Mobius01··on Public US hearing on UFOs [video]
My concern here is that if these testimonies can’t be linked to evidence, the entire subject will be once again be discredited, goodwill from legislators will evaporate and the status quo will remain - that being UAPs being genuine alien devices or no.

The part that never adds up to me is the complete lack of concrete evidence in the open (when there is ubiquitous technology for detection in the hands of the public), or the implied astonishing competence of governments and agencies cooperating internationally to keep alien intelligence hidden. We couldn't prevent a pandemic, have lost nuclear weapons and are watching the planet die due to carbon emissions… yet somehow the alien-intelligence-suppression-network works?

Mobius01··on The last day of Constantinople
Somewhat tangential, but I started to read Baudolino by Umberto Eco last night, and the first chapter at least takes place during the (it seems) the last siege of Constantinople. So far it has been a wonderful read.
Mobius01··on I don't need to clean up my desktop and downloads folders in macOS (2021)
You’re not alone! I had developed a habit of cleaning downloads and files since storage was somewhat scarce when I started using PCs in the 90s. Now it’s so cheap that I will simply delete very large files, then name the folder yyyy-mm-dump and place it with others in a backup folder somewhere. If I ever have to recove disk space I will glance over and delete it then, but more often it has been more valuable to dig up some meme or image.
Mobius01··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
I apologize that I can’t read all threads and responses, but this sounds like Altman and OpenAI have realized they have a viable path to capture most of the AÍ market value and now they’re pulling the ladder behind them.
Mobius01··on Toyota: Car location data and videos of 2M customers exposed for ten years
In many cases this isn’t viable. On my car for for instance - a 2016 Subaru - removing the telematics module also disables all front speakers because the audio signal is routed through it.
Mobius01··on Microsoft Flight Simulator tricked me into getting a pilot's license
Excel tricked me into getting a SAFe certification.
Mobius01··on Jaron Lanier on the danger of AI
I've read this short story about the singularity years ago, written by a scientist from UW-Madison and although the writing isn't great, it has always stayed with me. Recent developments made me think of it, and the premise is precisely that - the group that develops AGI uses it to control the markets and drives everyone else insane through economic disruption, while staying entirely opaque.

Mobius01··on Searching for friends in Mark Zuckerberg’s deserted fantasyland
Sony had a similar product a decade ago, but on flat screens - PlayStation Home. It was a virtual space where PlayStation users could create an avatar, visit shared spaces and have their private ones as well. A key difference is that is was running on a platform people already had, and most of the users already had a common interest in using it. I wonder if it was made today, with VR compatibility, the popularity and longevity would be different.
Mobius01··on Tesla readies revamp of Model Y codenamed 'Juniper'
I’m warming up to the idea, so I’m watching the new models with interest.

I should hope Tesla will use the opportunity to improve their build quality and QA processes during the retooling. It was understandable as a new manufacturer in the recent past appealing to a customer base of early adopters willing to overlook those issues for the tech advancements elsewhere in the cars. Now there is no plausible excuse.

Mobius01··on Civilization 7 Is in Development
Civ V had such beautiful presentation, with art deco visual themes, wonders presented as beautiful paintings and wonderful music. I’d like to see that again.

It would be great to see some of the recent advances in AI text generation enrich the game. It would make the games more varied.

Mobius01··on OpenAI CEO Says His Tech Is Poised to “Break Capitalism”
Is there any automation technology that hasn’t further entrenched capitalism and served to enrich the few at the top that own and control it?
Mobius01··on Ask HN: How are you using ChatGPT to make your life better?
I’m a product designer with an art background - I’ve used it to give me short prompts to create a piece, or a short story to illustrate and expand upon. Il considering a subscription too, but I need to justify it with more daily usage. I’m here for what the community has to add.
Mobius01··on Pelé has died
I don’t think so. The rivalry between Brazil and Argentina is nowhere remotely intense as the media likes to portray (and profit from) - with the exception toxic fans on both sides.
Mobius01··on Merry Christmas, HN
Happy holidays to all. I can sincerely say that even though I’m not precisely on the target demographic for HN, it is by far the most valuable and pleasant community in the internet. Cheers to all.
Mobius01··on Musk says Twitter has had massive revenue drop as advertisers pause spending
I find it amazing that he is publicly expressing surprise at this. He telegraphed disruptive changes to the company that may reduce the user base and introduce undesirable content on the platform… and somehow it’s a surprise that advertisers are taking precaution? Not to mention possible conflicts of interest with automakers.
Mobius01··on Kodak Is Hiring Film Technicians: ‘We Cannot Keep Up with Demand’
The Better Everyday channel has a 3-part visit at the Kodak facility, it’s a fascinating look at the process of film manufacturing:

Mobius01··on Tesla AI Day 2022
The Tesla Robot was underwhelming. I appreciate the engineers on stage highlighting their work, but it all felt a generation behind Boston Dynamic’s efforts.
Mobius01··on Matrix web-based green code rain, made with love
Thanks for this, it looks absolutely brilliant.

To the author - this is beautiful. If I could, it would be awesome to have a version that simulates the title of the film: the code forms up a name or a simple sentence.

Mobius01··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
You know who should be celebrating? Sketch and InVision. Sketch has signaled a desire to go multi platform, which has been a problem for large corporate customers with mixed platforms.

InVision failed to standup their own UI design tool, but the collaboration suite is still good and they were starting to death spiral. This would be an immense opportunity for both to become the only viable immediate alternatives to the Adobe threat.

Mobius01··on Brazilian Amazon lost 18 trees per second in 2021
It is not the responsibility if the Brazilian people to give up their sovereignty in order to save the world, particularly after other nations have burned their way to the top of the development scale. You seem to be oblivious to reality.
Mobius01··on Senate Approves another Antitrust bill that would allow sideloading on iOS
I would also argue that there is a relative lack of bad software because unqualified or bad actors have to go through these same hoops.
Mobius01··on Termo – Portuguese Wordle
I just completed a game successfully (3rd row success) and it seems to be pt-br.
Mobius01··on Winamp: A fast, flexible, high-fidelity music player for Windows (1998)
You just detonated a nostalgia cobalt bomb, this was my favourite as well. So well crafted in it’s thoughtful details.
Mobius01··on Ask HN: What is your biggest struggle right now?
Coping with aging and the narrowing of opportunities that it entails.
Mobius01··on Designing Up Banking
As a designer in a similar industry, I can confirm that I despise half my peers for their lack of competence and general ability to bullshit their way to a paycheck. The design industry has been irrevocably infested by people that speak a lot but can’t execute anything.
Mobius01··on Microsoft to acquire ZeniMax Media and Bethesda Softworks for $7.5B
Also note they Microsoft mismanaged the Halo property royally. The most recent failure the delay of Halo Infinite, that allegedly has been in development for over 4 years and will miss the launch of the new Xbox console due to poor quality. Microsoft also run Rare almost into irrelevancy after the acquisition. Not the greatest track record there.
Mobius01··on Dune Official Trailer
One aspect of the original novel: Frank Herbert is rather terse on his descriptions of the environment, world and universe, leaving a lot for the reader to imagine. He excels at world building without being prescriptive, I think it’s a strength in the novel and allows for a certain timelessness.

Lynch’s film production design was pulled out of nowhere and it isn’t any more accurate than Villeneuve’s. It just has a more direct relation between the subject - a future space feudal society - which most people correlate with pomp and elaborate visual motifs.

In fact, if you consider the only visual work based on Dune that Herbert himself endorsed, it recalls the the newer film more than the baroque aesthetics of the former - the work of John Schoenherr for an illustrated edition of the novel: http://ski-ffy.blogspot.com/2010/08/illustrated-dune.html

Mobius01··on Lord of the Manor: a medieval city builder game
It’s such a good distillation of what made Stronghold and the Impressions’s city building series so great. Please keep it going!
Mobius01··on Palantir Announces Confidential Submission of Draft S-1
But it does. You see, these high level executives often have a goal in mind, but the best way to go about it is with this sort of ambiguity because it gives them room to inflate the expectations and plausible deniability when it goes wrong. If you look at the PowerPoint therapy know as consultant-driven product development, you will see the same language. Vague, ambiguous when documented.
Mobius01··on Halt and Catch Fire
It’s a great show, thought indeed it takes a few episodes to find its footing. If you can suspend your disbelief a little about the liberties taken for the sake of storytelling, you will find it a compelling drama.

It should be noted that it has a proper ending, it doesn’t simply come to an abrupt stop due to cancellation.
