aga98mtl··on Autonomous trucking is harder than autonomous rideshare
The issue with braking distance and jackknifing could be resolved with smaller trucks. The 18 wheeler we know is optimal because it maximize the cubic volume driven by one person. If you don't need the human driver, two smaller trucks might be better than one.
aga98mtl··on Ask HN: Favorite Podcast Episodes of 2023?
A nice followup to Twilight of the Æsir is to watch "The Northman" (2022). It depicts beautifully their worldview. It does not shy away from showing their dark side too.
aga98mtl··on Tesla blamed drivers for failures of parts it long knew were defective
The article makes a bunch of grandiose claim, but it never pins down an actual failure rate. It never compares it to other manufacturer. Some cars will have defects if you make millions of them.

The main claim seems to be that Tesla has higher defect rate, but it fails to make the case. Instead it veers into unrelated attacks on Musk.

aga98mtl··on The pro-Israel information war
I would be surprised if clever people were actually confused about that. Only a rich person like PG can afford to say the emperor has no clothes.
aga98mtl··on 90% of B2B YC companies have 50% of their revenue coming from other YC companies
Is this actually true? It sounds more like a claim by a random person.
aga98mtl··on Cocoa harvested by kids as young as 5 in Ghana: CBS News investigation
Is there even schooling available in those areas? People in rich countries fail to appreciate how bad the situation is in truly poor countries.
aga98mtl··on Ask HN: Did Elon/Twitter face any consequences after it stopped paying rent?
The plan is just to not pay and hope to settle for less then the total rent at some point in the future when the other party needs cash now. Meanwhile it helps with the cashflow.
aga98mtl··on Ask HN: Did Elon/Twitter face any consequences after it stopped paying rent?
The plan is to turn Twitter into a SuperApp like WeChat. WeChat is enormous in China because it combines social with payment. It is a proof of who you are and a way to pay. This does not exist currently in the West.
aga98mtl··on Amazon used algorithm to test how much it could raise prices: FTC
This theorical talk of monopolistic profits does fit the market reality. There are at least a dozen retailers for every type of product Amazon sells.

Can you provide an example of a product where Amazon enjoys a monopoly (or even something close to a monopoly)?

aga98mtl··on RealFill: Image completion using diffusion models
I do not agree with their usage of the word "Authentic".
aga98mtl··on Quebec Ministry of Cybersecurity and Digital Technology employee data leaked
Quebec has the best life expectancy in the americas. It's PISA scores are above the canadian average, which is itself close to best in the whole world.
aga98mtl··on Blaming Capitalists and Workers for Inflation
You can pick any macroeconomy textbook and you'll see it written plainly that raising quickly the monetary supply leads to inflation.

The central banks did this to avert an incredibly painful recession during COVID. It worked! It was the right move. However the price to pay is all this inflation once thing went back to normal.

aga98mtl··on Europe’s Ariane 6 rocket is turning into a space policy disaster
> At this point, any rocket program other than what SpaceX is doing are government job programs.

That is the thing: all rocket building organisations before SpaceX were actually government job programs. The goal was not to build cost efficient rockets. The goal was to maintain a large pool of trained aeronautic engineers and technicians for strategic defence purpose.

aga98mtl··on Giving the finger is a ‘God-given right’, Canadian judge rules
Michael, Ari and Frank Naccache are not typical Québécois names. I would guess they are either Mizrahi jewish or Lebanese.
aga98mtl··on Blowing holes in Seymour Hersh’s pipe dream
Russia could have done it in a “burn the ships, no way out but forward” type of move. Putin might have been worried by a coup attempt by a faction that wished to restore gas deliveries. There is a lot of very rich and very unhappy oligarchs in Russia.

That being said, it’s almost certainly done by NATO as a punishment to Germany for having gone against everyone else who told them these pipelines were a dangerous tool of russian influence/blackmail.

aga98mtl··on Japan was the future but it's stuck in the past
It works in the USA, Canada, Australia.
aga98mtl··on Winnebago’s Electric Motorhome Prototype
The F150 Lightning pricing seems great, but can you buy it at that price? (No) I think that the prices put out in press releases mean nothing if the manufacturers have no intention to deliver a meaningful amount, sold at MRSP, within a year.
aga98mtl··on Boris Yeltsin's visit to a suburban Houston supermarket in 1989 (2016)
Please elaborate. How would stopping banana cultivation help any of those countries?
aga98mtl··on I deleted all my social media 3 yrs ago and I hardcore regret it everyday
Facebook was a great way to keep in touch with friends that I don't really speak to anymore. Ex: People I went to college with 10 years ago. Now that FB is mostly unused, I have no idea what is happening to these people.
aga98mtl··on Do heat pumps work in cold climates?
In my part of Canada it is common to have mini-split (non-ducted) heat pumps, mainly for cooling. The salespeople like to say that you will save a lot on heating with a COP of 3. However the placement of the inside unit is always close to the ceiling, usually in the highest part of the house. This is perfect for cooling during summer. However during winter, it causes the upper part of the house to be hot and the floors to be cold. The basement resistive heaters have to compensate to maintain the target temperature. This means that these single head mini-split heat pumps cannot replace 100% of your heating and cannot provide the same level of comfort than resistive baseboards.
aga98mtl··on Twitter Layoffs Continue into 2023
They switched equity for debt. This is normal when taking private a publicly traded business. Both the lender and the borrower know what they are doing better than outside commenters who have never spent any time studying "going private" financing.
aga98mtl··on Unearthing a long-ignored African writing system
As far as we know, Senegal was never an arab colony or under direct control. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Senegal#Kingdoms_an...

Calling it an arab colony would be like saying Sweden was a roman colony because they use the roman script.

aga98mtl··on Tech execs who raise their kids tech-free or limit their screen time (2020)
> I don't think a lot of people dispute that more screen time is harmful.

I dispute it. Me and my friends played video games a lot, watched a lot of tv, etc. We all turned out fine. I think most people did the exact same thing and turned out fine too. Screen time = harm is an idea that flies in the face of the common reality lived by everyone born since 1980.

This idea sounds a lot like people who thought novels were dangerous, that comic books were dangerous, that rock and roll was dangerous, etc.

aga98mtl··on Twitter's status page shows “no incidents reported” for Dec. 28 global outage
What was the incident?
aga98mtl··on Stripe’s real pricing: a primer
No, the answer is that credit cards allow chargebacks for up to 180 days. Stripe or Paypal is betting on your honesty by allowing you to withdraw sooner. Stray out of their secret "safe" behavior allowed and they deem the risk too high.
aga98mtl··on Neuralink faces federal probe, employee backlash over animal tests
Millions of cows, sheep, chicken died today to feed humanity.
aga98mtl··on TIFU by using Stripe as a payment processor for my small business
Stripe like paypal is not to blame in this story. The problem is the credit card payment standard. Transactions can be charged back up to 180 days. This means that by giving the merchant the money right away, Stripe runs the risk that a transaction will be charged back and that the merchant wont have fund to cover it.

Stripe like any other processor runs an algo to determine the risk profile of each transaction to decide if you get the money immediately or not. If you have a sudden high ticket transaction, the odds this will be charged back are much higher. This is why they freeze that money up to 180 days.

It sucks, but it is how the credit card system works. Someone has to cover the chargeback risk.

aga98mtl··on Robertson vs. Torx screw drives (2021)
Here is video showing how Robertson stay on & straight VS Torx falling out easily: https://youtu.be/PMXOTRVYNiw?t=206
aga98mtl··on Success in Canada means moving to America
I mostly agree with the exception of Quebec. Much of canadianness is taking french-canadian symbols & culture and saying: "See we are not americans!"
aga98mtl··on No one expects young men to do anything and they are responding by doing nothing
> How do they undermine the norm?

Richer people have kids in their thirties, so the media is full of people in their twenties living it up. Poorer men have kids in their twenties and then they feel like losers for living the boring lifestyle of a responsible breadwinner. They want to copy the carefree lifestyle shown as "normal" by our culture.
