Shekelphile··on The next Raptor OpenPOWER systems are coming, but they won't be Power10
Can't imagine resorting to being this snarky in the defense of a flawed CPU micro architecture. It takes 30 seconds with a search engine to find benchmarks: https://www.phoronix.com/review/power9-epyc-xeon/3

It is, quite literally, half as performant as it's contemporaries while drawing more power. Beyond being 'open', these CPUs are duds and wastes of sand.

Shekelphile··on The next Raptor OpenPOWER systems are coming, but they won't be Power10
> Which parts of the POWER architecture design belong to yesterday? Specific examples would be great.

Is this a troll post? How about the fact that POWER9 is nearly 7 years old and was more than a generation behind it's competitors at the time it launched?

Shekelphile··on The next Raptor OpenPOWER systems are coming, but they won't be Power10
The claim that these CPUs are 'cutting edge' despite being based on the older POWER9 uarch is dubious as well. I suspect this is simply a marketing sham and the CPUs talos continues to ship will be rebrands of their current offering.

That said, if they have the original designs for these CPUs then it's not impossible for a startup to make meaningful improvements, but it almost certainly isn't going to be fabbed on a cutting edge node and certainly won't be competitive with anything else on the market (not that they were to begin with).

Shekelphile··on Replit permanently moves to paid hosting after 7 years of free service
It's not like paid services haven't done tons of rugpulls and unannounced changes over the last few years.
Shekelphile··on New pill helps Covid smell and taste loss fade quickly
I've had COVID 5 times since mid 2022 and have had total loss of taste and smell 3 times. The only reason I think two of those infections were mild is because they were almost back to back (3 infections within 10 weeks at the start of this year).

If that 250 mile battery maintained it's range for years and did so even in harsh conditions like cold weather and at normal highway speeds then it might be enough, but in reality all those things will wipe a good chunk of battery capacity away and those 250 mile range EVs will easily become 100 mile range in the real world.
Shekelphile··on Gnome developer proposes removing the X11 session
It has nothing to do with security and everything to do with hollowing out all generic functionality and passing it on to the compositor. In other words, the devs are lazy and went for a minimalist approach and now we all get to suffer.
Shekelphile··on Show HN: Firefox add-on to open YouTube videos in alternative front ends
Doesn’t libredirect already do this? Though I don’t use it for YouTube so I can’t say for sure
Shekelphile··on Valve says Counter-Strike 2 for macOS not happening, there aren't enough players
Source code for source 1 has been available for 20 years. It's been fully leaked multiple times and an official SDK with limited source is also available. There is no contradiction.
Shekelphile··on Valve says Counter-Strike 2 for macOS not happening, there aren't enough players
> Perhaps then refrain from telling everyone how easy it as when you have no idea what’s going on in the code.

I've been reverse engineering source engine games and modding them on and off for the last ~15 years, I almost certainly know more about it than you.

Shekelphile··on Valve says Counter-Strike 2 for macOS not happening, there aren't enough players
I miss the old flat style steam had when I was a kid - the simple vgui toolkit used in all their games of the era was simple and responsive. Now they have the same 2003 vgui elements in the app still but entire sections of the app have been redesigned with some CEF based web view thing that randomly likes to turn into a nonresponsive black blob on the screen until you force kill and restart or simply not appear on the screen at all.
Shekelphile··on Valve says Counter-Strike 2 for macOS not happening, there aren't enough players
> Put your money where your mouth is and write one. Just write one. If it's that easy, do it.

I can't because source 2's source code isn't available.

> Which is more likely - a company that dumps tons and tons of resources into Linux, Wine, DXVK, and put out the Steam deck didn't do this supposedly easy thing because they just don't care or could it be that they don't have the talent in house and wouldn't recoup their investment by doing it?

They don't have the talent? That's funny, considering Valve ported all their games to macOS many years before they ported to linux.

> In addition to the very high number of bugs in Apple's implementation

Many of those 'bugs' remain unfixed to maintain backwards compatibility, not because Apple doesn't want to fix them.

> the fact that it is officially deprecated sends a message to anyone wanting to do new development on MacOS “don't invest in OpenGL now as we could pull the rug under your feet” and it's done on purpose to push developers to Metal.

As it should be.

> So now they can only blame themselves if they're losing games because the developer doesn't want to invest in Metal either.

There's nothing to 'invest' in. Metal is by far the simplest low level graphics API out of all I've used and it would not be hard for valve to write a source 2 rendering backend for it (few days/weeks at most for an experienced dev). There's plenty of AAA games being properly ported to apple silicon now and in a year or two there will be many more. Valve intentionally withdrawing themselves from the ecosystem is purely out of spite.

Shekelphile··on Valve says Counter-Strike 2 for macOS not happening, there aren't enough players
I hope they don't. Source is already pretty much isa agnostic, it isn't difficult at all for them to set up the infrastructure to ship universal binaries for macOS and it just seems to be a power play on Valve's part.
Shekelphile··on Valve says Counter-Strike 2 for macOS not happening, there aren't enough players
> Also, there's no reason why Apple can't support OpenGL properly either, there “no reason besides the refusal to task someone to it”.

They do. OpenGL is deprecated, but still supported. If it wasn't supported at all it would not have worked on apple silicon macs.

Shekelphile··on Valve says Counter-Strike 2 for macOS not happening, there aren't enough players
Source 2 already has rendering backends for d3d9, 11, opengl and vulkan. There's no reason why they can't support metal besides a refusal to task someone to it.
Shekelphile··on Valve says Counter-Strike 2 for macOS not happening, there aren't enough players
I think it's more about not wanting to port the steam client to arm than it is about porting the game. There's source engine games ported to ppc and arm platforms after all.

> I play Dota from time to time on my M1 Max Macbook Pro and it runs more than fine.

Dota on macOS doesn't ship an arm binary and uses moltenVK to translate graphics api calls, it's on borrowed time if valve doesn't want to ship proper binaries as rosetta isn't gonna exist in a few years.

Shekelphile··on Valve says Counter-Strike 2 for macOS not happening, there aren't enough players
You can use normal APIs on consoles through translation layers (it works the same on the switch). The translation layers aren't the best so everyone just ends up using the proprietary 'API' in the end, which translates/gets inlined down to raw commands written to the GPU's command buffer at compile time.
Shekelphile··on Inflated rents, high interest and lack of supply create European housing crisis
Western liberals don't mind forcing people to live in those conditions as long as they're not white and left out of sight. They throw a tantrum every time Israel builds temporary housing for bedouins, for example.
Shekelphile··on Reduce MacBook's battery health below 80% to replace it for free under AppleCare
Everyone should get their money's worth from applecare. I have an iphone and apple watch running out at the end of the month - I plan on intentionally destroying both to get 'free' replacements that I can keep for another few years until I upgrade.
Shekelphile··on Richard Stallman reveals he has cancer in the GNU 40 Hacker Meeting talk [video]
How can this be viewed as a provocation, unless your views align with the regimes who people like Che faught against?

Regardless of your views on 'communism' (and I say that as someone who will quickly detest any of those governments at that time in history), they faught against overtly fascist regimes that trampled on all personal freedoms and routinely rounded up dissidents to be summarily executed. RMS 'not endorsing' fighting for personal freedom is an endorsement of the status quo of that era, where governments like Pinochets would literally kidnap dissidents, sedate them, throw them into the cargo holds of 747s and dump them out over the ocean from tens of thousands of feet in the air.

Shekelphile··on Richard Stallman reveals he has cancer in the GNU 40 Hacker Meeting talk [video]
Gonna go out on a limb here and say that Che almost certainly did not kill anywhere near the same number of 'innocent people' as the overtly fascist south american heads of state from the 1950s-1990s did, namely Bautista, Barrientos, Pinochet, Videla, Stroessner.
Shekelphile··on Layoffs at Epic
Tim is great. No bullshit corporatespeak spinning this as a good thing for the laid off people, and offering 6 months severance with paid healthcare is top notch compared to what other companies have done to their employees during layoffs (such as promising 3 months of severance pay and then rugpulling and paying them nothing).
Shekelphile··on Pixel 8 leak promises 7 years of OS updates
> darling business unit

It's HTC. Google poached thousands of employees from HTC and it shows in the subpar build and component quality.

Shekelphile··on Pixel 8 leak promises 7 years of OS updates
It is if you care about ANC and convenience of use. At home wired is obviously king :)
Shekelphile··on Pixel 8 leak promises 7 years of OS updates
Lets be real here, you probably cannot afford a new phone if you have to cheap out with wired headphones/earbuds on a mobile device in 2023.

> The Nexus 7's storage degraded, which rendered the device unusably slow. I thought it was the upgrade to the next version of Android that did it, but downgrading it did not fix the issue. There's been some workarounds that made it slightly more usable but ultimately it was a serious hardware defect that made it unbearably slow to use even with these workarounds.

It's worse these days than in the nexus days. Google slaps extremely cheap NAND into their phones and it ends up failing after 2-3 years of daily use. Everyone I know that uses pixel phones either cycles through a new phone yearly or gets bitten by a sudden hardware failure and swears off the brand entirely.

Shekelphile··on Show HN: I rewrote the 1990's LambdaMOO server
Good luck. As someone who used to work on a lambda-derived MUD it's great to see a little life left in that community. The original server was horribly outdated even 20 years ago.

I also found this project randomly on github at one point, not sure how far along it got to being usable: https://github.com/verement/etamoo

Shekelphile··on The path to detecting extraterrestrial life with astrophotonics
We don't (can't) look for them. Current telescopes are not big enough and governments refuse to pony up the money for anything better. Even JWST was a disaster in terms of finances and time, there's zero chance anyone is going to pay 100-1000x as much for something better.

That's the entire point of the headline. Scientists are forced to search for 'wunderwaffe' solutions to make these observations.

Shekelphile··on The path to detecting extraterrestrial life with astrophotonics
> Our understanding of astrochemestry is still limited enough, that we cannot say with confidence that a given signature requires a biotic process to produce.

It will always be possible to find a new extreme edge case to deny far easier and more common processes that leave around biosignatures, it's the exact same rhetoric used to handwave away the methane in the martian atmosphere.
