adamhearn··on Don’t use sugar substitutes for weight loss, World Health Organization advises
It seems like the average consumer of diet sweeteners is already likely to be overweight, diabetic, or have other ailments. This article seems highly sensationalized. For the average person, the risk of sugar impacting blood glucose levels seems far riskier than any side effect of a NSS
adamhearn··on Don’t use sugar substitutes for weight loss, World Health Organization advises
From my understanding the evidence of gut biome modification is weak, and would require a large volume consumption. Some NSS will cause temporary stomach upset if it’s your first few times consuming them. But I don’t think this has any long term impacts on gut health. Some NSS are healthy for your oral micro biome (erythritol for sure).

I was curious about this as well. It seems like arbitrary short names were “premium” without any value in their meaning.

Suggesting long term SERM use in replacement of a bio identical testosterone does not seem like the brightest idea. There have been reports of blurred vision, floaters in the eyes, and more (look on pubmed under just about any SERM, but specifically clomid).

In my opinion it would be much safer to suggest recombinant FSH and LH. The brain testes axis seems to have the least amount of atrophy over time from anecdotal experiences of those online and in a few case reports. I do not think HCG should be used long term due to the non-bio identical nature, but it is a good short term LH mimic if my memory serves me correctly. Would be a great addition to a TRT protocol.

adamhearn··on Proton is trying to become Google without your data
Genuine question, how is a browser tab different than thunderbird? Besides storing a local copy of mail (which is obviously a huge win), I don't see a big difference. If anything I like the web UI better.

However, for my uses I simply installed proton bridge + apple mail. It just works with all email services I use.

Currently I forward all my iCloud mail to my protonmail. Not sure if the aliases will stick around after cancelling a subscription however.

adamhearn··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
These should be used in moderation with doctors supervision, but alpha-yohimbine (rauwolscine), l-carnitine (high oral dose, or inject-able dose, GLP-1 agonists, fiber, fasting mimicking diets, and intermittent fasting. I would start by reading the circadian code however. Getting your sleep on track is the first step to weight loss.

adamhearn··on Alaska's one-house town, home to hundreds (2015)
The tunnel is the only way, besides helicopter to get to Whittier besides the port.

https://dot.alaska.gov/creg/whittiertunnel/faq.shtml

Why is Whittier so important to the Alaska Railroad?

From an economic and geographic standpoint, Whittier represents the Alaska Railroad's only viable freight interchange point for its barge service connecting Alaska with the lower 48 states and Canada. Seward and Anchorage are not viable port alternatives for barge interline service. Anchorage is not free of ice year-round and Seward requires traveling over a mountain pass at a 3% grade (it would take six locomotives to haul a heavy load from Seward versus two from Whittier). Whittier is a year-round, ice-free, deep-water port. It is located only 50 miles from Anchorage and has slight grades for trains and engines. For these reasons, all the Alaska Railroad's railcars, locomotives, and rail-borne freight must enter and depart via Whittier.

adamhearn··on Ask HN: What domain registrars take security seriously?
I have switched almost exclusively to Cloudflare. I really like the wholesale pricing and security. I'm sure you know this, but enable hardware or software 2FA.
adamhearn··on Ask HN: How did you correct your sleep patterns?
Melatonin and SR9009 can be used to hard set your circadian rhythm. Checkout Leo and Longevity on youtube.

Not sure why people are only recommending a tablet or iPad. Most parental control software should be able to do most of what you want. Blocking updates would probably require a bit of hackery.
adamhearn··on Ask HN: Email Service
ProtonMail is awesome! A bit on the high side pricing wise, especially for storage. I find a lot of value in it.

adamhearn··on Apple TV 4K Gets A12 Bionic
Apple TV is the best apple product I've ever owned. The UI is simple and works well. Airplay consistently outperforms every other 'casting' system I have tried. I have tried all the major brands of smart TV as well as every major brand of set top box.

I have also installed many for clients. Not one client has called me and asked me how to do something on their Apple TV. However, I have received many calls asking for help with Roku devices.

Have you found something that you like better than the Apple TV?
