. Stop wagging your fingers at other people.
anewaccount2021··on Apple launches new Racial Equity and Justice Initiative projects
Samsung S20 made in Vietnam. Find me stories of expoitation.
anewaccount2021··on Apple launches new Racial Equity and Justice Initiative projects
Apple customers know the supply chain is supported by coerced labor and they don't care. I mean...look no further than HN...everyone here has seen the stories, and you are all still buying iPhones.
anewaccount2021··on Ask HN: How do we build the new remote education system
Exactly. For k-12 this year will be the end of lockdown.edu. Parents will go into revolt otherwise. The government can't afford a scenario that pits working parents against the primary target cohort of covid (old and obese) because the electoral prospects are frightening. Stay-at-home schools means stay-at-home parents and the implications of eighteen more months of income-by-stimulus isn't on anyone's radar
anewaccount2021··on U.S. to require negative Covid-19 tests for international air passengers
Covid isn't remotely impactful enough to create de-facto internment camps.
anewaccount2021··on Mozilla brings its VPN to Mac and Linux
VPN providers have to be neutral or whats the point. Mozilla, increasingly, is quite vocal about a non-neutral network based on deplatforming, exclusion, and purity tests. So they're one of the last orgs I would trust as a VPN provider.

Brendan Eich had the last laugh. Brave is everything Mozilla should have been.

anewaccount2021··on An amendment to the Constitution of the USA to abolish the electoral college
I'm pretty sure in the next ten years that will be fixed.
anewaccount2021··on An amendment to the Constitution of the USA to abolish the electoral college
The Constitution will never again be amended, because you will never get 2/3 of States to ever agree on anything, ever.

As it stands, such an amendment would require rural citizens to effectively eliminate themselves from the electoral system. They will never consent to this and why would they? Since State legislatures are also not pure popular-votes, this assures that nothing remotely resembling this will ever happen. No rural voting district will consent to being washed out by a large metro.

anewaccount2021··on Solarwind, Fireeye, Microsoft and Cisco leaks are offered for sale
US digital infrastructure is the ultimate soft target. I assume for every SolarWinds we hear about, there are others that the government squashes due to sheer embarrassment or national security concerns.
anewaccount2021··on GitHub is facing employee backlash
These employee "backlashes" are increasingly toothless. It was only a couple of weeks ago that a Google employee published a diatribe in Wired demanding that Timnit Gebru be rehired, promoted, and an indoctrination program be forced on employees. Google's response? Nothing. Zilch. What was the fallout? Nothing, Zilch. Has anyone responded to, or even really cared about what Google's "union" is saying? I haven't even seen as much as a "we acknowledge your statement" from Google's execs.

Typing things doesn't matter anymore! You have to be willing to act. Both Pichai and Nadella know that no one is really going to walk away from their plum, very-well-paid positions over a political issue...and they're basically right.

These employee "backlashes" are shaping up to be nothing more than Scream Therapy and are being tuned out.

BETTER DO WHAT WE SAY OR WE'LL GO BACK TO OUR DESKS AND WORK QUIETLY!

anewaccount2021··on Airbus hit as new US tariffs come into force
I don't think this really signifies a meaningful deterioration - this has been happening forever. Its diplomacy by trade policy. The EU does the same to us, we do the same to Canada, Canada does the same to us. Usually the penalized industries are just propped up with subsidies in the targeted country anyway. If anything, trade wars were more vicious a century ago than they are now.

In most of these nations, the measures have strong support. You can't expect a Canadian farmer or French wine maker to put the concerns of Americans above their own economic interests. I highly doubt homegrown EU-tech companies were at all bothered by recent measures against US tech giants.

anewaccount2021··on Airbus hit as new US tariffs come into force
I expect Biden to photocopy the Trump trade agenda, and all indications are he will do exactly this. Not just with the EU, but China as well.

Boeing is a major employer, union stronghold (still), and in rough shape. It would be political suicide for Biden to throw them under the (Air)bus just to blanket-reverse every Trump-era policy.

anewaccount2021··on Two Worlds: So Much Prosperity, So Much Skepticism
FORBEARANCE

Easy to save money when you aren't paying your biggest bill.

anewaccount2021··on House Democrats Introduce Article of Impeachment Against Trump
Justified or not, it will be very difficult to for Biden to cast himself as a unifier after this.
anewaccount2021··on Germany and France Oppose Trump’s Twitter Exile
Token counterpoint so they don't just appear to be stooges in America's culture wars...but I really don't believe either of Merkel or Macron is truly interested in anything but a totally sanitized and nerfed internet.

The good news is we are seeing a new reality - internet "power" is useless. Your pithy, massively-upvoted comment on reddit doesn't move the needle anymore. This was the real lesson of the Capitol riots...keyboard warriors will need to get out of their chairs.

anewaccount2021··on Clubhouse now has 1M active users
All the key influencers and thought leaders who have been bemoaning the outsized influence of social media are now clamoring to join an app that lets you literally scream at people.

Keyboard Warriors are so 2020...we've upgraded to Scream Mobs!

anewaccount2021··on Worst Revolution Ever
Because it wasn't a "revolution" or insurrection, that's inane. It was a bunch of bozos who rioted. What they did was just a massive embarrassment to the establishment that had written them off as buffoons.

Amusingly, we have decided NOT to use the word "insurrection" for the conversation Nancy Pelosi apparently had with the Joint Chiefs to subvert the nuclear chain of command based on nothing more than her personal whim. Stealing a podium? Sedition! Stealing nuclear launch codes? Meh.

Amazingly, this story is feeding on itself as it gets repeated. At first they were vandals, then insurrectionist...by next week they'll be an existential threat to life on Earth and people will be calling for the death penalty for everyone in attendance.

Control yourself people! The Bonus Army occupied the Capitol too and you've probably never even heard of them.

Fear not, the MAGAtards will be behind bars and the world will be safe for you to curl up with the writings of Trotsky delivered to your doorstep by someone earning minimum wage.

anewaccount2021··on Will the US experience a violent upheaval in 2020? (2012)
You need look no further than the concerted and organized effort to shut-down Bernie Sanders twice, and frankly he isn't even particularly radical. No one you mentioned represents a meaningful threat to the status quo - America has a single ruling class and the Capitol is their museum.
anewaccount2021··on Will the US experience a violent upheaval in 2020? (2012)
Once again - the best educated voter still only has two choices, and neither of these represent the poor.

Do people on HN really think the very rich or the very poor were at all bothered by the Capitol riots? Government is irrelevant to both groups, in different ways.
