Lutzb··on The Mainframe Is a Modern Platform
Z and POWER are two distinct architectures.
Lutzb··on OKC-based company wants to keep employees’ $1,200 stimulus payments
No coincidence here that the term human resources was invented for labour. They are resources that can be exploited until they can't be further exploited.
Lutzb··on How Crash Bandicoot hacked the original Playstation [video]
I have to use this opportunity: Thank you for all the great IndyCar and Nascar titles released over the early years of the PC platform. The Papyrus racing title hold a very special in my heart/childhood.
Lutzb··on IBM's Lost Decade
Hi, fellow employee.

edit: sorry. I misunderstood you. Some projects are delivered with subcontractors, of course. But I can tell you from inside that we still have a healthy GBS, GTS and Cloud Services, delivering projects.

Lutzb··on Format Python Code Using YAPF
This is the reason we switched to black for Python about a year ago. There are no options to tweak. At first I had to deal with a lot of complaining developers, but now everyone got accustomed to blacks formatting style and we moved on.
Lutzb··on IBM's Lost Decade
I really don't know where you get your information from but this is demonstrably wrong IBM GBS and GTS still ploy hundred of thousands of people.
Lutzb··on Andrei Tarkovsky’s Message to the Young: “Learn to Be Alone” (2015)
I can relate to this so much. Spending time alone feels like recharging my social battery. There is a weird contradiction I enjoy being around people, but at the same time long to be alone and enjoy the solitude. Now with kids, social obligations and a plethora of distractions these moments alone get fewer and fewer by the day.
Lutzb··on IBM Names Arvind Krishna CEO
My bet was on Jim Whitehurst.
Lutzb··on Rolls-Royce plans mini nuclear reactors by 2029
Thank you, this was very informative. It seems a lot of thorium reactor proponents never discuss those issues or are not aware of them.
Lutzb··on The battle to save America’s undercover spies in the digital age
I am still convinced that creating social networks aka gigantic databases of our own population was a mistake on an unheard level of idiocy. Foreign intelligence must be shaking their heads in disbelief what we handed to them voluntarily. What took months if not years to generate for foreign intelligence can now be gathered, tested on confirmed in a plethora of public, leaked or infiltrated systems.
Lutzb··on Samsung TVs May Upload Screenshots for Automatic Content Recognition
As soon as 5G is widely available, TV manufacturers will most definitely include a modem in each set. A GDPR style regulation is needed.
Lutzb··on Brokering Bricks: The World of Lego Investing
Most Lego Technic pieces nowadays are missing the studs, this means construction is way more complex and less organic, explorative.
Lutzb··on Cambridge gallery lends art to students 'with none damaged' in 60 years
Our library in does the same. The Graphotek only charges a small fee of €2.50 per painting. http://www1.stuttgart.de/stadtbibliothek/bvs/actions/profile...
Lutzb··on “Dune” Endures (2013)
Maybe this is a case of false memory, but I am sure I have seen this scene before in a TV cut of the movie.
Lutzb··on Broken
IRC this was only possible on windows 95 and maybe 98.
Lutzb··on Stu Ungar
Can you explain what would be impossible? Ungars call or Matloubis bluff? Novice poker player here, trying to understand.
Lutzb··on Facebook, WhatsApp Will Have to Share Messages With U.K.?
East Germany pre unification.

Edit: upvoted you. Asking the question, if and when this happened is important for further generations.

Lutzb··on Facebook, WhatsApp Will Have to Share Messages With U.K.?
My questions to people who say they have nothing to hide:

- what are the things you and your significant other are doing in the private of your house?

- which co-worker do fantasize about, be specific in what you like to do.

- As teenager what legal/illegal drugs did you consume. How often did you pass out, who where the people you consumed these drugs with?

- What are your political leanings?

- How much do earn, where are your savings invested in.

- Which illnesses do you currently have, which exist in your social circle.

- what private information was shared with you by other parties. Are you aware of any wrong doings/illegal activity by other people? Be specific esp. friends and family.

Be aware that I will share this information with anyone in your social group/work/volunteering work whenever I feel like it. I may also share this data with extremists groups on the other side of the spectrum, if helpful. Lastly I can use this data to fabricate "helpful" information about you if necessary. Thank you.

Lutzb··on ZFS v0.8.2
IBM actually offered $7b, but was outbid by Oracle back then.
Lutzb··on Swiss Copyright Law: Downloading Stays Legal, No Site Blocking
Thank you for the links, I was not aware that the consumer is legally required to pay the "copyright tax" on EU imported storage media falling under this ruling.
Lutzb··on Arctic sea ice reaches second lowest minimum in satellite record
As much as I want to disagree with you, I too have this bleak feeling of inevitable doom. As individuals there is nothing we can do, all the personal changes are dwarfed by the overwhelming magnitude of the problems ahead. In my younger years I would have thought that while the problems seem insurmountable, we as global society will find a solution. The older I get I am convinced that there is almost no political solution that won't be opposed by either big money or irrational nationalism blocking any kind of global solution.

sigh

Lutzb··on French court rules Steam’s ban on reselling used games breaks European law
Yes, thank you for the link.

Relevant quote:

If you offer a special price, promotion or sales conditions, these should be accessible to all your customers irrespective of which EU country they are located in, their nationality, place of residence or business location.

The rules apply to online and offline transactions as long as the sales are to the end user (an individual or business that doesn't have the intention to re-sell, transform, process, rent or subcontract their purchases).

Lutzb··on French court rules Steam’s ban on reselling used games breaks European law
Given this ruling won't be overturned, I find this a very positive outcome for consumers and the market. Also, I hope that there will be an investigation on the tiered pricing model for steam games, i.e. the same game can almost be twice as expensive in different countries in the EU. This coupled without the possibility of the consumer to buy the product in an EU country outside his/her own country goes clearly against the idea/rules of common market. As a European I should be free to order my product from any EU country of my choosing.
Lutzb··on Lectures in Quantitative Economics with Python [pdf]
Yes, I made it a topic as the term was used incorrectly. So I was pointing this out, as not to further this misconception. Is there any additional discussion on this topic needed?
Lutzb··on Lectures in Quantitative Economics with Python [pdf]
There is no conversation here. I was merely taking the opportunity to point out that there is a common misconception regarding the "Nobel prize" and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. Two distinct prizes, one commonly mislabeled. Repeating the misnomer just normalizes the error.
Lutzb··on Lectures in Quantitative Economics with Python [pdf]
He did not win a Nobel prize, as there is no such thing for economics. However he won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.
Lutzb··on Swiss Copyright Law: Downloading Stays Legal, No Site Blocking
Why not just order from e.g. Germany?
Lutzb··on Android 10
I recently found out that Samsung did the same.
Lutzb··on Climate change: Marine heatwaves kill coral instantly
looked into thorium. that's at least 50 years in the future. there are so many engineering challenges involved to ensure failsafe operation (primary, secondary systems)
Lutzb··on The Polar Star, the only U.S. ship capable of bludgeoning through heavy ice
I was visiting the Polar Star when it was in the Hobart Harbour in Tasmania in 2005 or 2006. It was really awesome talking to crew and touring the ship. The twin turbines inside left a lasting impression. We also got invited to the crew reception that evening by the Australian Antarctic Division. I still remember the mountain bike and snowboards on deck of the ship :). Good times.
