Wonnk13··on FDA approves first in class targeted therapy for metastatic pancreatic cancer
stage 4 colon cancer here... Pancreatic cancer is obviously a _very_ different disease, but when i was diagnosed just about a decade ago the conventional wisdom was that KRAS was basically undruggable. I'm KRAS 12D and very excited for future.

No it's not a cure, but this drug is the difference between someone's mother or father making it to one more Christmas, or Birthday, or other life milestone.

Wonnk13··on Discovery Loop
not that it really matters, but is he leaving Google?
Wonnk13··on The US grocery slowdown is real
I'm not surprised. K shaped economy, any sector that isn't high tech / AI is stagnant. It's rough out there. I've been saying since Covid, retailers have figured out some consumers aren't as price sensitive as previously thought. WholeFoods doesn't need to cut prices, but the lower tier grocery stores will really feel the cutbacks.
Wonnk13··on PgDog is funded and coming to a database near you
I wish them all the best. Supabase, Timescale, etc etc. there's a whole cottage industry of extending postgres to whatever you need.
Wonnk13··on Chasing Chicago's movable bridges (2014)
I don't know what it is about Chicago, but I find I have an insatiable curiosity about everything. I've never thought much about bridges, but when I'm in the loop I just stare at them sometimes. I love the architecture, the parks, the bike lanes it's just too bad it's in Illinois ha!
Wonnk13··on Chasing Chicago's movable bridges (2014)
Chicago in February is indistinguishable from Hoth.
Wonnk13··on Creating West Coast Buddhism (2024)
yea I'd +1 this. It's a real blindspot in the author's writing. I don't think you can write about meditation in the US without mentioning IMS. Headspace and all the other mcmindfulness apps that start with "focus on your breath" are all derived from Insight meditation. I've sat IMS, it's an incredible facility.
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: Good LLM Observability Platforms?
When I think of LLM / Agent observability I think of some combination of open telemetry and like Influxdb, but I don't think that's what your asking for?
Wonnk13··on Meta-analysis of 2.2M people: Loneliness increases mortality risk by 32%
nothing more than a n=1 anecdote, but I'm noticeably more depressed when my wife is in the office and I don't go in to a coworking space and/or do something with my friends after work.

Even as an introvert I can easily see if I didn't have a partner and access to friends and socialization I'd be significantly more likely to kill myself.

Before my mother started joining more retiree clubs I could literally see on her face how much more weathered and haggard she was. The isolation was physically visible on her face.

Wonnk13··on Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is coming to Playstation 5 on December 8th
wow; I'm not a gamer at all. never owned a console since my parents bought one for my brother and myself over two decades ago. I might (5-15% chance) pick up a ps5 just for flightsim and the new GTA. RIP xbox
Wonnk13··on Cormac McCarthy's tips on how to write a science paper (2019) [pdf]
Maybe I'm overstepping, but I think 1. you're right 2. that it's driven by insecurity. I've experienced many instances of people trying to "protect their knowledge" so to speak by hiding behind jargon.
Wonnk13··on Digg.com is back
I was a refugee of the Great Digg Migration to reddit some 14 or so years ago. old.reddit and adblockers as well as very aggressive curation of subreddits have kept it to an overall positive experience over the decade.

I think overall I'm just less enthusiastic about the internet; everytime I come back from a week or two of backpacking without internet connection I realize how overstimulated with inane bullshit we all are.

Wonnk13··on Fundamental Flaw of Hustle Culture
This is why I'm not a consultant. It's a generalization, but there's a kind of learned helplessness almost in the culture of the big4. Client has a new requirement, and someone says "oh guess it'll be an allnighter, i'll start ordering pizzas". Nah man, this is like four extra hours of work- push the deadline, or just work smarter.
Wonnk13··on White Mountain Direttissima
come back in the winter and ski Tucks! if ya aint freezin and dying it aint fun yet
Wonnk13··on White Mountain Direttissima
I love big stupid stuff like this. I didn't realize Ski the Whites has rebranded into White Mountain Ski co. Everyone shits on little 'ol new england, but the presidential range will chew you up as anyone who has thru hikes the AT will tell you. Suffering gives life meaning; go do hard stuff.
Wonnk13··on Google suffers data breach in ongoing Salesforce data theft attacks
Man I miss Buganizer... Even in 2017 Google was starting to smell like Accenture and Oracle. Glad i left before Jira was shoved down my throat.
Wonnk13··on In a high-stress work environment, prioritize relationships
I'm not sure I actually want to know, but what the hell is "goblin mode"?
Wonnk13··on Canon R5 Mk Ii Drops Pixel Shift High Res – Is Canon Missing the AI Big Picture?
Interesting- I have an OM-1 mk1 and similarly I've never found a decent use case for that mode.
Wonnk13··on Cancer rates are rising in young people
36 y/o male with stage 4 colon cancer. Diagnosed in 2016. Lifelong triathlete / healthy eater. I think it's easy to write this off and just better screening, but I think that's certainly a necessary, but not sufficient explanation.

I'm open to other ideas, but I have to imagine some of this is due to changes in our environment and food supply. plastics everywhere, pesticides in our food, pollution in the air.

Wonnk13··on Ask HN: What's the best book you've read so far in 2024?
Be Here Now: Ram Dass

Avadhuta Gita

The Art of Communicating: Thich Nhat Hanh

Open to other recs for non dual meditation / spirituality without a lot of religious dogma.

Wonnk13··on Andrew Huberman's Claims About Cannabis Annoy Drug Experts
Seems to be the nature of the beast sadly. Huberman, Attia, Ferris, to me all started in super niche subjects and now it's like anyone can come on. I've lost interest in almost all podcasts now because they've all converged into one hive mind of read the stoics, lift weights, do an ice bath, blah blah blah.
Wonnk13··on mRNA Cancer Vaccine Reprograms Immune System to Tackle Glioblastoma in 48 Hours
The Emperor of all Maladies
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: What are your best Emacs tips?
I would love to integrate my lsp setup into Org babel and get completions when writing code in org babel blocks.
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: Job Titles Solutions Architect vs. Architect
No, I'd agree with this. Your AEs / clients always want it done as fast and cheap as possible. I enjoy the variety of problems and clients, and honestly sometimes find working with our SWEs a bit pedantic. I have a Get Shit Done attitude.

I would say, the top maybe 5% of Sales Engineers/SAs (whatever you call them) do have a very deep expertise in one area and those are the folks who are trusted to get a deal done. I've done defense tech, adtech, and now databases. I've been the time to really go deep on databases and that's what I'm building my career around now.

Wonnk13··on The emotional trial of clinical trials: like online dating with death risk
35 year old stage 4 colon cancer patient here. Cannot emphasize enough his part about patient agency. It’s insane how much research and advocating for myself I’ve had to do.
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: What book have you given as a gift?
The Way to Love by Anthony Demello. Fits in your pocket and almost zen like koans. Little meditations on happiness and suffering without pushing too much religion down your throat.
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: What Are You Learning?
Is there a translation you’d recommend for someone who’s experienced in non dual meditation, but not Buddhism itself?
Wonnk13··on I upgraded my iBook G4 to have an SSD
Back in the day I removed the optical drive of my iBook g4 to add an ssd as a secondary drive. This is much more the hacker spirit. Awesome. I’m sure it’s just nostalgia, but I really miss the iBook / PowerBook lineup.
Wonnk13··on Tell HN: Old.reddit.com seems to be blocked for VPN users
I'm logged in to tailscale and can hit it just fine?
Wonnk13··on Ask HN: Has Reddit Turned into Facebook?
AITA for divorcing my wife after she took a bite of my apple?

For real, I just remind myself the average age of the people posting on the frontpage is probably 16. I use old.reddit.com and a handful of very niche subs and my reddit experience is mostly fine.
