TT-392··on The tooling ecosystem that adds joy to KiCad
It was really not that bad, it just looked scary, once you got past the first steps, it was fine. But I guess those first steps made a big difference in adoption
TT-392··on The tooling ecosystem that adds joy to KiCad
Being taken seriously by companies, getting the big investments to increase developement speed by lots. Actually overtaking its competitors in terms of features. A big usability overhaul. Fun stuff like that.
TT-392··on The tooling ecosystem that adds joy to KiCad
I really hope kicad gets the blender treatment some day. It has been a dream of mine to actually not have to use altium(or eagle, or orcad) when working for an EE company.
TT-392··on Phrases in computing that might need retiring
I do sometimes make pancakes.
TT-392··on Phrases in computing that might need retiring
Just because it is not a selling point, doesn't mean people don't still use the term a lot. I used to only know C, OOP is still a relatively new thing for me.
TT-392··on Phrases in computing that might need retiring
Object-Oriented Programming: "Luckily the industry doesn’t really use this term any more"

Wait really? What world are they living in? Am I just out of touch or something?

TT-392··on Phrases in computing that might need retiring
Oh, and I designed an UI for my smartwatch OS. For which I wrote everything from the ground up.
TT-392··on Phrases in computing that might need retiring
I am an EE, that works with microcontrollers on a daily basis. I know some html I play around with sdl and ncurses a bit, I can do some internet stuff. I am clearly a full stack dev right?
TT-392··on Ask HN: Do You Trust Grammarly?
Pretty sure the grammar / spelling correct is still miles away from grammarly (at least last time I tried it)
TT-392··on More invested in nuclear fusion in last 12 months than past decade
Maybe it is only 19 years in the future this time
TT-392··on Me and Monotropism: A unified theory of autism (2018)
To me I think that it is often just the case that I am not completely convinced yet. Debating something with someone can be a rather stressful social situation. Maybe I am not able to explain my point of view well, and just want to get out of this stressful situation. Also, when you actually think you might be wrong about something, you are expected to admit you are wrong, which basically feels like being pressured to announce that you have just changed your worldview. Making a decision like that, on the spot, in the middle of a stressful social situation, while you are not even sure about it yet, can be a very anxiety inducing situation.

Maybe it sounds a bit extreme to see admitting you are wrong as announcing you changing your worldview, but it just kinda feels like that for me, even if it is about something small.

Also, for me at least, I have this weird anxiety that, whenever I tell someone I made a decision, that I could never go back on that decision. It feels really weird to me. For the longest time I felt like I couldn't let anyone know I wanted to live a healthier lifestyle, because it somehow felt like, if I told anyone about it, I could never go back to comfort food and stuff like that. Not sure what that is all about, even my psychologist didn't understand it.

TT-392··on Electrical engineers on the brink of extinction threaten entire tech ecosystems
A lot of programmers sure came from the EE field
TT-392··on We found no evidence that Bionic Reading has a positive effect on reading speed
I find it increadibly hard to read, so I really hope it doesn't become a common thing. So I am kinda happy about these results.
TT-392··on Runway melts at London Luton airport as temperatures in UK near 40°C
I wouldn't be surprised, there are a lot of different asphalt mixes out there for different scenario. Idk specifically about temperature, but would't be surprised.
TT-392··on Heat wave kills more than 1,100 people in Spain and Portugal
Probably just heatstroke, pretty sure that is usually how people die from heat. Though, good chance that info just isn't out there.
TT-392··on Ask HN: Is there other software similar to Vim and Emacs?
And I guess kicad (pcb cad) is getting there.
TT-392··on Microsoft banned me from playing Minecraft until I provide personal info
I have multiple accounts, which I all transferred to microsoft accounts. They all got this message and had to be unlocked using a phone number. I wouldn't be surprised if they are straight up doing this to get phone numbers.
TT-392··on Electrical engineers on the brink of extinction threaten entire tech ecosystems
"While computer science course take-up had gone up by over 90 percent in the past 50 years, electrical engineering (EE) had declined by the same amount" Well yes, computer science used to be just a specialization of EE. Not that I don't think the EE scene is a little sad these days (I am currently an EE student) but I think this is important that we don't forget that EE has been split into a bunch of specializations.
TT-392··on Show HN: Piano Trainer – Learn piano scales, chords and more using MIDI
Idk if it is actually gonna work, I'll only know that after I try it. But right now, I notice that one of my biggest bottlenecks in reading music, is that, whenever there is a note that is quite a bit away from the clef, or other notes I played before, it takes me some time to recognize what note it is. Right now I am planning to make an app that shows me notes, I'll have to press that key as quickly as possible, and then the next note pops up. I then plan to have a bit of an anki type thing going on, where, if you get a note or chord right, and within a short amount of time, it takes longer for that same note or chord to show up again.

I am not expecting this to be a silver bullet for sightreading. There is still gonna have to be a lot of actual music reading involved, but it is the goal for this to eliminate a bottleneck and give me a bit of a head start. I just want to do more playing and less searching for now.

TT-392··on Show HN: Piano Trainer – Learn piano scales, chords and more using MIDI
I am in the exact same situation (getting back into playing piano after more than a decade of not doing it). But rn, it is just a very rough proof of concept I am making in pygame, I might make something more proper with actual decent code quality if it actually works, but I thought the same about an app I made to limit keyboard usage on pc (was having some hand health problems), which worked pretty well, but I never ended up making and releasing a better version of it. But maybe
TT-392··on Show HN: Piano Trainer – Learn piano scales, chords and more using MIDI
This is creepy, I just started writing a very similar app, end then I saw this appear on HN. Though mine is focused more on getting faster at sight reading sheet music, and idk if I'll ever actually release it to the public.
TT-392··on An experiment to test if Bionic Reading helps you read faster
I have dyslexia, and I can't scan read(if that is the right word), I have to basically read entire words. This stuff forces me to scan read, which means I just don't understand the text anymore.
TT-392··on NASA/APL Interstellar Probe Mission Architecture
Don't you usually have a battery you charge using the rtg's, so that you can deliver some real power when you need to do a manouvre?
TT-392··on A 60fps e-ink monitor prototype in action
I thought it was useful
TT-392··on Ask HN: Who Wants to Be Fired? (June 2022)
For a sec there I couldn't tell if you were a software dev, or if you put out actual fires for a living.
TT-392··on Bleh
I don't really get the disabling the NVIDIA non-free driver thing. Doesn't that driver just not support wayland in the first place?
TT-392··on Data Leak Provides a Look into China's Brutal Camp System
I assume they are talking about the fact that the official script of china is simplified Chinese (at least, I am pretty sure it is). Though I have no idea if this would mean that all official documents are in simplified chinese in practice.
TT-392··on A city fights back against heavyweight cars
The roads basically are max 80 km/h in japan, so you don't really need it.
TT-392··on Ask HN: How do you sync your computer’s development configurations/environment?
I manually scp config files whenever I set up a new pc (I should really set up somethin better)
TT-392··on The benefits of “low tech” user interfaces
Pretty sure this is often a cost saving measure, capacitive buttons can be less expensive than knobs, especially if they have to be waterproof.
