Maha-pudma··on Siliconpr0n: High Resolution Chip Maps
I couldnt agree more, I use ublock in advanced mode (even on mobile) and I was expecting to have to enable multiple scripts, which nearly always consist or analitics and ads, to be able to use this thing. Nope, all first party scripts, brilliant.

Better folder descriptions maybe but other than that perfect!

Maha-pudma··on Police Say They Use Facial Recognition Despite Bans
Not everyone lives in America which is what most of this thread seems to be about.

No idea why you're mentioning Catholics in the UK Parliament. Unless its an attempt at discrediting the previous commenters statement.

We certainly refer to them as the civi-police in the military. Though we don't have the gun issues the US has, but that seems based on an antiquated amendment even older the Peels analysis.

Maha-pudma··on Rolling Stone seeks 'thought leaders' willing to pay $2k to write for them
OK I have to admit on reading the title and a few comments my first thoughts were 'why would you bother'.

Now I've read the article it makes sense if you're a struggling magazine and need money. Also if you got something to sell and need a cheap worldwide platform to advertise on.

Maha-pudma··on Show HN: I built an online interactive course that helps you learn Vim faster
So is Vim
Maha-pudma··on Ask HN: In 1 sentence, what do you like about your job?
Is that American pants or British pants?
Maha-pudma··on OpenBoard – FOSS Keyboard for Android which respects your privacy
When I do that it does open in fdriid but to the "Armenian for AnysoftKeyboard".

Edit: thought I would install it and it turns out its English. Using to type this.

Maha-pudma··on Things I Didn't Learn in 2020
I'd have no issue telling you to mind your own if you tried telling me how to manage my kids.
Maha-pudma··on Ask HN: Product Manager, what dream tool are you missing? I'll build it for free
My dream tool would be a mobile version of zim-wiki. They started work on it years ago but it never got far.
Maha-pudma··on I Ripped Out a £6k Lighting System
I'm replying to myself in an effort to reply generally to everyone who replied to me, thanks for your use cases.

I can see some of the reasons and benefits and to me, no offence meant, the seem pretty trivial, especially when you take into account the privacy issues.

I have dumb timers for lights I want on at certain times, dumb movement sensors for outside lights that only turn on at night, my boiler has a timer which I manually set if needed, and I've yet to see any actual benefit to a smart meter. I can read and calculate my usage.

My point is everything I need can be accomplished without network connectivity or providing multi-national tech companies with all my data. I don't need a digital assistant and don't want to talk to my lightbulbs.

As one of the other commenters said, you get all the problems of IT infrastructure for light bulbs and sensors. Hell if I wanted some automated stuff I'd look at a raspberry pi or Arduino and roll my own version (half joking, I'd definitely attempt it).

Maha-pudma··on I Ripped Out a £6k Lighting System
I don't get it. What's the point in these systems? Genuinely. Why would I ever need this? Just like a "smart" doorbell, fridge, meter. I would love for someone to be able to explain the benefits to me over the normal, cheap, completely working "dump" version. The only "smart" device I own is a TV and it is crap, worse thing I've ever bought.
Maha-pudma··on Ask HN: How do you manage your plain text notes
I don't do notes on my phone. I manage all my notes with zim-wiki. It's cross platform and portable on Windows so no installation. Plain text and folders for organisation, search is fast. Has tagging and dating built-in.
Maha-pudma··on EU Draft Council Declaration Against Encryption [pdf]
This is really 3 problems for the EU or whatever government wants to bring this in.

The way I see it is the government/EU, whatever, needs to first force this encryption backdoor into use, then force everyone to only use chat apps with the backdoor, and finally force everybody not to go looking for this backdoor.

They are listed in order of difficulty. And they are totalitarian in their level of force.

Maha-pudma··on Tunnels in the US cost more than anywhere else
Is it for the same reasons health care is so expensive in the US?
Maha-pudma··on The cheap pen that changed writing forever
Yeah you're absolutely correct its pretty much fake but I still like the story, just like I like the toothpaste factory story. Essentially keep it simple stupid, don't over engineer, and do your research.
Maha-pudma··on Ask HN: How are you downloading YouTube videos?
What's the difference between the two? I can't really tell.
Maha-pudma··on The cheap pen that changed writing forever
I always use a pencil over a pen when ever I can. I write a lot outdoors and pens don't work in the rain. And there's also the story of pens and pencils in space I like.
Maha-pudma··on Self-erecting pneumatic structures (2000) [pdf]
I have nothing constructive to add but there's definitely a crude/childish joke available with regards that title. It's really the only reason I stopped to look at the paper, which turned out quite interesting.
Maha-pudma··on The Black Hole Information Paradox Comes to an End
I'm not sure what to make of this comment. I'm not going to pretend I understand any of this at anything short of an extremely superficial level but you argument sounds like something a religious fundamentalist might say; just insert their belief system.

"To someone like me, who believes that the universe is, must be, fundamentally a construct of god, the actual academic paper is hardly any better. Whatever the paper is doing is not describing any kind of god process... sounds far more like a kind of liturgical incantation than a description of how god is running our universe."

I might be wrong, my understanding is limited, but you shouldn't dismiss something because it doesn't fit with you beliefs; you beliefs may be wrong g.

Maha-pudma··on Woman allegedly impersonated prosecutor, dropped charges against herself
Thanks. Can't believe sites still do the 'we're unable to show you a page because ... GDPR'.
Maha-pudma··on Ask HN: How do you manage your photo/video collections?
I've a bunch of year folders from years ago when I only produced what's now seemingly a month's worth of pictures in a year.

Now I'm dumping pictures onto a harddrive every 6 months or so. I'm planning on dumping everuthing into one folder and writing a shell script to sort them into 'yyyy/mm/yyyy-mm-dd'. Just need to work out how I'm doing that.

I don't use or trust online storage.

Maha-pudma··on Chrome exempts Google sites from user site data settings
From the outside looking in I always wonder why anyone uses chrome. I'm not a web dev but do use devtools. Why use Chrome over something like Firefox, Vivaldi or one of the other browsers? Genuine question, what makes it so good.
Maha-pudma··on LyX – The Document Processor
I remember trying to use this when I did an undergrad math course. My tutor went on about latex and such, I remember being very confused about the whole thing. Thus was prior to any knowledge on my part about markup languages or programming. I simply couldn't use it, I ended up using libreoffice with its equation editor. It worked for me at the time.

Now if I was doing something math related I'd probably try a combination of pandoc markdown with mathjax.

Maha-pudma··on How to Clean Text Data at the Command Line
Would it not work in WSL though? If you wanted windows support.
Maha-pudma··on Cockney Rhyming Slang History
Loved, still do, this program growing up.
Maha-pudma··on Five Eyes and Japan call for Facebook backdoor to monitor crime
How is viewing a Facebook profile in the control of that total bastard a good way of determining whether they should be given a job?

Personally I'm on no social network, on purpose. I've never had any issues. If it was an issue for an employer that I didn't have a Facebook account that their issue not mine.

Maha-pudma··on Missing Covid-19 test data was caused by the ill-thought-out use of Excel
I'm certainly not singling out excel, this thread is just about excel so thought I'd share my frustration with that. I've had similar experiences with pandas certainly. I've not used the rest of your examples, but do have similar issues with libreoffice calc. Regards pandas it is certainly easier sorting out the assumptions independent programmers make by including 'dtype=str'.
Maha-pudma··on Missing Covid-19 test data was caused by the ill-thought-out use of Excel
I can attest to this. I move job and my new work place used to manage everything in excel. Something's still are. Realising excel could not scale, and with no support for IT for a proper solution the "tech" guy (that is good with computers but not a developer) was tasked with creating a "database". What we now have is essentially 3 excel spreadsheet tables in access that you can run SQL on and input data using access forms. No normalisation, no well anything really. We're now coming to the point where access is creaking at the seams. I'm confident with properly designed tables and queries we wouldn't be, and I'm no expert either, but it will have to fail before there's a concerted effort to redesign or god forbid IT do there jobs.
Maha-pudma··on Missing Covid-19 test data was caused by the ill-thought-out use of Excel
Every single problem I've ever had with excel stems from excel trying to be too clever. Nearly all my problems with importing data into it could be solved if excel left everything as is until I asked it to format values a certain way.
Maha-pudma··on uMatrix has been archived
What's the alternative to this?

This was on all my browsers, with ublock origin, the first extension I install. Now what?

I'm not a good enough programmer to take this on but I suggest 'uMatrix Reloaded' as the new name.
