ToniCipriani··on Bose has released API docs and opened the API for its EoL SoundTouch speakers
Arguably HP open-sourced webOS, but they did also got backlash because they killed that entire product line without warning.
ToniCipriani··on IPv6 just turned 30 and still hasn't taken over the world
Same here, I had a working IPv6 setup previously with my DSL provider, but now that I moved to a fibre connection, the new one refuses to support it.
ToniCipriani··on Kohler launches smart toilet camera
Came here looking for the Smartpipe reference, left satisfied.
ToniCipriani··on Add "fucking" to your Google searches to neutralize AI summaries
Doesn't look like there's an official way to, most seem to involve hacking the search bar engines or installing an extension.

ToniCipriani··on Frustrated YouTube viewers seek explanation for hour-long unskippable ads
SmartTube Next is GOAT.
ToniCipriani··on Lenovo has removed the TrackPoint nub from new ThinkPad laptops
IIRC there's some patent on how the pointer accelerates based on the pressure on the nub. This was why the other pointing stick devices (I've used ones from Toshiba, HP, Dell) don't work quite well as a Lenovo/IBM TrackPoint proper.
ToniCipriani··on ESET recommends Linux if your unsupported Windows 11 PC can't update from 10
The web version of Office apps still is not the same as the full-featured fat desktop version, which only runs on Windows and Mac OS.

You can't use the web version offline, they are not a PWA, for instance.

ToniCipriani··on Show HN: Icebreaking AI. A free tool to help you find close friends
So this is real-life bluffball.co.uk...

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

ToniCipriani··on Microsoft is finally removing the FAT32 partition size limit in Windows 11
One step forward several steps back though, with all the other terrible crap like copying your entire drive to OneDrive by default then attempting to make you subscribe when it fills up, adding all kinds of telemetry and ad tracking, shoving Copilot in your face whenever it can, just to name a few.
ToniCipriani··on Intel confirms no recall for Raptor Lake CPUs,microcode won't fix affected units
You mean Spectre? Heartbleed was the SSL bug.
ToniCipriani··on Windows 10 end of life could prompt torrent of e-waste
It made me think that Microsoft's Certified Refurbishers actually take a large hit on these, they are the most likely to have inventory that all of a sudden take a sharp loss of value, just because those didn't make the cutoff.
ToniCipriani··on Windows 10 end of life could prompt torrent of e-waste
Corporate has been replacing systems even without this anyways, most large companies lease the machines for their warranty life.
ToniCipriani··on SanDisk Extreme Pro failures result from design flaw, says researcher
Reminds me of my old Corsair Voyager. "Rugged" USB stick housed inside a fully rubber enclosure, which constantly causes the USB plug to snap off. Forgot how many times I had to RMA that thing.
ToniCipriani··on Windows 10 PC will soon be 'junk'
That started with Windows 10 actually, the moment they made it a free upgrade from 7/8/8.1.

I just installed Windows 10 on a VM and laptop, both are getting non-stop "suggestions" to "finish setting up my device" with Microsoft 365 subscriptions.

ToniCipriani··on Windows 10 PC will soon be 'junk'
You mean HDCP? I would be shocked if computers stopped getting IP addresses just because it doesn't have DRM, lol.
ToniCipriani··on Lenovo PC boss: 4 in 5 of our devices will be repairable by 2025
Entry level ThinkPads aren't really ThinkPads, the E-series in particular. Those ones were previously known as ThinkPad Edge, which were designed by a different team.
ToniCipriani··on OverflowAI
Gotta cash in the buzz word somehow.
ToniCipriani··on Reddit CEO slams moderators amid blackout, compares them to aristocracy
> Short term ad revenue comes from lurkers.

Except that's what startups are about these days, CEOs pump and dump the company onto Wall Street, then jump the crashing plane with their golden parachute.

ToniCipriani··on Major Reddit communities will go dark to protest threat to third-party apps
Sounds to me they want to double dip: charge you AND track you.
ToniCipriani··on What If We Replace Guns and Bullets with Bows and Arrows?
And precisely what is wrong with gun control and mixing it into partisan politics. It's easier to address the means but not the root cause on why the crime was committed in the first place.
ToniCipriani··on 22,000 smart thermostats in Colorado locked over ‘energy emergency’
Actually it's not just them. I have it for my local area hydro company in Canada, it's the same thing. I can't find where to cancel at all.

EDIT: So I did some digging, and it's confusing to say the least. In the app, it points you to the Google store page when you tap more info about the program. A search points to a page that tells you to contact your hydro company. On my hydro company's page, there is ZERO information about this, then a second search that landed me on Google Support page, which finally mentions the program is administered by some company in the US that is "partnered" with my hydro company, hidden deep inside the terms and conditions. And on that page, it says I actually have to call Google to unsubscribe.

ToniCipriani··on The Google Pixel 6a highlights the problem with the U.S. phone market
The real problem is, these features have been supported by old phones, they're part of wireless standards. Just that the carriers are creating artificial problems for you to switch phones and extend your contracts. My BlackBerry Priv sold directly by BlackBerry Canada has perfectly functional VoLTE when it is travelling, even with a prepaid SIM in Asia. Yet no carrier here will enable it, just because it wasn't sold by them.
ToniCipriani··on Apple’s Self Service Repair now available
> Automotive has a very strong track record of 3rd party parts being available shortly after genuine parts become hard to obtain or not-affordable

With the exception that the car doesn't throw error codes and disable the power windows if I use a third-party brake pad.

ToniCipriani··on My journey for dual displays with my M1 Pro Mac (2021)
I suppose it's the common knowledge that Mac OS doesn't support MST properly and author assumed it applied to Thunderbolt docks as well. This is on Apple for not implementing that, because it's not the hardware. Intel Macbooks work perfectly fine with regular DP Alt Mode docks in Boot Camp.
ToniCipriani··on DYMO's new label printer uses RFID tags to prevent the use of non-OEM paper
Is it though? My Canon printer takes chipped cartridges, but all the third party ones I buy come with it.
ToniCipriani··on How to grow monosodium glutamate (MSG) crystals
Uncle Roger's favourite science experiment.
ToniCipriani··on Flux Capacitor at O'Reilly Auto Parts
While you're there get some elbow grease to lubricate and seal the reservoir after topping up your blinker fluid.
ToniCipriani··on Valve is making a Switch-like portable gaming PC
If only it also had a Thunderbolt for an eGPU.
ToniCipriani··on Valve is making a Switch-like portable gaming PC
Seeing how there is now the Aya Neo and the Onenotebook Onexplayer, this might actually work. Have a handheld with a powerful enough laptop chip and a Thunderbolt, when at home it sits in an eGPU dock and use it like a traditional desktop, and on the go either connect the game controllers or a keyboard to use as a laptop.
ToniCipriani··on Canada Proposes New Regime to Block and Deindex Pirate Sites
IP laws is one thing, but such systems are rarely well implemented and almost always subject to abuse. Remember how the Verge tried to use YouTube copyright strikes to silence criticism of their horrible PC build video.
