Nbox9··on TreeCard: The wooden debit card that plants trees
Ecosia, the company backing TreeCard, has a search engine that plants trees. Ecosia has claimed to have planted 116M trees. Several environmentalists have come out in support of the product — and specifically in support of the way Ecosia uses partners to plant trees on Ecosia’s behalf and the way Ecosia keeps their partners accountable.

I personally will have a hard time saying good-bye to my credit card rewards. However I think the wooden card might have a viral aspect because people will want to comment on how unique the design is. This looks like another great product by Ecosia, and I hope that they continue to make competitive products that plant trees.

It’s also worth noting that while planting trees is very good for the environment, it is not a silver bullet against climate change.

Nbox9··on Messengers of hope: two mRNA Covid-19 vaccines herald a new era for vaccinology
> This virus is just one and it is likely to get worse. We need to invest now into large scale computer simulation of vaccines or things will become much worse.

This seems like a logical leap to me. Yes we need to do something to make us less open to viral threats, but you don’t present any evidence that improved computer simulations can be a useful tool in helping develop/test vaccines faster.

Nbox9··on New U.S. Dietary Guidelines Reject Recommendation to Cut Sugar, Alcohol Intake
My favorite logical inconsistency in the food pyramid is that dairy is given it’s own category of required daily intake for a healthy diet, but 65% of the global population has some level of lactose intolerance. The government was claiming that people with lactose intolerance cannot have a complete diet.
Nbox9··on The Life in the Simpsons Is No Longer Attainable
Right. If you look at the distribution of savings [0] you realize very few people are in a strong finical position.

Nbox9··on New U.S. Dietary Guidelines Reject Recommendation to Cut Sugar, Alcohol Intake
Government dietary guidelines effects health education, and my public school health education had an impact on the decisions I made during some of my more formative years.
Nbox9··on New U.S. Dietary Guidelines Reject Recommendation to Cut Sugar, Alcohol Intake
It’s not shady that an industry is doing the best thing for their own interest. It’s shady that the alcohol industry’s best interest is against many strong public health concerns.
Nbox9··on New U.S. Dietary Guidelines Reject Recommendation to Cut Sugar, Alcohol Intake
I don’t know where the revenue is, but it’s worth noting a significant amount of alcohol advertising is spent on cheap beer.
Nbox9··on A review of Dominion, 4000 plays later (2012)
I’ve played over 1000 games of 1v1 Dominion.

I think the author is overstating the strategy space of the game. For example, a common strategy is to build an “engine” using +draw +action cards. There are _many_ possible engines to build, but that is more tactical.

Edit: I just checked my online profile, and I’ve played over 6000 games.

Nbox9··on Facebook managers trash their own ad targeting in unsealed remarks
Along the same vain, Siri was launched in 2011.
Nbox9··on Facebook Employees Say Apple Fight Is “Self Serving”
Software companies do not have moral high ground to attack hardware companies for labor practices because software companies benefit from cheap and plentiful hardware. If Facebook was only able to be accessed by hardware produced by fair labor practices then they would not have a social network worth talking about. In addition, I doubt Facebook’s Portal and Oculus series of hardware have significantly better labor practices than Apple.
Nbox9··on Some U.S. Colleges Cut Tuition
This is hyperbolic. There are plenty of people with underprivileged backgrounds and student loans that have achieved financial prosperity.

Nbox9··on Book publishers call on Apple to match 15% commission granted to developers
You’re missing the point. Some people still buy CDs and Records. Some people fill up disks with .flac or .acc files. The industry still serves those customers, but the real business is happening on the streaming services. What _you_ want and what the market demands are two different things.
Nbox9··on Show HN: I made a Mahjong browser game
If you have a good wait, and you have a closed hand, there’s very little incentive not to riichi.
Nbox9··on Show HN: I made a Mahjong browser game
I’m not sure I’d describe the multiplayer mahjong games as “relaxing”. Riichi specifically gets into really intense situations.
Nbox9··on Psiloscoby: Psilocybin Brewed by Kombucha
I wonder if it is something that is borne out but because of the illegal nature of psilocybin it is shared as just an idea.

Nbox9··on US internet speeds 91% faster in 2020 according to user speed tests
50+ is a rather large bin. Netflix recommends 25+ for streaming 4K, so we could assume 50+ is ~2 4K streams, which seems like a normal amount for a family.

There’s a big difference between a house getting 50down and 5up and a house with a symmetric gigabit fiber connection.

Nbox9··on Could we reboot a modern civilization without fossil fuels? (2016)
You can get pretty far along metallurgy with burning wood and charcoal.
Nbox9··on Drugs for the People: Rethinking the global pharmaceutical supply chain
It seems to me to be too large of a correction against ‘highly-optimized supply chains’ to assume that at any time we’ll suddenly need a 100x supply of any medicine in the WHO List of Essential Medicines and that we’ll need this emergency supply of medicine while the world supply chain is disrupted. This is essentially the ask of the article, when it references the sudden need for Hydroxychloroquine.

Should we have emergency stockpiles of food, water, medical equipment, energy, and shelters? Absolutely. Let’s remember that any inefficiencies in our manufacturing base serve to make us less competitive internationally and raise the prices that consumers spend. There’s only so much emergency preparedness we can reasonably expect.

Nbox9··on The CIA's Quest for Mind Control: Torture, LSD and a 'Poisoner in Chief'
People sometimes do bad things, and aren’t held accountable.

Sometimes, these unaccountable things are secret. Some secrets will remain secrets. The secretes that will become public knowledge are my worrisome.

It’s common to do bad things and be unaccountable for them — from your own actions or the actions you take on behalf of the group. Society is best when people think about how their worst actions effect other people. If we all try to help each other, surely we can find a way.

This is my dummy translation, and it doesn’t hold a flame to the remorse, regret, and hope of the original.

Nbox9··on Drugs for the People: Rethinking the global pharmaceutical supply chain
Is it viable for every country to produce all of it’s own basic necessities — food, medicine, energy, fresh water, building materials? Is it desirable?

I believe that the US being a net exporter of food, and a net importer of medicine is an acceptable situation. I think that to frame out ‘reliance’ on India and China for medicine ignores China’s ‘reliance’ on the US for soybeans, or India’s reliance on US warships in the Indian Ocean for strategic defense. We are codependent, and that codependency is going to keep us all from killing each other again.

Nbox9··on Drugs for the People: Rethinking the global pharmaceutical supply chain
> But if you make some prosaic observation about this overall pattern

If you outlined a pattern in your comment I failed to deduce it. Something about negative externalities of increased drug consumption? I’m sure there is a point there that deserves a better argument.

Nbox9··on Linux on iPad
I don’t think Android was well understood by the Linux and Open Source community in it’s first three years. A lot of people happy that it was consumer Linux and hacking away on root kits, bootloaders, and alternative marketplaces. We didn’t realize Google would have an effective monopoly on software distribution inside of the Android ecosystem (at least in western markets).

Nbox9··on Food Delivery Is Magical Thinking
I eat beans a lot, like 10+ times a week. I’ve stopped telling people I cook beans for dinner because they assume I have money problems when I do.
Nbox9··on Food Delivery Is Magical Thinking
>rice & beans

Cooking rice and beans at home is cheaper, better for the environment and more healthy than most of the food on door dash.

Nbox9··on Food Delivery Is Magical Thinking
In the US ordering (free) water is common for casual restaurants. There is a lot of profit to be made from selling alcoholic drinks, but that’s not in everyone’s business plan.
