Quality of life is more important than raw cash.

Americans have the weirdest ideas about Socialism. It is possible to have a state run healthcare system or nationalize the railways without devolving into Venezuela.
_wdh··on The problem of game developers receiving abusive messages
I'm not talking about shaming people, I think that if you want to have a community that doesn't have abuse then you need the admins to remove or ban the people who post abuse and threats.
_wdh··on The problem of game developers receiving abusive messages
Moderation is essential because by publicly making an example of trolls, you can change the culture to prevent it. It's the same theory as patching up broken windows to ensure that worse things don't happen.
_wdh··on Don't mine Bitcoin, mine Altcoins
Where did the data for the growth rate table come from? I can see that the original source is a reddit post but I can't find where the reddit post got it's numbers from.
_wdh··on Working in a Prison Goat Milk Farm
The problem with this is that allowing prison labour to be cheaper than free labour puts competitors out of business and gives incentives to the state and business lobbyists to arrest more people for the sake of profit instead of reformation or containment.
_wdh··on Show HN: StockNerd – A community for index fund investors
There's a good list of UK brokers here, most of which have Vanguard funds. http://monevator.com/compare-uk-cheapest-online-brokers/ Personally, I use Charles Stanley Direct and I don't have any complaints about them.

Make sure to stick it in an ISA account if possible to keep it tax free.

_wdh··on The closest I've ever come to falling for a Gmail phishing attack
That's scary. Would having 2FA enabled on your Gmail account protect you from this kind of attack?
_wdh··on Female coders are rated more highly than men, when nobody knows they're women
The research paper is here if anyone is interested: https://peerj.com/preprints/1733.pdf
_wdh··on SSDs lose data if left without power for just 7 days
It's a reference to a PG essay where he talks about how PR agencies often give press releases and news stories that are little more than hidden adverts by reporting selective truths: http://www.paulgraham.com/submarine.html
_wdh··on Chinese BitcoinExchange Bter hacked,$1.75M worth of cryptocurrency stolen
I don't understand why you would want to be your own bank at all? A proper bank will have some level of security as well as the scale to not fall over if a single branch is robbed. Surely being your own bank will not give you any of that security? You'll just doing extra work to make yourself a target?
_wdh··on Excoin exchange's Bitcoins stolen, will be shutting down
The language itself is probably fine but the fact that they are starting from scratch with what appears to be no input from security or financial professionals is a clear sign that there will be security holes
_wdh··on Chinese BitcoinExchange Bter hacked,$1.75M worth of cryptocurrency stolen
How many exchanges have been hacked at this point? We must be getting near double digits.
_wdh··on Ask HN: What do I use in place of Microsoft Clip Art now that it is dead?
The only site I know of that would vaguely fit the bill is https://openclipart.org/. However, it doesn't appear to support searching by image type or by dimension and as far as I can tell, it cannot be 100% guaranteed that you will have all SFW images.
_wdh··on A redesign of the Django websites
The new design reminds me of mint ice cream. In a good way.
_wdh··on BitQuest – Minecraft server with Bitcoin-denominated economy
It looks like it's been generated by http://overviewer.org/, I guess they've got a cronjob or something that runs that as a script and generates the html and then it looks like they use an <iframe> to load the map on the page. Really cool, makes me want to start running a minecraft server again.
_wdh··on BitQuest – Minecraft server with Bitcoin-denominated economy
This might be a stupid question, but does this mean that the number of Emeralds can that exist in the server is limited by the number of bitcoins that the owner has in the bank? I don't see how they can have a Minecraft world that has an infinite amount of space (and therefore infinite Emeralds) and support cashing out the Emeralds into bitcoins?
_wdh··on Backstabbr: A modern web interface for the classic board game Diplomacy
I'm not sure but I'd like to join in so we've got 2 people at least.
_wdh··on Feminist video-games talk pulled after massacre threat
By that logic, you can't judge any group in any way for doing anything because anything anyone does can be reduced to being an "un-hinged idiot".
_wdh··on Feminist video-games talk pulled after massacre threat
Do you have a source or owt for that? You can't just drop something like that without any evidence.
_wdh··on Feminist video-games talk pulled after massacre threat
If there are no leaders and no control, then surely the GG movement can only be defined by what it does under it's banner and it can't in any sane way be called "level headed" or "balanced"? If there's no way to moderate the GG members beyond consensus then there isn't any organisation or even a coherent goal beyond attacking perceived threats.

I'm not even sure what GG is trying to do by sending death threats to Anita and harassing Zoe Quinn. It just looks like they are doing it for it's own sake.

_wdh··on Feminist video-games talk pulled after massacre threat
What are the organizing points for GG that are level headed and respectful? I must admit that I doubt that this exists.
_wdh··on Feminist video-games talk pulled after massacre threat
You don't solve problems by ignoring them and hoping that they go away, you have to expose and stop it before it gets worse or they'll just move onto the next person.
_wdh··on Feminist video-games talk pulled after massacre threat
I really don't think anyone creates a marketing plan that involves fake death threats. That just doesn't make any sense, especially as she doesn't need to manufacture an outrage against her.
_wdh··on Is Bitcoin the Future of Money?
Ah, ok. My bad. How does it work then?
_wdh··on Is Bitcoin the Future of Money?
Doesn't bitcoin require you to download the whole blockchain before you can use it? What happens when new transactions are created faster than you can download them?
_wdh··on Amazon Will Pay You $5,000 to Quit Your Job
I would be amazed if anyone accepted this offer, it's not enough money to justify making every other job interview afterwards harder. I bet it's just a PR trick to make them look like better employers after the warehouse conditions were exposed.
_wdh··on The rise of Dogecoin, the internet's hottest cryptocurrency
But you'll never be able to earn as much as the average person who happened to start mining a month before you. The people who started first will always have an advantage over you. It all looks a bit like a pyramid scheme.
_wdh··on The rise of Dogecoin, the internet's hottest cryptocurrency
But why would I pay money to send a non-email when people have been trained for years to check their actual email? I'd be paying more for something worth less to me.
_wdh··on The rise of Dogecoin, the internet's hottest cryptocurrency
I'm not sure that there are any opportunities for micropayments. It seems like a solution looking for a problem.
