anewaccount2021··on Justin Trudeau’s Plan to Control the Internet
Canada is becoming a police state. Government decides what you watch. Government tells you if you can visit another country. Government tells you how many years you must wait for elective surgery.
anewaccount2021··on Student passes 3 classes in 4 years, ranks near top half of class with 0.13 GPA
Blue No Matter Who. Its why Andrew Cuomo would be re-elected tomorrow, as would Gavin Newsom. Indeed, if I were Andrew Cuomo, I would schedule an election ASAP - there's nothing like a vote mandate to erase any doubt.
anewaccount2021··on Student passes 3 classes in 4 years, ranks near top half of class with 0.13 GPA
You're being too high-minded.

This is about absent parents and a school board that has already given up on students before they even enroll.

This is not a "systemic" national issue...its an issue for inner city schools where the students are poor and brown.

anewaccount2021··on Money Creation: 344% in the Last 12mo (Fed, M1, $)
No, debt levels are too high. Raise rates and you crush borrowers who are already saturated with debt and cannot absorb variable rates rising. The Fed is trapped.
anewaccount2021··on NRA bankruptcy lets critics peer into gun lobby’s inner workings
No. Five million gun purchase background checks were done last year for new gun owners.

https://www.nssf.org/first-time-gun-buyers-grow-to-nearly-5-...

At no time in history have more Americans owned guns per-capita

anewaccount2021··on NRA bankruptcy lets critics peer into gun lobby’s inner workings
Gun stores cannot keep inventory on their shelves. In 2020 America gained five million new gun owners. Restrictions have done nothing to curb demand. History tells us gun demand is proportional to threats of new restrictions...so oddly enough if you wanted to reduce demand, you would be better off reducing restrictions
anewaccount2021··on The war on disinformation is a war on dissent
does anyone really believe anything pseudoanonymously contributed on the web anymore? I don't. For all you know, the person you are "debating" on disqus is a bot. Or a sockpuppet. Or someone real who is only taking a contrary position to alleviate boredom. Now to go to Yelp and review some restaurants I've never been to...maybe after that, go to reddit and tell people my parents died of covid so I can be angry for karma
anewaccount2021··on White House says its supports Artemis Program to return to the Moon
Kicking the can. The scheduled landing is already beyond Biden's first term, so this seems to amount to the administration telling NASA it is free to spend its allowance however it wants. Finally squashing this will be someone else's job, but squashed it will be.
anewaccount2021··on The (Apparently) Georgia-Built Kia Apple Car: What We Know So Far
So...built by Kia, probably shown and delivered at Kia dealerships...serviced at Kia dealerships...
anewaccount2021··on Ray Dalio: Governments Will Ban Bitcoin
The entire peacetime power of industrialized governments is their fiat currency. Without it, these governments don't even exist. No alternatives to fiat can be tolerated in the long term.

An easy solution would be to just ban crypto from being on either side of any regulated transaction. That would include cashing out, as that is a transaction from crypto to fiat currency. Depositing money into crypto would become unregulated (you have no recourse if you are ripped off), but that wouldn't matter - hardly anyone beyond darknet participants will want to bother at that point. Crypto can go back to being the currency of choice for buying weed or mdma...no one will care at that point, as fiat currency isn't threatened by drug deals.

Some people seem to think the size of the crypto market means it can't be smashed for yucks. No one who "matters" is staked out on crypto, these people can all be left to twist in the wind.

Crypto can be destroyed. Gold on the other hand can only be moved. There is no economical way to actually destroy gold, and obviously no way to create more of it. Gold will still be here when the last Beanie Baby unravels, when the last Hank Aaron baseball card turns to dust, and when the last ssd full of bitcoin falls apart in a landfill.

anewaccount2021··on Why Does It Matter If Interest Rates Are Below the GDP Growth Rate?
If you remove stimulus and money printing, real GDP probably shrank last year. These numbers are as faked as the employment stats at this point...but the idea that the world's largest economy is shrinking would be a massive shock to digest.
anewaccount2021··on Global crypto market cap hit a new record of $1.18T
This is really a measure of how out-of-control the fiat printing presses are.
anewaccount2021··on Real interest rates have been falling for centuries
Interest rates are the cost of money. The more money you print, the less scarce it is, the lower the cost to borrow it. This is why at the extreme end of money printing, you end up with negative rates. This article keeps getting submitted as if it signifies some success...
anewaccount2021··on Google, Apple cave to Pakistan pressure to take down apps by Ahmadiyya Muslims
where are all the commenters who told us private companies are free to filter on private platforms as they see fit?
anewaccount2021··on Opinion – The Economy Does Much Better Under Democrats. Why?
The Fed Chair is the one who stimulates the economy since the late 90s, it doesn't matter who is elected
anewaccount2021··on Bay Area Takes Step Toward Major Housing Growth
A plan that calls for a massive increase in low-income housing but has no idea who will build it. Low income housing isn't profitable for developers, which is why in thirty years of the too-expensive Bay Area, hardly any has been built.

In reality, the new housing will be too expensive for the sliver of working class people who remain in the Bay Area, who will have no choice but to go even further out.

In any case, the problem is solving itself, as tech workers realize there is electricity and internet connections in other States too. The only thing missing in most of the States they are heading to is taxation.

anewaccount2021··on IBM has cut its blockchain team down to almost nothing – sources

anewaccount2021··on Email from Jeff Bezos to employees
Yup health insurance is particularly expensive for older Americans!
anewaccount2021··on Drug decriminalization in Oregon begins today
The not-homeless, not-drug-addict rest-of-society is already well on its way with its response...gated communities. No homeless, no open drug use...all protected by private property laws and private security. Get ready for more of them. It doesn't matter what laws you will pass, you don't get past the front gate unless your card scans.

In the end, the only people who will be forced to look at open drug use and homelessness will be people who can't afford to buy a unit in a SafeStreets(tm) community (YC Winter 25!).

edit since HN is rate-limiting me: my point is, you aren't going to be happy with the response everyone-else has to social-engineering legislation they don't agree with. If you don't want more inequality and social divisions, stop giving people a reason to build a moat.

anewaccount2021··on Drug decriminalization in Oregon begins today
Why would anyone enter rehab if the government is providing free, high-quality drugs?
anewaccount2021··on Microsoft's Bing ready to step in if Google pulls search from Australia
This seems like a great opportunity for Australia to fund and develop home-grown tech. Search is well-understood enough that they should be able to build it locally if there is some public support.
anewaccount2021··on Ford, Google form 'strategic partnership' on cloud services, Android
> This plagues every single device that runs Android

huh? My Samsung S20 is on the latest OS and security patches

anewaccount2021··on Ford, Google form 'strategic partnership' on cloud services, Android
Doubt it...Tesla has made OTA updates a new baseline/table-stakes for the industry, I would expect everyone to follow suit eventually.

Have to wonder if this "partnership" will also result in Waymo tech ending up in Ford vehicles...

anewaccount2021··on For Wars of the Future, Pentagon Looks to Distant Past: The B-52
The B1 was too expensive to fully replace the B52

The B2 was too expensive to replace even the limited number of B1s

The B21 will likely have its costs revised so much higher that it will meet the same fate as the Zumwalt

America relies on the B52 because it has to, not because it wants to

anewaccount2021··on Columbia University students are holding a tuition strike
Come on, we all know the real solution is to keep tuitions in the stratosphere, punctuated only by a call to forgive a select subset of student debt when it is politically advantageous

anewaccount2021··on Nine investors make $16B on GameStop stock squeeze
Well at the very least, you have to assume full-time salaried employees have some sort of equity compensation. So this is basically an awesome lottery outcome for them. Hopefully they give the hourly employees some sort of nice reward for sticking around too.

I don't see big opportunities to restructure the business - if the executive team could build a better business, they wouldn't be in this shape to begin with.

anewaccount2021··on Nine investors make $16B on GameStop stock squeeze
April 1, 2021 - Gamestop announces intention to acquire Apple

edit: Jesus folks, this is obviously a joke. Lighten up HN!

anewaccount2021··on China warns Taiwan independence means war as US pledges support
Taiwan's strength is human capital, not natural resources. We should begin offering relocation and a path to citizenship to Taiwanese. If China really wants another island, let them have it. Without the human capital, it isn't worth much.

In any case, Americans should start making peace with some aspects of Chinese expansionism. We aren't going to start WW3 in the South China Sea over Taiwan, and if we did, there is a good chance we would lose.

Bring the best Taiwanese to the US and if China thinks they can get them back, then yes, its turn-the-launch-key time as that represents a threat to domestic soveriegnty.

anewaccount2021··on Interview: James Medlock
So explain to me the motivation for raising taxes in an era of rampant, delirious money printing. The only argument is to punish the rich...at the rate we are going, all collected taxes will soon become insignificant relative to new debt...i.e. why collect one dollar when you are printing twenty? Just print nineteen.

I'm not the first to recognize that at our current rate, it would be sensible to simply cancel Federal taxation. This would be an instant, decentralized stimulus that requires no new bureaucracy.

anewaccount2021··on GM Plans to Sell Only Zero-Emission Models by 2035
Is GM just a vaporware mill at this point?

Hummer pickup - CG rendered in commercial, no working vehicle exists

Cruise self-driving - numerous timelines posted and abandoned

GM/Nikola - a masterclass in vaporware, only called off after a third-party pulled back the curtain

Cadillac Flying Car - literally just a photoshop render
