Nbox9··on Mortgage rates just hit 5%. Buying a home has become a lot more expensive
I think this is way oversimplifying the realestate market.

1. There is a fixed amount of realestate that must be shared by a growing population.

2. Inflation means the cost of everything is increasing. Why wouldn’t that provide significant upward pressure on homes?

3. Local governments spend a lot of effort maintaining high real-estate values. You can’t fight city hall.

This comment is too bleak.

If they refinanced in 2020 then they likely bought in 2019 or earlier. If prices fell to 2019 levels it would be a crash —- and probably merit all sorts of government response including lowering interest rates. No one that entered the market before 2020 is “screwed”.

Housing prices even in the markets hit hardest by 2008 recovered in ten years. You aren’t stuck living in your current home forever.

If you bought an investment property then relax, there’s no indicator that rents are going to decrease anytime soon.

They are just an improvement on the OLED technology, with reduced burnin risk and brighter pixels being the largest improvement.

I really enjoy the 49” ultrawide 1000R format Samsung has been pioneering. It’s the size/resolution of two 27” 1440p monitors next to each other, has a buttery smooth refresh rate, and a curve that makes viewing more comfortable and natural.

The new quantum dot displays are also very innovative.

Nbox9··on FDA Approves First CRISPR Cows for Beef
That’s because it’s a logical appeal. The argument is: Eating meat causes suffering to the animal. Eating meat is unnecessary for a human life. Eating meat causes unnecessary suffering.

> No, I took the actual definition, and you just don't like it.

You didn’t take the actual definition. Look at the GMO wiki, and the first sentence defines the term in such a way to restrict it to organisms created with more modern techniques. When having conversations with people it’s important to have a shared vocabulary with people. Having a different vocabulary creates miscommunications. It can be especially hard to assume best intent of people are using a non-standard definition because it is a technique purposefully done around scientific and academic jargon to achieve political ends.

Nbox9··on Scientists find microplastics in blood for first time
Plastic is an oil (by)product and the oil industry is one of the top three lobbies in the US. We cannot count on public institutions to seriously address this issue.
Nbox9··on Not smart but clever? The return of 'dumbphones'
There’s been a steady decrease in my smartphone use from 2016 till today. In the past I used my phone 6+ hours a day. Yesterday I used it to check email once for 3 minutes, I opened safari three times for an average of less than 60 seconds in each use, and used 2FA 5 times. It was a slightly higher than average smartphone use day.

As a person that is mostly indifferent about my iPhone I don’t understand who would buy a dumb phone. Is it for the price sensitive? Is it for people that don’t know how to use a smartphone? Is it for security sensitive? Is it for people with cellphone addicted?

Nbox9··on Microsoft accidentally reveals that it is testing ads in Windows Explorer
> Honestly dual-booting with Linux and Windows on your workstation is perfectly feasible nowadays.

I’m confused by the word “nowadays”. I had a friend with a dual-booting setup between Windows and Linux in the 90s.

Nbox9··on Microsoft accidentally reveals that it is testing ads in Windows Explorer
I started daily using non-windows OS in 2004. Ever since then I’ve been finding more and more ways to remove Windows from my life. I work for companies that use macOS —- I use proton to play video games —- I have found alternatives for virtually every application I run. I occasionally use a public computer, a friends computer, or interact with systems that run on Windows Embedded.

I feel as if this journey has given me a deeper understanding of computers (a valuable skill), it has definitely provided me with more enjoyable user experiences and a more productive computational environment. My response to being exposed to non-Microsoft software was to migrate towards it. I do not understand why this response isn’t more universal.

> It's particularly smart in this moment

It may be particularly smart for this moment in internal French politics, but energy independence is a smart move for any sovereign.

Nbox9··on Have we been thinking about inflation all wrong?
Rising interest rates is likely to have a significant downward pressure on home prices. Think carefully before entering a very leveraged position (like the 3.5% down FHA loan) in the current market.
Nbox9··on Inflation rises 7.5% over past year, more than expected and highest since 1982
It’s potentially bad because the market isn’t as simple as “keep inflation at 2%”. We also want GDP growth and low unemployment. The tools we have to decrease inflation can hurt both of those metrics. This means our position is risky, and the treatment to reduce inflation might have strong consequences.

GTA has a satirical take on American culture told through a rags to riches story of a criminal. It’s humorous, filled with exaggerated characters, action packed, and tells the familiar Scarface-like story.

There’s a linear increase of dementia risk as you age. It seems to be not a matter of if you get dementia, but if something else kills you first.

Nbox9··on Facebook loses users for the first time
This gives them more (young) users, a better connection to their users, a ton of patents, and jumps them out of the smartphone era. They are dead in the water without a gambit of a similar size, buying up the competition (their previous primary strategy) only works as long as regulatory agencies are willing to play ball.

I really enjoy carbonated beverages, the whole sensory package the bubbles bring to the drinking experience. I have had an easy experience substituting the soda I drank as a child for a more healthy carbonated beverage.

Nbox9··on Google to turn on activity tracking for many users who turned it off
I admire how focused you are on drive & gmail search quality. I have a lot of concerns about using user data to improve search that are larger than this specific feature or discussion. This leads me to implement strategies to reduce new data generated, such as loading URLs directly instead of accessing them from search. I’d like to conclude by conceding your approach will generate the better results, but that the best search results aren’t what I’m optimizing for.

Nbox9··on GDPR enforcer rules that IAB Europe’s consent popups are unlawful
I suppose the models might theoretically at risk if the learning data can be extracted, but I don’t think this will practically happen because it’s so far different from current GDPR practices. Someone would have to prove their protected information is inside of a model before they might have a chance. After that, I am not a lawyer.
Nbox9··on GDPR enforcer rules that IAB Europe’s consent popups are unlawful
My understanding is that as long as there is no PII is in the ML model (there’s not) then any existing models do not need to be deleted.
