Shekelphile··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
They're cutting prices because they want to cannabalize the market for people using models like deepseek via API as well as people paying for anthropic subs.

When they cut prices on luna the first time around they took (literally) millions of users from anthropic.

Shekelphile··on Claude Opus 5.5
Footnote on their pricing page says:

> Cache hits and refreshes on Claude Opus 5.5 are priced at 0.05x the base input price.

If they do the same for Haiku and Sonnet 5.5 then we should also see 5c/mtok and 10c/mtok cache read for those models, respectively. Still too high for Haiku IMO, Luna is 2c/mtok.

Shekelphile··on MiMo-v2.6-Pro: Intelligence, Performance and Price Analysis
I mean, why would you? Chinese models through an API are more expensive than any subsidized subscription and the only one offering a transparent subsidy (opencode) only gives you $15 of credit on any relevant models, and still has a 5 hour limit.

The answer is just a second $20 subscription.

Shekelphile··on MiMo-v2.6-Pro: Intelligence, Performance and Price Analysis
Changing pricing buried in docs (which they didn't actually do when they started switching every model to $15 limit 2 months ago BTW, they only did this once people noticed and called it out) without notifying users is the definition of a rugpull.
Shekelphile··on MiMo-v2.6-Pro: Intelligence, Performance and Price Analysis
All of the chinese labs have been overfitting on benchmark data to game the results for a while now - MiMo and Deepseek are not anywhere near frontier and mostly compete with models like Luna - which they are still worse than.

There isn't much compelling reason to use these unless you are just averse to giving money to openai/altman. A $20 codex sub gives you ~$150 of luna use per weekly limit, while there isn't any good subsidized options for chinese models at all (and the few who were subsidizing, like opencode, rugpulled by reducing monthly limit to $60 to $15 with no notice to users).

Shekelphile··on MiMo v2.6
No chinese lab has caught up yet. They've tried to fake it by distilling and overfitting on benchmarks to make their models look better than they are, the 'best' models available from chinese labs right now (GLM 5.3 and Kimi K3) fall apart completely when you try to do real work with them. K3 is especially embarrassing because it is larger than Mythos yet performs worse than opus 5 and 5.6 sol in benchmarks they haven't been able to fake yet.
Shekelphile··on Grok 4.7
> it's also token efficient and cheaper than gpt 5.6.

Deepswe results show that grok 4.6 is more expensive per-task and consistently scores worse than: luna xhigh, glm 5.3, astra low, sol high/xhigh, opus 5 medium.

Grok also used almost 3x as many tokens/turns to complete tasks than all of those models (besides luna), so it takes way more time to complete a task.

There isn't much reason to use Grok at all, it's gotten better but it's still worse than every other player in the field, which shouldn't be a surprise considering until about a year ago they were just buying tokens from other providers and pretending it was their own model.

With gpt-6 luna and sol coming tomorrow it's going to look even worse too, especially if new luna retains the same dirt cheap pricing that 5.6 luna has.

Shekelphile··on Googlebook
> Kompanio Ultra Chromebooks are faster

Lol. There is zero chance the low end mobile phone SoC shipped in those is remotely as fast as a six year old M1. Even flagship SoCs from qualcomm and samsung still do not exceed it's performance yet.

Shekelphile··on Googlebook
> Why pay $500-700 for Mac Book Neo for the same low processing power experience that you can get on a Googlebook for half the price?

What makes you think a googlebook will be half the price of a macbook neo?

Also, a used M1 macbook air is $300 on swappa/ebay and will be even better than the neo anyway. It's still more performant than every other non-Apple ARM based laptop/chromebook on the market and will have far superior build quality.

Shekelphile··on Googlebook
A plastic macbook lookalike with no ports, a mobile phone OS, a 1366x768 display and probably the cheapest SoC they can scrounge from the parts bin.

This thing, like all other google/android products, will be DOA, and the ones actually duped into buying one will be left with a paperweight in a year or two when the cheap hardware inevitably breaks.

Shekelphile··on When Dawkins met Claude – Could this AI be conscious?
> My mental scenario is one of these guys trying to go into the women's restroom they are now legally obligated to use, and a whole bunch of bystanders bringing violence to the table to prevent it.

That's the desired outcome for them. They want us to either die or comply.

Shekelphile··on Tesla’s 4680 battery supply chain collapses as partner writes down deal by 99%
tbh, it still isn't economically feasible. spacex 'cheated' to achieving reuse by just making the the entire plumbing and engine assembly bolt-on to the lower stage on F9 and they just replace that every time one is 'reused'. to my knowledge, they still haven't reused an engine without either replacing the nozzle, turbopumps or both, which are so expensive that reuse might actually cost them more money in the end for the benefit of faster turnaround times in years where launches are booked heavily.
Shekelphile··on Phoenix: A modern X server written from scratch in Zig
Does this mean we can finally be done with the farce of pretending that Wayland is a serious contender for replacing X11?
Shekelphile··on A time-travelling door bug in Half Life 2
It was publicly released in 2013 and you can enable it with -vr in args IIRC. Not sure if it would work with modern VR hardware since steamvr wasn't a thing back then.
Shekelphile··on Google Pixel's most dangerous bug: failing to call 911
This doesn't surprise me. Google still refuses to fix basic bugs in the distribution of android used in pixel devices. The alarm bug (where alarms will not work for days/weeks at a time, randomly) has existed since the pixel 1 and still affects the current generation of pixel phones.
Shekelphile··on Earth was born dry until a cosmic collision made it a blue planet
> when we drain the planet dry of easily-accessible fossil fuels we’ve deprived any successor civilization of its opportunity to escape the planet.

There will be no successor civilization to humans. Earth won't be able to support multicellular life in a few hundred million years due to the sun becoming gradually more luminous over time, resulting in higher surface temperatures that will eventually culminate in a runaway greenhouse happening, as it already has on Venus. Due to human-driven climate change effects this event will certainly happen much sooner (<100m years) as well, which is simply not enough time for another intelligent species to evolve after a large-scale extinction event.

Even if life evolving on earth was an incredibly rare event the chance of such circumstances not happening elsewhere even in our own galaxy is infinitely small - there are trillions of planets and 100b+ stars. On top of that there are 100s of billions of galaxies within the observable universe as well.

Shekelphile··on USB-C for Lightning iPhones
> I think you need a pretty good amount of willful naivety to think that Apple didn’t make the switch with such coincidental timing to EU law changes purely out of the love of their customers.

The designs are finalized years in advance. Apple would have made the choice to ship USB-C before the EU mandate was even proposed.

Shekelphile··on USB-C for Lightning iPhones
I have no clue how you're drawing that conclusion. The lightning connector is indisputably more durable than USB-C and failures of lightning ports outside of extreme abuse is pretty much unheard of.
Shekelphile··on Steam, Itch.io are pulling ‘porn’ games. Critics say it's a slippery slope
They’re being forced to remove games that are essentially anime CSAM. Payment processors shouldn’t need to be stepping up, but these platforms don’t bother to curate or moderate content so their hands are being forced.
Shekelphile··on Valve confirms credit card companies pressured it to delist certain adult games
there are already hundreds, if not thousands of anime lolicon porn games on steam.

the people making a stink about this know this but are pretending that they don't because it would overtly out them as pedophiles.

Shekelphile··on Valve confirms credit card companies pressured it to delist certain adult games
It is a shame that it takes payment processors to get Valve to do even the bare minimum curation of their store. IMO the thousands of outright bad games and ai slop asset flips and weirdo porn that verges on outright illegal content in many countries should have never been allowed in the first place. All of this leads back to various executives at Valve essentially doing no actual work and refusing to hire anybody because a huge part of their corporate culture is to keep headcount low while chasing constant growth.
Shekelphile··on New EV charging feature could make apps and cards obsolete
This is ridiculous and unnecessary.

I can always pay cash or swipe a card at a gas pump, why not the same at an EV charger? This is something that doesn't need to be changed.

Shekelphile··on GitHub MCP exploited: Accessing private repositories via MCP
No, what you're seeing here is that the underlying model was trained with private repo data from github en masse - which would only have happened if MS had provided it in the first place.

MS also never respected this in the first place, exposing closed source and dubiously licensed code used in training copilot was one of the first thing that happened when it was first made available.

Shekelphile··on GitHub MCP exploited: Accessing private repositories via MCP
Yes. Opt-outs like that are almost never actually respected in practice.

And as the OP shows, microsoft is intentionally giving away private repo access to outside actors for the purpose of training LLMs.

Shekelphile··on Android's new "feminine" design language
So they've fully capitulated and just copied Apple's UI/UX fully now.

Why exactly would anyone buy an android when you get UX that is a poorly made clone of the real thing, much worse battery life (despite batteries on mid-range and high-end android phones being 30% larger than apple's), far worse software support, and on top of that you're expected to pay the same premium price that an iPhone already commands?

What a joke. Within ten years the only people left using these android devices will be third world.

Shekelphile··on Wikipedia: Lamest Edit Wars
I feel like this page has barely changed since I last saw it, more than ten years ago. I suppose it would be much longer if it included more recent edit wars, especially since there always seems to be one over the usage of a trans persons preferred name, or the gulf of mexico page.
Shekelphile··on Sycophancy in GPT-4o
Grok could capture the entire 'market' and OpenAI would never feel it, because all grok is under the hood is a giant API bill to OpenAI.
Shekelphile··on Manufactured consensus on x.com
There were more than a few cases at the time around acquisition where Musk publicly got into autistic manbaby slapfights with people on twitter and ended up banning them publicly. Presumably he is choosing to avoid doing this to mask what is happening to the victim and to avoid more bad press about it - it directly harms his thinly veiled persona as a free speech absolutist.
