Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: Place to post music and revive constructive feedback?
Interestingly, I found this site on HN https://synthshare.com/ https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13607451

From the Show HN post, it appears to run on a "take one, leave one" system of reviews but there is little information exposed on the site itself. It looks like there was some activity in the past few months but perhaps a bit quiet for a very sustainable network.

There is always a relevant reddit. I don't know how frequently things get deeply critiqued here but a decent number of posts have a few comments on them. https://www.reddit.com/r/MusicCritique

Some producers I follow on Youtube operate Discords (some for Patrons only). These servers generally have a "share your tunes" channel for feedback but responses may be few and you're generally not guaranteed any review by the Artist themselves unless you're paying for it.

Pyrodogg··on New England's Largest Battery Is Hidden Inside a Mass. Mountain (2016)
Ah, the 90s. Such a great time for, "hey kid, let me show you something."

I remember getting semi-private, and slightly off-the-official-track tour of a nuclear power plant by my Dad. His company was involved in servicing the plant during an outage. It was open for organized public tours during that time (an idea that just seems bonkers now). My brothers and I got to see that part, and even a little bit more.

I was pre-teen at the time and unfortunately he has passed. I really wish I could get more details from him on this and other stories.

Pyrodogg··on Tell HN: Reminder: Google your name, scrub your credit sensitive information
I wouldn't put any stake into a truly permanent solution. Even if you strictly limit who you give your physical address to, or personal cell number, it'll probably leak out somehow with enough time. (ex. Your name, phone and address get stored in a 3rd parties address book outside of your control...)

So you take it to an extreme. For example, grandma probably needs to know your address if she's ever to visit you, but everyone else gets a PO box. Maybe only your spouse really needs to know your actual cell phone number, everyone else can get a proxy. But that takes time and money to maintain (emphasis on time).

IntelTechniques is a great resource for finding info on removing your data from "data brokers" in addition to the big credit reporting agencies. Quite a bit of information is provided for free on the site and associated podcast. You can also buy their book (or even hire their services).

Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: Why there's no modern clone of Desktop Tower Defense?
It's a pivot, but check out the indie game Exodus Borealis on Steam. The tower defense part of the game lines up with some of the Desktop Tower Defense features. The enemies path to the goal (your town) is entirely in your control by clever placement of walls, and a variety of tower types.

The other part of the game is a small city builder. You're overseeing a colony of washed-ashore survivors trying to make a new life on a (cursed) island. You need to maintain a stable population to mine resources, and build your tower defense maze.

Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: Anyone highlight text as they read?
Yep, very much.

I think it's a fidget of sorts, to generate stimulation. I guess in order to help stay focused reading blocks of text. If I'm not randomly selecting bits as I read I might be reading it aloud. Otherwise I might loose my focus, resulting in rereading bits more than I need to, or just falling off finishing it.

Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: What do you snack on while coding?
I really like carrots because they keep very easily and have such as satisfying crunchy freshness. Mini tomatoes are great when you alternate them with a few tiny mozzarella balls.

I also drink lots of coffee.

Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: Tell about your work from home setup
Effectively, the KVM switch just toggles between "work" and "fun".

But I have a nice window facing desk. While the days are currently quite short, it's still a great view.

Pyrodogg··on Use forums rather than Slack/Discord to support developer community
I have real anxiety about being locked out from "digital self" someday due to issues like this. Sometimes I really think this just isn't worth it anymore and I'm far too invested in "the Internet".
Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: What are you doing this weekend?
Walking around town enjoying the nice autumn colors.

Not every tree makes a good composition for a photo but they're all great to just admire with their golden leaves rustling in the sunlight and gently falling to the ground.

Pyrodogg··on When the FBI seizes your messages from Big Tech, you may not know it for years
I just discovered yesterday that while the Discord itself does not require it in all cases, certain servers with the highest restrictions can require that you have a phone number verified with Discord in order to post.
Pyrodogg··on Life before smartphones (2020)
I like making photos of landscapes as a hobby. I have a big dSLR camera, nice digital p&s, and my phone. Every time I go out (eg. on a hike) I have to force myself to consider if this is a "photo trip" or a "leisure trip". Am I going to be switched on, take a ton of gear, and be trying to make photos? Or am I going worry less about it, try to enjoy the moment and maybe grab a few non critical snapshots with whatever I have (usually just phone).

Even when going someplace new as a tourist, it's tempting to worry too much about photos. If I really want to play the aspiring travelling landscape photographer it would be work, a lot of it.

With a modern phone camera, for the purpose of a "I was here, I did/saw this" snapshot for posterity, it's pretty hard to mess up a photo so bad that it is worthless as long as it's pointed in the right direction. Take a few shots, but don't worry too much about quality or quantity.

"Apathy's a tragedy and boredom is a crime" - Welcome to the Internet by Bo Burnham[1]

This new song from Bo's covid-lockdown inspired special "Inside" hits this right on head. The Internet, particularly when paired with mobile devices just tries to suck up so much attention, because that's exactly what we made it do.

Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: Did you fully or partially quit smartphones?
No, but I do things to actively limit distractions.

I use an alternative launcher on Android called Action Launcher. It supports configurable focus modes I can use to lock down different groups of at certain times of the day. I just don't bother with going to socials, or hn on my mobile browser I guess it's never become a habit. So it works for me to lock the apps down when I'm working.

In the past I've gone the route of uninstalling social apps. Now, I have them installed but I renamed the shortcuts and prevent them from showing up in any "recently used" list. No place on my home screens so the only way to launch Facebook is to open the app list and search for "garbage", etc.

I use Tasker and plugins for a few things. I use Tasker's native ability to do things like turn on battery saver mode by default when I move away from my home wifi. This naturally puts some limits on how much things can run in the background, and it improves my battery charge throughout the day.

With Tasker I also use plugins like Auto Notification to set up rules to block notifications from all social apps during the main working hours of the day. Doesn't help to have "garbage" showing up in notifications without any effort on my part. It's always interesting to open the Facebook app later in the afternoon and see just how many notifications have piled up that would have tried barging into my working concentration.

I don't want to completely remove these apps from my phone since I use it as a private / social tool in the evenings and weekends.

I need to use it for music and work, for my sanity, and I'd rather not have to fund a completely separate device for that. So, I jump through hoops trying to bend them to my will.

Pyrodogg··on NFTs Are a Pyramid Scheme and People Are Already Losing Money
It's theoretically possible that the contract could be structured in such a way that "The bearer of this token has rights X, Y, Z over this real or intellectual property", but that's definitely not what is being hyped right now.

More commonly, people are just buying an authenticated digital asset which confers no rights over the source material.

For example, An artist could sell unsigned instances of their digital art as .JPG files, and they could sell authenticated copies as NFT.

In both cases, you get a copy of the art. In neither case are you getting an implicit copyright to the work that would allow you to redistribute the work.

Pyrodogg··on NFTs Are a Pyramid Scheme and People Are Already Losing Money
Is it even a fraud? What rights does holding the NFT give to the source object?
Pyrodogg··on Which color scale to use when visualizing data
Here's a link to the point in the video where this concept was discussed. It references two classical art paintings, and two photographs from the presenter.

Pyrodogg··on Which color scale to use when visualizing data
Thanks, yea meant "luminance" throughout.
Pyrodogg··on Which color scale to use when visualizing data
I was just watching a seminar about color grading in portrait photography and it also talked about luminosity, how it's processed faster than color, and how to account for it while color grading.

For artistic affect, it may be preferred to have near equal luminosity throughout the image so that the luminance variance doesn't allow you to "make up your mind" about the image before processing the color.

Interesting to so soon come across related studies without searching.

Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: Why don't microwave ovens have IR cameras to tell when food is done?
You don't even need fancy cameras. Just a steam sensor and a dictionary with info on how foods release steam as they cook.

Pyrodogg··on Companies must stop requiring people to link their phone numbers
From my understanding Google Voice is still managed more like hacking SMS capabilities onto a "landline" number than being a true mobile operator.

I've also started experiencing issues with a certain bank no longer accepting it for SMS. Luckily they offered an RSA fob.

I get a minor anxiety spike every time I log into an infrequently used services with SMS based 2fa.

Pyrodogg··on ADHD-resistant sticky note that changes color and font often to not disappear
Every 10 minutes. Which is actually pretty glacial feeling.
Pyrodogg··on Everything I Know
I think this is fairly logical. There will always be more things that you're "aware of, interested in" than you deeply "know and understand". This leads to more references than notes, and more unread books than read books in one's library.
Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
Universal Paperclips achieved in 7 hours 47 minutes 23 seconds

Oof, there went my afternoon. Had to leave it for dinner some where in the middle.

Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: What are your best purchases in 2020?
New office set-up for working from home. An adjustable height desk, an anti-fatigue mat for standing, and also a new office chair for sitting.

Also received my Remarkable 2, which I'm quite enjoying.

Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: What did you buy this holiday season?
A good gaming chair for my desk.
Pyrodogg··on Ask HN: Is owning a phone a legal requirement now?
And not just any phone number either, a certified Mobile Phone Number!

Google Voice is slowly getting kicked out of more and more SMS based auth systems.

Pyrodogg··on Burnout can exacerbate work stress, further promoting a vicious circle

Pyrodogg··on ReMarkable MicroSD (2019)
Still waiting for my Remarkable 2 to arrive (now sometime in October). So frustrating to keep getting so many ads for it.
