Ultramanoid··on At least 23 confirmed or presumed dead after man sets fire to Kyoto anime studio
This is the well-known Kyoto Animation studio. ( KyoAni, 京都アニメーション )

Edit : The casualties seem to climb up to 24.

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20190718/k10011997421000.ht... ( Japanese. )

This is quite unprecedented.

Edit 2 : Prime Minister Abe offering condolences.

Life is hard enough in the anime industry these days as it is ( as several stories posted here have mentioned recently ), even in top notch studios like KyoAni.

Ultramanoid··on Avian malaria-mediated population decline of a widespread iconic bird species
> London’s house sparrows (Passer domesticus) have plummeted by 71% since 1995, with new research suggesting avian malaria could be to blame.
Ultramanoid··on WHO raises alarm as Congo traces contacts of first Ebola case in city of Goma
> It’s a crucial task to contain the spread of Ebola in Goma, home to more than 2 million people and the largest city to confirm a case of the disease since the epidemic here began nearly a year ago.
Ultramanoid··on Ask HN: Store short notes based on tags
Check https://tiddlywiki.com

It can be as complicated or as simple as you want to make it. Can be used locally only or deployed on a server. Single self-contained html file, can be encrypted too.

Ultramanoid··on Google shuts down its blog management tool just 10 months after launch
At this point, using any service from Google makes no sense, really. On top of many other reasons, zero trust in the service surviving ( or just reaching ! ) a two year period at least.

Ultramanoid··on Fixing Twitter's Design with uBlock Origin
Simply disabling javascript redirects to an older, much cleaner version. Also without massive use of white space.
Ultramanoid··on Facebook is embedding tracking data inside the photos you download
That's conflating two different problems. The issue of someone posting something without permission is one, and what Facebook does with what it distributes is another, entirely different second issue. We are discussing the second.

Is it dystopian to regulate that sites cannot host and distribute pedophile content for instance ? Regulations are needed, in the internet as much as anywhere else.

Ultramanoid··on Facebook is embedding tracking data inside the photos you download
Facebook has everything to do with the data they host, modify, and distribute.

And the current legal debate and regulations about it are long overdue.

Ultramanoid··on Facebook is embedding tracking data inside the photos you download
Wouldn't that depend on what they use this data for, what it is, and whether they keep it regardless of taking the file down if requested ? ( GDPR, etc. )
Ultramanoid··on Facebook is embedding tracking data inside the photos you download
It is not that simple. I do not use it. Yet someone can upload an image I send them, or my photograph without my knowledge. It needs to be strictly regulated.
Ultramanoid··on Facebook is embedding tracking data inside the photos you download
I don't use any of their services myself, nor do I suggest infringement.

I ask what is the legal situation for a copyright holder, given users likely are not aware of this data being added to a file; what the data exactly is, where or if this data is kept by them independently of the file itself, what is it used for, GDPR implications, etc.

Ultramanoid··on Facebook is embedding tracking data inside the photos you download
Metadata is data.
Ultramanoid··on Facebook is embedding tracking data inside the photos you download
If the photograph is copyrighted, how does this modification and embedding of tracking data by a third party affect the owner, if it does at all ?
Ultramanoid··on Facebook is embedding tracking data inside the photos you download
Therefore this is happening with Instagram as well, of course.

Thanks for the comment. I posted this with the original title as it was, they have changed it. I edited it just now, but I'm not going to keep checking to see if they change it again...

Ultramanoid··on Ask HN: Help to Delete a Google Account?
Answering myself and for anyone else who might benefit.

I thought I had reviewed ALL options in the Google account's data section in these past few hours, but there was an old device still listed under devices that I needed to remove just now.

Removing it did away also with the requirement to use it when deleting the account.

Good riddance !

Ultramanoid··on Uniqlo to switch from plastic to paper bags worldwide from Sept
Uniqlo's paper bags are quite nice and useful and you can see people reusing them quite a bit. For us at home, one of them certainly lasts several months at least, with all kinds of uses.

https://media.karousell.com/media/photos/products/2017/12/14...

Also :

> On September 1, stores in 12 markets worldwide will begin using eco-friendly paper bags made of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified recycled paper...

https://www.highsnobiety.com/p/uniqlo-reusable-bags/

Several years ago, Uniqlo also introduced a program to collect used clothes in their stores, both for donation and recycling.

You could do worse than this company is doing.

We're already literally breathing, eating, drinking, and pooping plastic. Time to stop using it.

Ultramanoid··on ‘National dignity’ rules passed in Taiwan
> Under current regulations, the mayors, county commissioners and government officials would need the approval of the Ministry of the Interior, in conjunction with the National Security Bureau, the Ministry of Justice and the Mainland Affairs Council’s review committee, before traveling to China.

Under the amendments, government officials would also be required, upon returning to Taiwan, to report to the agency they serve, with the mayors of special municipalities reporting to the Executive Yuan, and the mayors of other cities and county commissioners to the Ministry of the Interior.

Retired or former employees of government agencies associated with national defense, foreign affairs, technology, intelligence or China affairs agencies and who worked with national security, interests or secrets could also be required by the agency to report before and after travel to China, according to the amendments.

Ultramanoid··on Facebook Going Down Reveals Hidden 'Image May Contain' Message Left in Pictures
Exactly. There are suddenly dozens of articles everywhere about how images are automatically tagged with alt text over at Instagram, etc. If there is anything other than the current apparent need to use the phrase 'AI does this' I truly don't get it.
Ultramanoid··on Ask HN: Which laptop is best for writing?
HP makes laptops with very decent keyboards even in their cheapest tiers -- starting around 200-300$, Celeron, fanless, 4GB RAM, plenty for writing; they have several light but sturdy 11 inch models, and they play nice with Linux too.

Ultramanoid··on Ask HN: How to reliably register domains in Europe?
I mentioned France because EU regulations are better than elsewhere for customers, you also asked specifically about Europe. It's hard to find a bad review or a disgruntled customer anywhere, they consistently rank high in all articles or reports you might find about registrars / hosts, and they do not advertise themselves.

Also, they're not a newcomer, but a relatively big player ( despite the lack of advertising ) and independent, not part of one of those American umbrella companies with dozens of fake subcompanies who couldn't care less about individual cases.

I am based in Asia and even here they have an excellent reputation. I happened to find them at a time they were short on hands and releasing new products, their replies to my issues were slow and I was not happy about it -- full disclosure. Yet here I am recommending.

I was contacted directly by the area manager and offered compensation in the form of free services after I complained. In my experience they are serious, and I haven't found any better as yet.

Ultramanoid··on Ask HN: How to reliably register domains in Europe?
Not sure Google, whose favourite past time is shutting down every couple of years services millions use would be the best option particularly when absolute reliability is a requirement.

Ars Technica has a 'graveyard' mini site somewhere devoted to listing everything Google shuts down.

Ultramanoid··on Ask HN: How to reliably register domains in Europe?
Gandi.net is France-based and apparently one of the best in the business.

( I had a rough move at first with them, coming from using another service for a decade, but they've been solid so far. )
