I ask because I use some analogue synths, but they track quite well. Tuning is a hassle but not really hard. But calibration seems to be a different story.
Today you could probably build the thing with an arduino.
Aside from being a hoax, if the synth is real it’s definitely a very cool project and from what I heard quite usable as a mono synth.
