RaoulP··on John Ternus to become Apple CEO
For a long time I was hoping it would be Jeff Williams. For the brief moments these heads at Apple get the spotlight, I always felt he gave off a sense of humanity and sincerity.
RaoulP··on Zed is our office
Hashimoto writes Ghostty in the Zig programming language. There might be a mixup here between Zig and Zed.
RaoulP··on Edamagit: Magit for VSCode
> Maybe vscode has these built-in by now?

Yes, the blame feature is built-in now, with pop-up and all.

RaoulP··on Edamagit: Magit for VSCode
Funny, I just uninstalled it yesterday.

I only used it for the automatic blame behind the cursor, but I just learned that that is built-in to VS Code (something like “toggle blame decorator”). The built-in one is faster too.

RaoulP··on Japan Post launches 'digital address' system
I was looking for this comment as I thought 7 digits wasn't enough for the 55,000,000+ households in Japan. I missed the fact that it's alphanumeric - problem solved.
RaoulP··on Japan Post launches 'digital address' system
Thanks for the context!
RaoulP··on Working with Git Patches in Apple Mail (2023)
That’s a great idea, and very timely for me.
RaoulP··on A leap year check in three instructions
Would you mind elaborating?
RaoulP··on I Tried to Buy an Actual Barrel of Crude Oil (2015)
I vaguely remember som enterprising guys decided to buy some sort of storage tanks and then “buying” the oil while they still could, for a quick buck.
RaoulP··on My Own Private Binary: An Idiosyncratic Introduction to Linux Kernel Modules
As did I. Would be great if this catches on!
RaoulP··on Long Fatigue: The exhaustion that lingers after an infection
Would you mind sharing the full list of tests that you personally consider important (for men, in my case), or which you think constitute a "full panel"? I would like to be explicit about it when I get one.

I assume the "defaults" vary from country to country, and as you say, from clinic to clinic.

RaoulP··on Oncall shift should be Tuesday to Tuesday
I hadn't heard of Managed Service Providers before, but you make a good case for them.

I'm finding surprisingly little discussion on HN regarding the costs/benefits of MSPs. Or rather, under which conditions (such as company size) they make sense.

Any big players or companies you would recommend?

RaoulP··on Starship Flight 5: Launch and booster catch [video]
>(source: friend of mine works at a UK university doing deep-sea vehicles)

As in he works on their development? That sounds exciting, do you have something like the name of one of the vehicles?

RaoulP··on Astronauts take shelter in Starliner, other spacecraft after satellite breakup
"Shortly after 9 p.m. EDT, @NASA instructed crews aboard the space station to shelter in their respective spacecraft as a standard precautionary measure after it was informed of a satellite break-up at an altitude near the station’s earlier Wednesday. Mission Control continued to monitor the path of the debris, and after about an hour, the crew was cleared to exit their spacecraft and the station resumed normal operations."
RaoulP··on Fear and hardship for the last community inside Chitwan, Nepal's tiger central
What a surprise to see Chitwan mentioned here. It gives me a chance to share:

My father was from Nepal, and served as a park ranger in Chitwan National Park. I believe this was in the 80’s, before I was born. He always spoke very proudly about that time of his life. One fact he could never repeat too often was that he became an acquaintance of the late King of Nepal, who I believe visited the park on a yearly basis.

He also had a small scar on his arm that he claimed was from a tiger that hadn’t been fully tranquilized. I’ve always amusingly felt that he sometimes embellished his stories, but I’ll grant him this. Seeing the picture in the article of the men surrounding the tiger, is the first time I’ve had a chance to see what it might have looked like. Thanks!

RaoulP··on Free Julian Assange
«We are urgently calling for a mass demonstration outside the Royal Courts of Justice in London on Monday 20th of May as the monumental decision is handed down. A decision is expected on the day and should extradition be allowed moves to initiate his transfer the US could be taken immediately.»
RaoulP··on Italy's $12.7B Bridge to Sicily [video]
Sicily is really stunning. You make me want to return there now…

But I’m curious (if you don’t mind) - as an accomplished programmer/entrepreneur, do you ever feel torn between wanting to live in your idyllic home of Sicily, vs. a hub like Silicon Valley? Do you feel limited in terms of what you can do, and does that matter to you?

I ask because Sicily seems close to your heart, while I think it’s also safe to assume that you would have lots of opportunity elsewhere. I imagine staying was a very conscious decision?

There are lots of wonderful but “small” corners of the world where people might face the same dilemma.

RaoulP··on Ilya Sutskever to leave OpenAI
I'm not sure if I agree, but I much prefer this comment to your previous one. Cheers!
RaoulP··on OpenAI departures: Why can’t former employees talk?
I don't see why this comment needed a flag or so many uncharitable replies (though you could have expressed yourself more charitably too).

I understand your sentiment, but I think a lot of idealistic people will disagree - it's nice to think that a person should stand up for justice, no matter what.

In reality, I wonder how many people attempt to do this and end up regretting, because of what you mentioned.

RaoulP··on Apple announces new accessibility features, including eye tracking
Cool! That works surprisingly well. But how do you click while using this? Clicking on the trackpad doesn't work, when it's tracking my head.
RaoulP··on Ilya Sutskever to leave OpenAI
I come to HN for the quality of the discussions, please don't comment like this.
RaoulP··on Page Dewarping (2016)
Cool writeup!

Next, please do de-wrinkling of receipts...

RaoulP··on Protecting your email address via SVG instead of JavaScript
Sounds good! I might go even further and just use a custom address for each service, i.e. paypal@example.com or something.

But self-hosting email is an adventure I'm nervous to embark on.

RaoulP··on Protecting your email address via SVG instead of JavaScript
I think so too. And I think the majority of data breaches that have lead to spam for me are from ages ago, from random services I signed up for as a teenager.

For a few years after that I did the "+" Gmail alias thing, to try to filter and catch companies. But I realised that's easy and obvious to strip, so it wasn't worth the effort (although I have caught PayPal leaking my email somehow).

RaoulP··on Protecting your email address via SVG instead of JavaScript
I think this is a valid question. I see lots of effort at obfuscation but don't know if there's still a need.

I barely get spam and have a bigger issue with false positives in my spam folder. On the other hand I don't think there are many pages on the web that display my email address, so I'm curious about others' experience.

RaoulP··on Tesla retreat from EV charging leaves growth of U.S. network in doubt
Do you happen to have a link to that report?
RaoulP··on More info about synonyms at Google (2010)
I just realised that this technique is absent from local/desktop search. Meaning that in most systems you’re expected to recall how something was phrased, if you want to have a chance of finding it.

I know “Google Desktop” used to be a product years ago. What’s the state of that space today?

RaoulP··on Woodworking as an escape from the absurdity of software
Vouched for this comment. I’m not sure why it was dead.
RaoulP··on Nails Through the Ages: A Look at the History and Evolution of Nails
Truly. Is it okay to flag submissions like this?
RaoulP··on Science fiction and the death of the sun
Around the same age, I remember first hearing about the expanse of the sun, and being afraid of experiencing it.
