Wonnk13··on Memento mori
Sure- it started with me throwing up in August of 2016. I figured it was food poisoning and just kinda shrugged it off and ignored it for a couple months. I started to feel more fatigued and went to my doctor in October. We ran blood tests and saw that I was profoundly anemic. Did a stool analysis and they saw blood in there so that was enough to get a referral to a GI specialist and I had a colonoscopy and they took some biopsies.

After the biopsy popped, they immediately sent me in for a CT scan and I believe in surgery to have the tumor removed that same week. It was a wild ride.

This metastasis in the lung isn't going to be easy, but I'll crush it non the less.

Wonnk13··on Memento mori
Meh, I was worried I wouldn't have enough challenges in 2023. Thank you!
Wonnk13··on Memento mori
I'll check that out- thank you!
Wonnk13··on Memento mori
34 year old male triathlete here. As healthy/fit as can be. In 2016 I had a brief scare with stage 2 colon cancer- no clue where it came from, just hit by lightning. I just found out last week it's in my lung now, and I start chemo next week while everyone is getting laid off.

It sounds cliche, but man I plan on getting this tatoo'd on me if/when I recover. Life is too short and delicate. Meditate, read the classics, and fucking get after it HN because ya never when your time is up.

Sam Harris has a great quote about the fact that you almost never know when you're doing something for the last time. My last skydive, my last run, my last rejected PR :p It's a reminder to stay present and entirely focused, because the present moment is all we have and it's fleeting. I love you all.

Wonnk13··on All companies are fucked up
this was a big realization when I jumped from a scrappy startup to FAANG for two years. Was it all ice cream and unicorn farts? Absolutely not. Everything company has bullshit. It's your job to figure out if it's bs you can tolerate, or if it's not how changing jobs will alleviate it.
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: Have you noticed any side-effects from 100% work-from-home?
> So you end up in a situation where you have free time, but don't really have it, and you can't afford to focus on anything in case something more important pops up.

Nailed it. I have hobbies, but most occur on the weekend, or in the evening once or twice a week. When it's a slow week the empty time during the day hits me like a freight train- I've found myself slipping into a depression a few times.

Wonnk13··on Can anyone help with this nightmare?
/r/legaladvice ?
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: What are the biggest zombie tech companies that we don’t know of?
Epic- based out of Madison,WI. They make the EMR software for basically every hospital in the country.
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: Who is firing / laying off (June 2022)
I haven't heard of any layoffs in Boston, but some headcount freezes for the time being. I get the sense that most folks are taking a wait and see approach. Layoffs seems a bit aggressive right now, closer to Q4 who knows...
Wonnk13··on Poll: How are you doing currently?
No there's no "DMs" on HN as far as I know. I was tempted to add my mobile number, but being the public internet and all probably not the wisest choice.
Wonnk13··on Poll: How are you doing currently?
do you want to talk about it? or is there anyone you trust who you can reach out to?

is there anything we can do for you?

Wonnk13··on Ask HN: Do people at Google use Google things
Xoogler here: I'm sure if Memegen still exists, someone has made a post about this. Not to be glib, but Googlers are people too and share most of the frustrations about Google's product strategies. I joined right before Inbox was being sunset and there was a small, but very vocal contingent of folks who were upset by that. I myself was a member of the so called Inbox Resistance.

Maybe not a perfect metaphor, but I think of it as similar to how constituents continue to reelect their specific congressperson, but Congress as a whole has record low approval ratings. It's always another PA that's ruining Google ;)

Wonnk13··on Ask HN: What do you wish you had done/known in your 30s?
welp i'm 33 and single and this hits home so hard. My younger brother is 30 with two under two and he looks like hell most days. I can't imagine 3 hours sleep a night when i'm mid to late 30s. christ.
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: What are your tips for healthy living for WFH alone/single people?
I'm not the OP you're replying to, but if I may interject my own two cents: Climbing doesn't have to be a massive route on a 50ft wall. I don't enjoy bouldering, but it's great because it's a full body movement that trains both strength and flexibility. One thing I really love about climbing is the focus- you can't think about Slack notifications while dangling on a wall, the clarity of thought and just being in the present moment is second only to skydiving in my experience. Meditation works as well, but I enjoy the physical aspect.

Even just a few V0 / beginner problems get the blood flowing :)

Wonnk13··on Ask HN: What are your tips for healthy living for WFH alone/single people?
I think there's a massive difference between work from _home_ and remote work. It's not a great answer, but I solved it by expensing a membership to a nearby coworking space. It forces me out of the apartment, without the hassle and bs of commuting to a central office.
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: Where should I live?
I'd say Chicago hits three of their points, but fails 1. miserably.
Wonnk13··on Tell HN: Firefox users don't need another secondary browser
One thing I haven't figured out with Firefox. I have two profiles, one for personal stuff and one for my work. Having both profiles running at the same time requires two instances of the Firefox app to be running. Is that correct / is there anyway around that?
Wonnk13··on You are not your career/job
I'm not a woulda/coulda/shoulda kind of guy, but one of my few genuine regrets is skipping scheduled vacations for client fire drills and just generally not taking more time off in my 20s. I am thankful that my perspective changed before I lost my 30s as well.

HN certainly has a selection bias toward founders and early stage employees, but I feel very strongly that your career cannot be your sole source of meaning. Be well.

Wonnk13··on The housing market needs more condos
completely agree!!
Wonnk13··on The housing market needs more condos
I'm in the process of moving to Boston and it's utter insanity. Housing here is like something out of Kafka novel. Now I empathize with my friends who lived in SF pre-covid. Build, Build, Build!!

I do think it's important now more than ever with remote work to build more duplex / 3 bedroom condos. I'm 33 and I have no desire to move out to the burbs, but marrying and starting a family in a 2 bedroom condo isn't totally appealing to me.

Wonnk13··on Ask HN: Have you ever switched personal email providers?
I have not, but evaluating Proton mail and Fastmail is on my todo list.
Wonnk13··on Understanding LSM trees: What powers write-heavy databases (2020)
Alex Petrov has a couple lectures on this topic I think are worthwhile. And of course his whole book is a treasure.

Been meaning to work on some kind of LSM type hobby project in either Rust or Go.

Wonnk13··on Burgeoning bike cities emerge across America
Of course as soon as I move away they convert Milwaukee ave to a protected bike lane. I'm not crazy about the midwest overall, but I thought Chicago was one of (if not the most) bikeable city in the country. The combination of bike lanes, lakefront path, and grid layout make it very easy to get around on a bike. Damn now I miss that city :(
Wonnk13··on Burgeoning bike cities emerge across America
I'm considering moving back to Boston after a decade away. COL aside- I'm curious how much actual progress has been made with respect to proper bike infrastructure. Last time I lived there you were really risking your safety. The layout of the city just isn't conducive to cycling from what I remember.
Wonnk13··on Why is LinkedIn so cringe?
I swear to god this is something my father would repost. smh.
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: Favorite product that got shut down?
In my brief time there, I'm proud to say I was a member of the Inbox Resistance. Loved that app and tried to so hard not to refresh any browser once they turned it off internally. Goddam that one hurt.
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: Favorite product that got shut down?
I know it's a meme, but I genuinely miss Google Reader. It was so nice to have many sources of information aggregated into one app. Now it's fragmented across HN, Reddit, Substack, Twitter etc etc. I don't even bother following it all anymore.
Wonnk13··on Ulysses at 100: The Birth of the Modern
That's how I approached Gravity's Rainbow, but I still couldn't get through it.
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: Staying fit whilst working from home?
Enter the Kettlebell will fuck you up in the best way. I still do some barbell and dumbbell workouts, but kettlebell swings, presses and turkish getups if done properly with the right amount of weight are absolutely full body workouts.
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: What to do instead of drinking alcohol?
100% agree on the weed gummies.
