S_A_P··on The tank is dead: Long live the javelin, the switchblade, the ... ?
The tank is now an unmanned flying drone- so it is just a change of form factor.
S_A_P··on Jango; Free Music Streaming
I’ve had a jango account since 2006(?) maybe. I haven’t logged in or otherwise used it since about then either but I still get emails from them on occasion. Maybe I should check it out again and (shameless plug) stream some stupid American pig tracks
S_A_P··on A few things to know before stealing my 914
I agree. I imagine a lot of this is hyperbole rooted in truth. As I have gotten older and had more of an interest in doing my own wrenching I realize half the battle is having the right tools for the job. In most cases that means a good way to lift your vehicle (would love a real lift in my garage) and the appropriate tools to remove or reinstall various items in the car. Having this can mean the difference between a nightmare or relatively easy job. Of course all bets are off if you live where they salt roads in the winter.

Edit. Also not being afraid to remove any and all panels required to access something also helps tremendously. So If you own an Audi be prepared to remove the front clip of the car. Google Audi service position for the hairy details.

S_A_P··on The Uselessness of Phenylephrine
The fact that I am here is 100% due to the medical science of the 1970s. I was born with a hole in my heart. The fact that I lived past 19 is due to the medical science of the late 1990s. That same area of my heart had a short circuit that would sporadically cause 200bpm+ heart rates and cause me to nearly pass out. It’s called Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome. I had a cardiac ablation which 100% cured me of that. The fact that I am here now is because of modern medicine. I just completed colon cancer treatment for which I lost a foot of colon and had chemotherapy. As I write this I can’t believe that I am not even listing everything that has happened to me and considered myself generally healthy. Anyway medicine in the US is definitely responsible for my still being alive. I’m sure other health care systems would have kept me alive too but it is pure speculation and luck I suppose. I could just as easily have gotten a bad doctor and not been so lucky.
S_A_P··on Johns Hopkins Beast
This thing probably cost 1000x a roomba to build. Current supply chain issues aside this ‘future’ tech is now accessible to most of the population now.
S_A_P··on Are legendary music catalogues worth the money?
I remember xm used to have a 40s and 50s channel. Of course that was 20 years ago in its infancy. IANAL, but an interesting case could be made that by the ‘public’ (radio) no longer broadcasting music that they are no longer asserting their copyright. Similar to trademarks that are no longer defended. If there are satellite and or terrestrial radio stations playing something the copyright expires.
S_A_P··on To avoid Finland’s tax a 1,000HP imported Hennessey RAM is limited to 55MPH
At 272k plus taxes I don’t think we need to worry about this being a peoples car. I think that all manufacturers realize that ICE is on the way out. The new generation of electric cars on the horizon are very compelling and seem to be capable of even better performance than ICE vehicles. The Lucid Air and Rivian truck( along with Tesla and traditional car makers) are bringing prices down more quickly than I personally expected. I think that FCA(now stellantis) hellcatting all the cars was/is a great way to send off the old technology. Making high profit vehicles like this is also helping stellantis bankroll the transition to electric cars.

I say all of that to say that big gas guzzler vehicles are an easy target for judgement but in the scheme of things they’re about 29% of CO2 emissions. Cars are getting more fuel efficient and the average car is not a supercharged v8.

Also what’s wrong with the fetishization of cars? There is a lot to geek out to in vehicle engineering. Not all cars are a giant eff you to the planet. Just like not every computer is a 500gpu crypto miner.

S_A_P··on Roland 50 Studio
Long time 808/606/303 owner and the Roland emulations are ok. The best 303 emulation I’ve used is the Audiorealism bassline. https://www.audiorealism.se/ Keep in mind I’m not a huge 303 fan personally.

I’ve got a Roland cloud subscription and I definitely think it’s useful and way more convenient than vintage gear approaching 50 years of age. I also have the arturia v-collection and think this last update made the Roland synths (Jupiter and Juno’s) sound way more alive and better imho than the Roland versions. They are both pretty good though. You can get the same dsp emulation in the Roland boutiques/Aira as well if you want hardware knobs to twiddle.

Iirc the 808 and 909 in rebirth were sample based. The 303 was nice and squelchy but not quite a perfect emulation. Lots of fun to play with though. I remember spending hours in college playing with rebirth.

S_A_P··on I am the healthiest person I know, and I got cancer
I’m 45 and I’m just now half way through my last chemo treatment for colon cancer. I would not say I’m you for cancer but definitely on the younger end of the spectrum for this type of cancer. I probably wouldn’t have gotten the colonoscopy that found the cancer had I not been lucky enough for the cancer to cause an infection where gut bacteria passed through my colon and made me extremely sick. I treated that with antibiotics and got a colonoscopy.

Results were that it was stage 3 c as I had 4 lymph nodes affected. The first step was surgery and about 12”/30cm of my colon was removed right where it meets the small intestine. This was the most difficult surgery I have been through and happens during the delta surge last summer. That means I couldn’t have visitors for the week I was in recovery.

Next up was surgery for a port after 3 weeks of healing. That went in my right shoulder near my collar bone with an iv line to my jugular. Once that healed started the chemo…

I didn’t take to chemo very well at first and I had a severe reaction to one of the drugs and landed in the hospital again for a few days. They could not figure out what was really happening but I basically had severe chest pain and jaw pain. They suspected heart/cardio problems and did a cardiac cath which came back normal thankfully. The fix was to reduce the dose of that particular drug by half. As time wore on the other drug in the cocktail started causing neuropathy in my fingers, feet and teeth/gums. Picture your finger tips always asleep. That can last for up 2 years but in some cases is permanent.

Now that I’m on the other side of the diagnosis and treatment I still have the post treatment scan. Typically colon cancer makes its was up to the lungs and brain if left unchecked. I get that scan mid April. To me that is the scariest part. I think it would be a huge gut punch to find out that it spread even after surgery and chemo.

As for life post treatment there are adjustments I have had to make: While I used to like spicy food my colon has decided that spice is a laxative now and usually sends me to the restroom within 2 hours. I have to plan my coffee intake with meetings. I have some days when things seem normal and the others when I’m going to the rest room 4-6 times per day.

In my 30s I was in marathon shape until I severely broke my foot at 38. I have slowly gotten out of shape since. I think this was a bit of a lifestyle reminder for me so the plan is get back in shape and check my diet.

I have quit alcohol for treatment so I’m going on about 9 months with no drinking. I don’t know if I will continue abstaining or not. I am certain that had I not had that infection I wouldn’t have gotten a colonoscopy. I think that’s the takeaway for me. Get your colons checked folks. Age 40 is the new recommendation my doc has mentioned.

S_A_P··on Tell HN: YouTube and how my wife lost 7 years of work
YouTube deleted my account a few months ago. The reason was totally unfounded and I had no recourse. I’m pretty certain some AI flagged my account and instead of a sensible approach like 1) notify the user that something they did was flagged. 2) point to the instance where the supposed bad behavior happened and allow review/context by humans 3) see that my YouTube account was 12-13 years old and had only a handful of personal videos and 1-2 public videos and that I have a long history of not behaving badly

Instead I got a flippant response to my query as to why it was deleted and I quote: “Yeah I’m going to go ahead and deny your claim”.

As far as I’m concerned the less Google I have in my life from now on the better. While I don’t think that the other options are much better, this incident has changed me from having not much of an opinion on Google to having a pretty seething dislike for them.

S_A_P··on A brief history of gasoline: Searching for the magic bullet
Jalopnik used to be full of car enthusiasts- this doesnt seem to be the case anymore. This guy has a decidedly anti big oil slant. Thats fine. I think big oil does need to be replaced by something renewable and cleaner, but I still dont really enjoy reading his series. Its a bit smug and virtuous for me. There are still a few good writers at Jalopnik. Jason Torchinsky, despite his extreme desire to see tesla/elon musk burn writes a lot of great stuff about the quirks of cars that you may otherwise overlook. David Tracy seems to be a glutton for the punishment that only rusty jeeps can supply. Mercedes Streeter has had a few articles I liked. By and large it seems that most of the regular staff writers hate cars, or at least cars that arent non tesla electrics/hybrids.

Now about leaded fuel. Back before say, 1970ish a lot of gas had an octane rating of between 40-70[1]. Refining oil was still an emerging technology. That being the case it seems like one of the by products of Natural Gas Liquids(called Natural Gasoline) was being used as pump gas. Lets pretend that you built a time machine and took your brand new 2022 camry with you to have a laugh that a consumer commuter car would be a super car back in the 1940s. If you managed to find fuel that was unleaded you would likely do irreversible engine damage on the first tank. If you filled with leaded, your catalytic converter would foul and then you would need to remove it to run leaded fuel. Lead was an additive because it prevents detonation in sub-optimal gas. After lead was outlawed they started boosting octane to do the same function. Fuel sucked, and it wasnt until lead was outlawed that refining higher quality fuels on a large scale became possible. I see the clean air act as a great example of successful regulation.

S_A_P··on When my wife developed Alzheimer’s, the story of our marriage kept us connected
True love is something that takes work. Sure some people mesh better than others, and if you picked your mate mostly on aesthetics you may realize that having someone you like to look at is not the way to sustain a multi decade relationship. I think when it comes to a partner, you have to just decide that you are always willing to meet them where they are. Its not always where you want them to be either. The flipside of course is that your partner should feel the same way and be willing to endure your ups and downs
S_A_P··on America Will Collapse by 2025 (2010)
Ahh the early days of clickbait. I wonder if the author was hoping to stop the demise or just wanted to be able to scream "see I told you so!" as the world burns.
S_A_P··on Colors in movies and TV: What happened to them?
The movie traffic was one of the first I noticed that made use of this. However it was kind of a cool effect. Suburban home shots were a cool blue, and desert and outdoor were more reddish. I want to say they did this with characters as well.
S_A_P··on Logging as a code smell
Logging is one of many ways to debug and capture behavior in large systems. Logging is not inherently bad and isn’t an event bus just another layer or two of indirection of a logger? This post just demonstrated a logger abstraction that is still capturing and logging activities. Sort of anyway. Code smell is when your logs aren’t helpful
S_A_P··on How to design a house to last 1000 years
As someone who is living in a generational home this article brings several questions to mind. (But it’s a fun thought experiment)

1) presumably this home isn’t going to be built by someone in their 20s and will likely be built by someone who has accumulated some wealth. That puts them at 30-60 years old. Is the 1000 year benchmark because you want to pass the home down to your kids? 2) if so, do you think they will like your design choices? Will your kids kids? 3) since this is likely to be built by someone who is affluent it will likely be built somewhere with a high land value. Do you think that there is a good chance that the land won’t be cleared and something else built in its place in the next 100 years? This being the case it seems that the target of 1000 years is probably 10x too long. A home built to last 100 years is likely to be the better investment. You’re bound to save big on material cost and building codes are likely going to dictate the correct wind/seismic strength anyway. If you pass it down to your kids they will be able to level and rebuild or refurbish the home to meet their needs more easily as well.

I live in a home that was passed down to us and we are going to remodel it as it was built for very different circumstances. Having to do this with some overbuilt fortress would likely triple the cost to remodel and severely limit the labor pool to artisans and craftsmen. I could see a building that wasn’t a home shooting for 1000 year lifespans (say a library or school or maybe high rise) but even that seems overkill to me.

S_A_P··on Airports Had to Deal With Over 2B Litres of Airplane Toilet Waste in 2019
I like articles like this that encourage you to think about details that are often missed when it comes to making everyday life run smoothly. I also get that it makes sense to time box it to a year to give a sense of scale to the problem. However the headline is written in a click bait-ey way that rubs me the wrong way. I know you gotta do it for the clicks and all, but I think we need to find a better way to capture the attention of readers.
S_A_P··on Microsoft buys Xandr, AT&T’s advanced advertising business
I dont recall offhand, it was purchased in 2020 I believe, but could be 2019. Its a midrange model.
S_A_P··on Microsoft buys Xandr, AT&T’s advanced advertising business
I dont know that its hyperbolic to be irritated that MS couldnt get an upgrade right on their own hardware, especially when it was installed by the use of dark patterns.
S_A_P··on Microsoft buys Xandr, AT&T’s advanced advertising business
This is a great point- I dramatically oversimplified what is going on. I do wonder how this is discussed internally. Since I started working as a dev back in the late 90s I feel like a lot of the optimism I had from tech improving our lives has largely been erased. Its probably just me getting old and pessimistic though :).
S_A_P··on Microsoft buys Xandr, AT&T’s advanced advertising business
Microsoft is on an interesting trajectory of late, but it also seems like there is some bifurcation as to what they're doing. On one hand they are trying to embrace Linux and pushing development tools forward, but on the other they are just making every slimy big tech type decision they can. I have my own personal axe to grind with them as they tricked my completely non tech savvy mother in law to upgrade her Surface to windows 11 and guess what? The freaking network driver doesn't work so it is now effectively bricked for her use case. She didnt want windows 11 and Im guessing just clicked all the highlighted options to "keep her computer up to date and safe". I found out the issue when we were in a location that only had slow satellite internet so she cant use her computer until she gets back to civilization and I can reload windows 10. Microsoft has created a tech support nightmare for me.

Seriously if any MS folks are reading this- you really have pretty much erased any goodwill I had towards you, but I suppose the ad revenue means you dont care.

S_A_P··on BlackHole Audio Driver
This is cool. Will have to compare it with the rogue amoeba software. If you are looking for a commercial alternative they have audio hijack and loopback which are excellent and latency free.
S_A_P··on Loumavox, the Forgotten, Mysterious Synthesizer from Louise and Marc Voksinski
This. Think of other early synths like the minikorg 700s. The filter is called the “traveler” for instance. I don’t think that most of the “synth jargon” was coined just yet. Even the mini moog has non standard labeling.

Aside from being a hoax, if the synth is real it’s definitely a very cool project and from what I heard quite usable as a mono synth.

S_A_P··on Judge rejects Purdue Pharma's $4.5B opioid settlement
As someone who had major surgery a few months ago I am glad they are for sale and prescribed. No I am not taking opioids now but in the few days after surgery they kept me mostly pain free.

Perdue deserves to be punished. Opioids are a public health crisis when abused. That doesn’t mean that they don’t have legitimate uses.

S_A_P··on Ask HN: Best Way to Contact YouTube
Never anything other that “this is great content” type content. I purposely do not comment on videos I don’t like or post negative or argumentative comments. I’ve a few YouTuber friends and we chat on their channels now and then. Again much like here on HN I do make an effort to keep most comments friendly and positive.
S_A_P··on Ask HN: Best Way to Contact YouTube
I’m a fan of punk rock but I wouldn’t call my music that. Mostly lofi type stuff.
S_A_P··on Ask HN: Best Way to Contact YouTube
I get that sentiment but I think it’s the fact that I have to start over and make a new channel. Lost all my subscriptions that I watch. The fact that 1 strike and you’re out is a thing.

The private video did not show the movie and showed my son getting excited and trying to imitate the cool beans bit. It was barely audible in a few seconds of the 20 second video and my son was talking over it so I doubt automated solution would likely not fingerprint it. It’s also about 10 years old and has always been private.

S_A_P··on Ask HN: Best Way to Contact YouTube
The music has been there for 8 years for one and 2 years for the second one. I’m wondering If my channel name is the reason “stupid American pig” is my band name. But it’s been that name since 2008
