For what it's worth, I've been developing a Play (now 1.2.4) app for a year now and it's been a blast. Sometimes you can see the framework's immaturity, but I haven't run into any showstoppers like the author.
You make a good point about the possibility of mining all this data, but I'm not sure I want to give it away. We (well, some of us), go to lengths to maintain separate online personas. Why do I care if Facebook knows what my most-played songs are? I can get that info from iTunes, etc.
They're going to need a strong pull (killer app, privacy controls, whatever) to get my data.
Visiting SourceForge feels like going to RapidShare, with all sorts of ads vying for your attention. Each project has numerous sections which may or may not have been filled out by the owner. Heaven forbid that they used the mailing list feature.
